The capital felt, by comparison, almost calm. Streets wide enough for two cars. A bakery. A supermarket. We genuinely laughed at how relieved we were.

Tórshavn — pronounced somewhere between “Thorshavn” and “Torshaoun” depending on who you ask — is the capital of the Faroe Islands and home to roughly 22,000 people. That makes it one of the smallest capital cities in Europe. Coming from Rovaniemi, where we live, we’re used to small-city life. But even by Arctic standards, Tórshavn felt intimate.

So: is Tórshavn worth visiting? We spent four days there across two visits, and our honest answer is yes — with calibrated expectations. Here’s why.

Short answer

Tórshavn is absolutely worth visiting. It’s the logistical base for the Faroe Islands, has a genuinely beautiful old quarter (Tinganes), excellent restaurants, and a surprisingly strong café culture — all in a walkable few square kilometres. Don’t come expecting a buzzing European city. Do come expecting somewhere quietly extraordinary.

In this guide

What Tórshavn is actually like

The old town: Tinganes and Áarvegur

What to do — the honest shortlist

Where to eat and drink

Tórshavn as a base for day trips

What we found underwhelming

Mistakes we made

FAQ

What Tórshavn is actually like to walk around

The first thing you notice is the scale. The city centre is genuinely tiny — you can walk from the old harbour to the National Museum in about fifteen minutes without trying. The streets are mostly quiet, the architecture a mix of Scandinavian modernism and traditional Faroese turf-roof buildings, and there’s a kind of calm self-sufficiency to the place that we found immediately appealing.

The vibe

Tórshavn doesn’t perform for tourists in the way that, say, Reykjavik does. There are no walking tours offering free beer at the end, no souvenir shops on every corner selling puffin plushies. The cafés and restaurants exist because locals use them. That’s both the appeal and the mild challenge — it can feel slightly impenetrable on the first day, before you’ve worked out which street has what.

Pedestrian-friendly: The old town and waterfront are all walkable. You don’t need a car in central Tórshavn itself.

Genuinely multilingual: Almost everyone speaks excellent English. We never once felt stuck for communication.

Weather is the variable: On a bright Atlantic day, Tórshavn is one of the most beautiful small cities we’ve seen. In horizontal rain, it’s a different experience. Bring layers regardless of forecast.

Quiet evenings: Unlike Nordic capitals, Tórshavn goes quiet early. By 9 pm most places are winding down. Plan dinners early — especially in shoulder season.

The old town: Tinganes and the streets around it

Tinganes is the reason Tórshavn appears on travel bucket lists, and it delivers. It’s a small peninsula of red and ochre wooden buildings with turf roofs jutting into the harbour — some of these structures date back to the 17th century, and the whole quarter is used as actual government offices, which gives it a working quality that polished heritage sites lack.

How to explore it

You don’t need a guide or a map to enjoy Tinganes. Walk the main street (Neðsti Reyni and Við Bryggju), take the path out to the tip of the headland, and then loop back through the alleyways. Give yourself an unhurried hour. The light does extraordinary things to the red walls in the late afternoon — if you have a camera, that’s your window.

Best time of day: late afternoon for golden-hour colour on the buildings; morning for fewer people.

Áarvegur street: just north of Tinganes, this is the main café-and-gallery strip. Barbara Fish House is here. So is a good coffee shop or two.

The harbour view: walk the waterfront south of Tinganes for the classic photo of the old town from the water. The small marina is also charming in itself.

Weinkeldurín (the Wine Cellar): a 16th-century warehouse tucked into the old town quarter; worth peering into even just for the stonework.

Tinganes on a clear afternoon is one of the most quietly beautiful things we’ve seen in the North Atlantic — and we say that as people who’ve stood on cliff edges in Iceland and Norway.

What to actually do in Tórshavn

Tórshavn isn’t an activity-heavy city. There are no theme parks, no major landmark you queue for. What it offers is better described as a slow collection of good small things.

The honest shortlist

Wander Tinganes — non-negotiable. Do this first, ideally twice.

Viðarlundin Park — the city’s main park, with a small lake and genuinely peaceful walking paths. In summer, locals have picnics here. Excellent for decompressing after rough weather days.

