more than we expected it to. We came in from Germany on a whim &mdash; it was one of those drives where you think you&#39;re just passing through and then find yourself parked on a dune above the North Sea, not wanting to leave. The country is small enough that you can reach the coast from almost anywhere in a few hours, but the coastline itself is long, varied, and genuinely beautiful in a quiet, unshowy way.<\/p>\n\n<p>We&#39;ve since driven several stretches of Danish coast, crossing back and forth between the country on Baltic ferry routes from Finland and Germany. These are the routes we&#39;d do again &mdash; and the honest notes on what they&#39;re actually like to drive.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"htf-tldr\">\n<div class=\"htf-tldr-label\">Short answer<\/div>\n<p>The best coastal drives in Denmark include the <strong>West Jutland dune coast<\/strong> (wild and windswept), the <strong>North Jutland tip near Skagen<\/strong> (where two seas meet), and the <strong>M&oslash;n&#39;s Klint chalk cliffs<\/strong> on the east coast. All three are doable in a day trip or as part of a broader Scandinavia road trip. That&#39;s Norway and Iceland&#39;s territory. But Denmark has something those countries sometimes lack: a coast you can actually drive along at a relaxed pace, with proper roads, easy parking, and a dune-burger stand every twenty kilometres or so.<\/p>\n\n<h3>What makes it different from the rest of Scandinavia<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Danish coast is flat. That sounds like a criticism &mdash; it isn&#39;t. The flatness means the sky is enormous, the light changes visibly in real time, and the transition between sand, heath, and sea feels almost oceanic even though you&#39;re very much in northern Europe. On the west coast, the North Sea rolls in the same way it does in Brittany or the Scottish Outer Hebrides. On the east and south, the Baltic is calmer and warmer, more like a big lake than an open sea.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Roads stay close to the coast<\/strong> &mdash; unlike Norway, where fjord geography often pushes you inland, many Danish coastal roads hug the shoreline for miles at a stretch.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No toll roads to manage<\/strong> &mdash; except the Storeb&aelig;lt and &Oslash;resund bridges, the road network is straightforward and free.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camping is easy<\/strong> &mdash; Denmark has hundreds of official coastal campsites; wild camping is regulated but the official network is so good it rarely matters.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Short distances<\/strong> &mdash; the whole country is roughly the size of the Netherlands. You can cross from coast to coast in two hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"s2\">The West Jutland dune coast &mdash; our favourite stretch<\/h2>\n\n<p>The road running along the western edge of Jutland is as close to elemental as Denmark gets. Between Bl&aring;vand in the south and Hirtshals in the north, the land is mostly sand, grass, and heath &mdash; with the occasional summer house colony appearing out of nowhere and then disappearing again. The sea on this side is the North Sea: cold, grey-green, energetic.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Key stops and what to expect<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bl&aring;vand Lighthouse<\/strong> &mdash; the westernmost point of Denmark. The beach here stretches for kilometres in both directions. Park, walk, stare at the horizon. Germany feels improbably close when the sky is clear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nymindegab<\/strong> &mdash; a tiny village where a river meets the sea through a narrow gap in the dunes. One of those places that feels like it belongs in a different century.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hvide Sande<\/strong> &mdash; the sluice gate town. A channel connects the Ringkj&oslash;bing Fjord (a large enclosed lagoon) to the sea here. Kitesurfers use it; fishermen use it; it&#39;s oddly industrial and beautiful at the same time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nords&oslash;<\/strong> and <strong>Thyb&oslash;r&oslash;n<\/strong> &mdash; where another fjord meets the sea. The ferry crossing here (3 minutes, car-friendly) is one of Denmark&#39;s small pleasures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hanstholm<\/strong> &mdash; WWII bunker fields and a big fishing harbour.
