From Helsinki, it&#8217;s roughly a 20-hour drive to Hirtshals via Stockholm and the \u00d6resund Bridge \u2014 long but manageable as a two-day journey.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"s7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mistakes_we_made_on_our_own-car_Iceland_crossing\"><\/span>Mistakes we made on our own-car Iceland crossing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>We&#8217;re honest on this blog about what went wrong, because that&#8217;s the part of travel writing that&#8217;s actually useful.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>We booked our cabin grade too low.<\/strong> On the recommendation of a friend, we took the second-cheapest cabin category for the outbound crossing. It was fine \u2014 small but comfortable. On the return, we splurged on a proper outside cabin with a porthole. The North Atlantic in September through a porthole at midnight is one of the most atmospheric things we&#8217;ve experienced. Book the outside cabin. The difference in cost is not as much as you&#8217;d expect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We underestimated how cold the F-roads get, even in summer.<\/strong> We drove the Kj\u00f6lur route in late July. The weather in Reykjav\u00edk had been mild and sunny for four days. On the Kj\u00f6lur at elevation, it was 6\u00b0C and horizontal sleet. Our rain layers were in the car, our warm layers were not. Pack layers in the cab, not just in the boot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We didn&#8217;t check our tyre pressure for gravel driving.<\/strong> Optimal tyre pressure for gravel roads is lower than for tarmac \u2014 reduces the risk of punctures on sharp volcanic rock. We got a slow puncture on day two. Reducing pressure to around 1.8\u20132.0 bar (from our usual 2.3) for gravel sections would have helped. Also: carry a proper spare tyre, not just a space-saver. Space-savers are not rated for Icelandic gravel speeds or distances.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We misjudged how far Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur is from everything.<\/strong> Arriving in Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur after 53 hours of sea travel sounds manageable until you realize you immediately face a 400km drive if you want to reach the south coast or Reykjav\u00edk that day. We should have booked a night in Egilssta\u00f0ir (20 minutes from the ferry port) and started fresh in the morning. Do this. You&#8217;ll be tired. The east of Iceland is beautiful and deserves more than a bleary drive-through.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We didn&#8217;t register with our embassy.<\/strong> For travel to genuinely remote highland areas, registering your itinerary with the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (safetravel.is) is free, fast, and genuinely useful if something goes wrong. We remembered to do it on day four of a three-week trip. Do it on day one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Our GPS kept suggesting F-roads for the regular-road version of routes.<\/strong> Some navigation apps route across F-roads by default because they&#8217;re shorter. Always check any suggested route against the F-road classification before following it, especially in the interior. We now use the Vegager\u00f0in (Icelandic Road Administration) app alongside Google Maps for F-road guidance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"s8\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Frequently_asked_questions\"><\/span>Frequently asked questions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"htf-faq\"><details>\n<summary>Can I take any car to Iceland, or does it need to be a 4WD?<\/summary>\n<p>You can take any car to Iceland and drive the Ring Road (Route 1) and most numbered roads without 4WD. However, if you want to drive any F-road \u2014 highland routes, river crossings, the Kj\u00f6lur or Sprengisandur routes \u2014 you need genuine 4WD with sufficient ground clearance, not just AWD. Driving an F-road in a non-4WD vehicle is illegal, voids insurance, and risks both your safety and serious environmental damage.<\/p>\n<\/details><details>\n<summary>Is the Smyril Line the only way to take your own car to Iceland?<\/summary>\n<p>Yes. The Smyril Line&#8217;s MS Norr\u00f6na, departing from Hirtshals in Denmark, is the only ferry service carrying vehicles to Iceland. There is no other option. If you miss the main booking window, the Smyril Line does maintain a waitlist, but don&#8217;t rely on it for a fixed-date trip.<\/p>\n<\/details><details>\n<summary>Does my Finnish\/Swedish\/Norwegian car insurance cover Iceland?<\/summary>\n<p>Finnish, Swedish, and Norwegian policies typically include Iceland in their standard &#8220;Europe&#8221; coverage, but you should verify this directly with your insurer rather than assuming. F-road coverage is a separate question and is frequently excluded even when Iceland itself is covered. Get the confirmation in writing before you depart.<\/p>\n<\/details><details>\n<summary>Can I stop in the Faroe Islands on the way to Iceland?<\/summary>\n<p>Yes, and we strongly recommend it. The Smyril Line route naturally passes through T\u00f3rshavn. You can disembark in the Faroes, explore for 2\u20135 days by car, and then re-board for Iceland on a subsequent sailing. There&#8217;s a small surcharge for this multi-stop option. The Faroe Islands are extraordinary \u2014 dramatic, almost crowd-free by Icelandic summer standards, and deeply underrated. It turns a single destination trip into a North Atlantic double.<\/p>\n<\/details><details>\n<summary>What happens if my car breaks down in Iceland&#8217;s remote highlands?<\/summary>\n<p>Register your route on safetravel.is before heading into the highlands \u2014 it&#8217;s free and means search and rescue services know where to look if you don&#8217;t check in.