Faroe Islands National Museum (Føroya Fornminnissavn) — better than we expected. Strong permanent collection on Faroese cultural history, including traditional dress, fishing equipment, and Norse-era artefacts. Allow two hours.

Natural History Museum — smaller, more specialist, interesting for anyone curious about the geology and bird life of the islands.

Listasavn Føroya (National Art Gallery) — rotating exhibitions of Faroese contemporary art. Free on certain days. Worth an hour if the current show interests you.

Kirkjubøur day trip from Tórshavn — technically not the city, but only 14 km south: an ancient episcopal settlement with a 13th-century cathedral ruin and a Viking-age farmhouse still inhabited by the same family for centuries. One of the genuinely unmissable things in the Faroes, and accessible without a rental car.

The harbour fish market — small, informal, seasonal. Worth checking if you’re self-catering.

Niels Finsens gøta — the main shopping street. Useful, unpretentious, a few good independent shops alongside the ordinary chain-equivalents.

Letters from Rovaniemi

North Atlantic dispatches, once a month

We write about places most travel blogs skip — the Faroes, Finnish Lapland, slow corners of Norway. The famous restaurants — KOKS (now relocated off-island), Ræst, and Barbara Fish House — represent a New Nordic approach to Faroese ingredients. But you don’t need to spend €150 a head to eat well here.

Practical eating guide

Barbara Fish House — beautiful old house, excellent fish dishes, reasonable prices by Faroese standards. Book ahead, especially in summer. One of our top meals of the whole trip.

Ræst — focuses on traditional fermented and wind-dried Faroese food. Not cheap, but a genuinely unique culinary experience. The lamb is exceptional.

Etika Sushi — yes, there’s sushi in Tórshavn, and it’s surprisingly good given the access to fresh North Atlantic fish. Useful for a different evening.

Café Natur — the social heart of the city for locals. Open from morning, good lunches, great atmosphere for people-watching.

Hot dogs and pastries — there’s a small kiosk near the harbour that does excellent local hot dogs. Cheap, filling, local. We ate there more than once.

Self-catering tip: the SMS supermarket is well-stocked, prices are high but manageable, and the local dairy products — especially skyr and fresh butter — are very good.

One practical note: the Faroe Islands are expensive. Budget around €50–80 per person for a sit-down dinner with a drink. This is broadly in line with Iceland and slightly more than Norway on most items. Lunches are more forgiving.

Using Tórshavn as a base for day trips

This is arguably where Tórshavn earns its keep on a Faroe Islands itinerary. The road network radiates from the capital, and with a rental car you can reach almost any island within 30–90 minutes. On our trip, we used Tórshavn as home base every night and drove out each day.

Day trips we’d recommend from Tórshavn

Kirkjubøur (14 km south) — see above. Half-day, no car needed with the local bus.

Saksun (45 km north) — a remote village in a flooded tidal lagoon with one of the most dramatic landscapes in the islands. Two to three hours including driving.

Vestmanna sea cliffs (50 km northwest) — boat tour season is summer; the cliff faces are some of the most dramatic in the Atlantic.

Gjógv (60 km northeast via tunnel) — a small village built into a natural gorge. The drive is part of the experience.

Mykines via ferry from Sørvágur (90 min drive + ferry) — the puffin island. Requires planning — the ferry has limited capacity and weather cancellations. Book ahead.

Gásadalur waterfall (90 min drive) — the waterfall-into-the-sea image you’ve seen everywhere. Worth it, but expect company in summer.

The sub-sea tunnels connecting the main island of Streymoy (where Tórshavn sits) to Eysturoy, Norðoy, and Vágar mean you can cover enormous ground without a ferry. Some tunnels charge a toll — budget around €15–20 per day if you’re driving actively.

What we found underwhelming — or just different from expectations

We’d rather tell you what didn’t land for us than let you arrive with unrealistic expectations. This isn’t a criticism of Tórshavn — it’s a genuinely wonderful place — but it’s helpful to know what it isn’t.

Nightlife is minimal. There’s a bar strip of sorts near the old harbour, and some places stay open late on weekends. But if you’re expecting a Reykjavik-style scene, you’ll be surprised. It’s not that kind of city.

