We were standing in Rovaniemi trying to map a route to the Faroe Islands, and someone said: “Just drive to Denmark and get on the Smyril Line.” That sentence changed how we travel.

A ferry-based Europe trip is exactly what it sounds like — you use passenger and car ferries as the connective tissue of your journey instead of relying on budget airlines or long highway stretches. Europe’s ferry network is genuinely vast: it connects Scandinavia to the Baltics, the UK to Ireland, Germany to Finland, Denmark to Iceland, and Norway to Denmark. With a car or campervan, you unlock a kind of slow travel that flights simply can’t replicate.

Short Answer

Planning a ferry-based Europe trip means choosing a route where passenger ferries replace flights between countries — overnight crossings on the Baltic, North Sea, or North Atlantic do the distance while you sleep. It’s slower and often cheaper than flying when you factor in luggage, transfers, and accommodation, and it lets you bring your own car. The key is booking major crossings (Smyril Line, Viking Line, DFDS) 2–4 months ahead.

In this guide

Why plan a ferry-based trip at all

The main ferry networks in Europe

Six proven ferry-based routes

How to book (and when)

Ferry travel tips and what to pack

Costs: ferry vs flight vs drive

Mistakes we made

FAQ

Why plan a trip around ferries at all

We’ll be honest — there are trips where a cheap flight beats everything. But ferry-based travel wins in ways that matter to us, and increasingly to a lot of travellers who’ve grown tired of airport security queues and 15 kg luggage limits.

The practical case

You bring your car. Across Scandinavia especially, having your own vehicle transforms what’s possible. Drive onto a DFDS ferry in Copenhagen, drive off in Oslo — your road trip continues uninterrupted.

The ferry is also your accommodation. An overnight crossing from Helsinki to Stockholm (17 hours) or from Bergen to Denmark (20+ hours) means you sleep on the boat instead of in a hotel. That changes the economics significantly.

No luggage limits, no security theatre. You walk on with whatever fits in the car.

The journey becomes part of the trip. Standing on the deck watching the Finnish archipelago slide past at dusk is not a layover. It’s one of the best things we’ve done in Scandinavia.

The honest drawbacks

Ferries are slower than flights — sometimes by a full day.

Major routes book out in summer. For a 24-hour Smyril Line crossing, we pack a cooler bag of proper food and only use the ship’s restaurant for one meal.

Pack earplugs and an eye mask. Cabin ventilation systems are loud.

Lock your car and take valuables to the cabin. Standard practice on car-deck ferries.

Check in early. Car decks load in a specific sequence. Being first in the queue means more flexibility about where your car is parked (easier access to the cabin stairwells).

Deck time in good weather is not optional. The best part of long ferry crossings is standing on the open deck. Bring a windproof layer even in July — the North Sea is cold.

Cost comparison: ferry vs flight vs driving

The honest answer is that ferries aren’t always the cheapest option in raw ticket price, but they often win when you factor everything in. Here’s how we run the numbers.

Helsinki–Stockholm overnight ferry (with car + 2-berth cabin, 2 people): €160–280 return, depending on season. Compare to: flights €120–200 return × 2 people + €60 Tallinn bus connection + €150–200 hotel night on each end = the ferry often comes out level or cheaper, with far less friction.

Copenhagen–Oslo DFDS (foot passenger, no car): €40–90 per person, includes overnight accommodation. Hard to beat if you’re not bringing a car.

Smyril Line Hirtshals–Tórshavn (2 people + car): €600–900 each way in peak season. More expensive than flying, but flying to the Faroes requires ferries anyway, and you can’t bring your car by air. For a road trip-focused trip, there’s no alternative.

Scandlines Helsingborg–Helsingør: €10–20 for a foot passenger return. Basically free in European travel terms.

The real savings come when the ferry replaces two things at once: transport and accommodation. Every overnight crossing where you’re in a cabin rather than a hotel bed is essentially a free night’s stay.

Mistakes we made planning our first ferry-based trips

We didn’t book Smyril Line early enough the first year. By the time we looked in April, the July vehicle spots to the Faroe Islands were gone. We had to restructure the whole itinerary. Book this one in January if you can.

