Operated by <strong>Viking Line<\/strong> and <strong>Tallink Silja Line<\/strong>, departing from Helsinki&#8217;s South Harbour or from L\u00e4nsiterminaali (West Terminal) every evening, with arrivals in Stockholm (Stadsg\u00e5rdskajen or V\u00e4rtahamnen) the next morning after roughly <strong>16 hours at sea<\/strong>. This is often our preferred route when we want to sleep well and arrive early \u2014 the departure is around 8\u20139 pm and you&#8217;re docking before 8 am.<\/p>\n<h3>Tallinn to Helsinki<\/h3>\n<p>Technically only 2\u20133 hours, so not an &#8220;overnight&#8221; ferry in the classical sense \u2014 but Tallink runs an overnight sailing that departs Tallinn late evening and arrives Helsinki in the early hours. More practical for connecting an Estonia trip to a Finland leg.<\/p>\n<h3>Oslo to Copenhagen (DFDS)<\/h3>\n<p>A beautiful North Sea overnight. DFDS sails between Oslo and Copenhagen (via Frederikshavn in Denmark) on a classic route that passes Oslofjord at dusk. Roughly <strong>17\u201319 hours<\/strong> total. The DFDS Seaways ships are smaller than the Baltic giants but equally charming, and the fjord departure alone is worth it.<\/p>\n<h3>Stockholm to Riga (Tallink)<\/h3>\n<p>An underrated long-haul: roughly <strong>17 hours<\/strong>, departing Stockholm in the afternoon and arriving Riga the following morning. We&#8217;ve done this once as part of a Baltic road trip and were surprised by how relaxed the crossing felt.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"s2\">What to expect on board: the full overnight experience<\/h2>\n<p>First-timers are almost always surprised by the scale of these ships. An overnight Baltic ferry is not a modest crossing \u2014 it is a floating resort, and the experience is closer to a one-night cruise than to a bus ride.<\/p>\n<h4>The boarding process<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Check-in opens 2\u20133 hours before departure.<\/strong> You can board early and explore, grab dinner, or stake out a deck spot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring your passport<\/strong> even for Finland\u2013Sweden (Schengen), because ID checks still happen on some sailings. Always required for Estonia\u2013Finland.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cars and bikes board through a separate vehicle deck.<\/strong> Foot passengers follow signs to the passenger terminal and board via a gangway.