Shopping is limited. There are a handful of good independent shops (Faroese wool, design, local food), but it’s not a place to come for retail. We bought a Faroese wool sweater and some dried lamb and that was about it.

Not all the architecture is beautiful. Outside Tinganes and the older streets, Tórshavn has its share of 1970s concrete buildings that tell a different aesthetic story. It’s a real, functioning small city — not a postcard in every direction.

The weather can lock you down. We had one full day of Atlantic gale conditions where we genuinely couldn’t do anything outdoors. The city is more resilient to bad weather than the hiking trails — but it can still be limiting.

Mistakes we made in Tórshavn

Not booking Barbara Fish House in advance. We walked in on our first evening and were turned away. We got a table two days later but nearly missed it entirely.

Underestimating the tunnel tolls. We drove through the Eysturoy tunnel four times in two days and hadn’t budgeted for it. Small amounts, but worth knowing.

Bringing the wrong footwear. Tórshavn’s old town streets are uneven cobblestones that become genuinely slippery in rain. We wore trail shoes; we’d recommend the same — not city shoes.

Skipping Kirkjubøur on the first day. We saved it for our last afternoon and almost ran out of time. Do it early in the trip.

Assuming the pace would be like Helsinki or Stockholm. The rhythm here is its own thing — slower, more self-contained. Leaning into that rather than fighting it made the second visit much better than the first.

Forgetting that closing times are real. Shops close by 6 pm on most days. Plan your food shopping before exploring, not after.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Is Tórshavn worth visiting on a short trip to the Faroe Islands?

Yes, absolutely. Even on a 3- or 4-day Faroe Islands trip, we’d spend at least one night in Tórshavn and use it as a base. The old town (Tinganes), the food scene, and the day-trip logistics make it more than just a transit hub. It’s also the most practical place to hire a car and begin exploring.

</details>
<details>

How many days should I spend in Tórshavn specifically?

One to two days is enough to see the city itself — Tinganes, the National Museum, the waterfront, a good meal. But staying three or four nights makes sense if you’re using Tórshavn as your base for day trips across the islands, which is the most efficient way to see the Faroes without moving accommodation constantly.

</details>
<details>

Is Tórshavn expensive compared to other European capitals?

Yes — it’s broadly comparable to Reykjavik or slightly above Oslo in terms of food and drink costs. Budget around €60–90 per person per day for accommodation (mid-range hotel or guesthouse), food, and incidentals. Self-catering from the supermarket brings that down significantly. The city itself has no entry fees and most of the best things to do are free.

</details>
<details>

Do I need a car to enjoy Tórshavn?

Not for Tórshavn itself — everything in the city centre is walkable and the local bus covers Kirkjubøur. But for the rest of the Faroe Islands, a rental car is essentially required. You can hire one in Tórshavn easily. Without a car, your day-trip options are very limited and you’ll feel penned in after a couple of days.

</details>
<details>

What language do people speak in Tórshavn?

Faroese is the official language, but English is spoken fluently by virtually everyone you’ll encounter in restaurants, hotels, shops, and tourist sites. Danish is also commonly spoken as a second language. You will have no communication problems at all as an English speaker.

</details>
<details>

When is the best time to visit Tórshavn?

June to August for the best weather odds, long days (though not quite midnight sun), and green landscapes. May and September are quieter and still beautiful. Winter visits are possible and the city feels cosily self-contained in the dark months, but expect very short days and rougher Atlantic weather. Puffin season on Mykines runs May to mid-August — time accordingly if that’s a priority.

</details>

A final word from Rovaniemi

We’ve lived in small Arctic cities all our adult lives, and there’s a particular quality to places that exist because of their geography rather than despite it — towns that have worked out how to be exactly themselves, without pretending to be somewhere else. Tórshavn has that quality in abundance.

It won’t suit everyone. If you need a city with kinetic energy, a rooftop bar scene, and Instagram walls around every corner, go to Reykjavik instead. But if you want somewhere that offers genuinely excellent food, a beautiful old town, and the most dramatic island road trips in the North Atlantic departing from your front door — Tórshavn is worth your time.

We left wanting more. That’s usually the right sign.

J&A

Your hosts

Joona & Alla

We’re a couple based in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland — Joona heads marketing for a Lapland tourism company, Alla studies AI and creates content.
