The ship had been threading through the fjord for forty minutes, and by the time we walked down the gangway, we were already deciding whether we needed to move on quickly or whether this small east-Iceland town was worth staying for. We stayed two nights. We should have stayed four.

Seyðisfjörður is the Smyril Line’s Icelandic port — it’s where the ferry from the Faroe Islands and Denmark arrives and departs — but it is so much more than a transit stop. Tucked inside a narrow fjord ringed by waterfalls, it holds Iceland’s most intact collection of colourful wooden houses, an arts and music community that punches far above its 700-person population, and trails that climb out of the village into complete wilderness within twenty minutes. This guide is for anyone arriving by ferry, arriving by road, or simply wondering what the fuss is about.

Short answer

Seyðisfjörður is a small town of roughly 700 people on Iceland’s east coast, set inside a deep fjord accessible by a dramatic mountain road (Route 93) or by the Smyril Line ferry from the Faroe Islands and Denmark. It is home to Iceland’s most photogenic collection of rainbow-painted wooden houses, a thriving arts scene, and hiking trails that lead to waterfalls and mountain lakes. That distance alone explains why so few travellers make it here: it’s a serious detour from the Golden Circle and south-coast waterfall loop that fills most Iceland itineraries. But for Ring Road drivers heading east, or for anyone arriving on the Smyril Line ferry, it’s not a detour at all — it’s simply where you are.

The geography that shapes everything

The fjord itself: Seyðisfjörður is about 17 km long and rarely more than 2 km wide. Snow lingers on the peaks well into June.

Route 93: The only road into town crosses the Fjarðarheiði mountain pass, which can close in winter and even in early spring. Driving it in clear weather — especially from the east on the Egilsstaðir side — delivers one of Iceland’s most theatrical arrival sequences: you summit in mist, then the fjord appears below you all at once.

Egilsstaðir: The nearest town (27 km, about 30 minutes) has the region’s airport, a supermarket, and most practical services. Seyðisfjörður deliberately has very few of those — which is part of its character.

The ferry connection: Smyril Line’s Norröna calls at Seyðisfjörður once a week in each direction. You arrive in the early morning, sailing through the fjord as the valley wakes up. Budget roughly 4,000–6,000 ISK for a main course at Við Lónið, 1,000–2,000 ISK for a café lunch at Skaftfell, and 1,500–3,000 ISK per person per night for the hostel dorm (private rooms higher). A campsite pitch runs around 1,500 ISK per person. But both places share something: an insistence on being exactly what they are, without performing for visitors. Seyðisfjörður doesn’t have a tourist office handing out itineraries. It has a swimming pool, a church that plays Brahms on Wednesdays, and a mountain road that closes when the weather says so.

If you’re arriving on the Smyril Line, give yourself more than a morning before hitting the Ring Road.