We underestimated port-to-city distances. Travemünde is 60 km from Hamburg. Seyðisfjörður is 700 km from Reykjavik. Always check where the ferry actually docks, not just the region name.

We skipped the open deck on the first Baltic crossing. It was cold and we were tired. We regret it every time we think about it. Go outside.

We booked inside cabins for a North Sea crossing. The crossing was rough, and having no horizon made Alla very seasick. Spend the extra €30–50 for an outside cabin with a window on any route where sea state might be an issue.

We forgot to factor in port check-in times. Car ferries typically want you at the port 45–90 minutes before departure for vehicle loading. We arrived 30 minutes before once and nearly missed boarding.

We over-planned the days after long crossings. Arriving at a new country after a night on a boat means you’re tired and the car smells like the ship. Build in a slow half-day after any 15+ hour crossing.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

What is the cheapest way to take a ferry across Europe?

Short Scandinavian hops like Helsingborg–Helsingør (Scandlines) or Helsinki–Tallinn (Tallink) are the cheapest crossings — often under €30 per person as a foot passenger. For longer routes, travelling mid-week outside July and August cuts prices significantly on most major operators including DFDS and Viking Line.

</details>
<details>

Can you take your car on European ferries?

Yes — most major European ferry routes have car decks. You drive onto the ship, lock the car, and walk to your cabin. This is one of the main reasons we recommend ferry-based travel for road trips across Scandinavia and the Baltic states. Book the vehicle slot at the same time as your ticket, since car spaces sell out faster than passenger berths.

</details>
<details>

How far in advance should you book the Smyril Line to the Faroe Islands?

For peak season (June–August), book vehicle spaces by January or February — they sell out. Foot passenger berths last a bit longer, but cabins go quickly too. The Smyril Line website opens bookings roughly 9 months ahead of each departure. Set a calendar reminder for the day bookings open if you’re serious about this route.

</details>
<details>

Is it worth taking an overnight ferry instead of flying?

In most Scandinavian and Baltic contexts, yes — especially if you’re bringing a car. The overnight crossing functions as both transport and accommodation, which changes the economics entirely. Helsinki to Stockholm overnight, for example, typically costs less than flights plus a hotel night in Stockholm, and you arrive with the car and all your luggage already there.

</details>
<details>

Which European ferry routes are best for avoiding seasickness?

The Baltic Sea routes (Helsinki–Stockholm, Helsinki–Tallinn, Stockholm–Tallinn) are the calmest — sheltered waters with minimal swell most of the year. The North Sea (Copenhagen–Oslo, Amsterdam–Newcastle) can be moderate to rough. The North Atlantic on Smyril Line can be very rough in autumn and spring; summer crossings are generally calmer but never guaranteed. Always book an outside cabin with a window on any route where weather might be a factor.

</details>
<details>

Can you plan a full Europe trip using only ferries (no flights)?

Yes, and it’s one of the most satisfying ways to travel. We’ve done Rovaniemi → Helsinki → Stockholm → Copenhagen → Faroe Islands → Iceland, and back, without a single flight. It takes longer but the trip feels genuinely continuous rather than a series of disconnected arrivals. The Smyril Line is the key piece that makes the North Atlantic leg possible by surface.

</details>

A final word from Rovaniemi

We came to ferry-based travel by accident — a routing problem that turned into a travel philosophy. When you replace a 2-hour flight with a 17-hour overnight crossing, you lose very little and gain the kind of travel experience that’s actually worth writing home about.

The ferry network that connects Europe is old, well-run, and massively underused by travellers who assume flying is the only reasonable option. On the Baltic especially, the ships are comfortable, the routes are frequent, and bringing your own car opens up the whole of Scandinavia in a way that no rental queue at an airport ever could.

If this is the year you finally plan that Nordic road trip, plan the ferry first. Everything else follows from there.

— Joona & Alla, Rovaniemi

J&A

Written by

Joona & Alla

Rovaniemi, Finland

A Finnish-Ukrainian couple living in Rovaniemi, Finland.
