A weekend Sweden Denmark trip is one of those combinations that sounds almost too easy to be worth writing about. It’s not. The two countries complement each other in ways that genuinely surprised us, and most people visiting the region get it slightly wrong.

This guide covers how to plan a weekend split between southern Sweden and Copenhagen, which direction to travel, what actually takes time, and the things we wish we’d known on our first crossing.

 Short Answer
 A weekend Sweden–Denmark trip works best as a Malmö base + Copenhagen day trip combination, or vice versa. It’s one of the smoothest border crossings in Europe: no passport control in normal circumstances (both countries are in the Schengen Area), no checks, just a train that crosses a bridge and a tunnel under the sea. You barely notice you’ve changed countries.

Getting to the bridge from further north

From Stockholm: direct SJ train to Malmö takes about 4.5 hours. Two currencies, two countries. Denmark uses DKK, Sweden uses SEK. Card payment is universal on both sides — we never needed cash on any of our visits. But ATMs dispense the wrong currency if you’re not paying attention.

2. The Øresundståg is the only train that crosses. Other trains (SJ from Stockholm, DSB from further in Denmark) terminate at Malmö Central or Copenhagen Central respectively. The regional Øresundståg is the cross-border service.

3. Malmö is cheaper than Copenhagen. Typically 15–30% cheaper for accommodation and restaurant meals. If budget matters, sleep in Malmö and day-trip Copenhagen.

4. Copenhagen airport is on the Danish side. Flying in and out of CPH is the most common entry. Note that you can reach Malmö Central directly by train from CPH airport (about 25 minutes, no need to go into Copenhagen first).

5. Neither city is particularly compact. Copenhagen’s best neighbourhoods (Frederiksberg, Østerbro, Nørrebro, Vesterbro) each deserve 2–3 hours. Don’t try to tick all of them in one day.

6. Bikes are genuinely the best way around Copenhagen. Donkey Republic or Bycyklen city bikes are easy to find and the cycling infrastructure is world-class. In Malmö, walking is fine for the central areas.

7. The Skåne region beyond Malmö rewards extra time. Österlen, Söderåsen National Park, and the castle-studded Bjäre peninsula are all within an hour of Malmö and almost entirely overlooked by weekend visitors.

8. The wider Øresund region — including Lund, Helsingborg, Österlen, and the Bjäre peninsula — is almost entirely overlooked by visitors who stop at Copenhagen and consider “done.” The Swedish side is the hidden half of this trip.

 </details>
 <details>

Can you do a day trip from Copenhagen to Malmö?

Absolutely — and many people do it the other way too (day trip from Malmö into Copenhagen). The 35-minute crossing makes a day trip completely feasible. That said, Malmö rewards an overnight stay; the evening food scene around Möllan is the best part of the city.

 </details>
 <details>

What’s the cheapest way to cross the Øresund?

By train, buying a one-way regional Øresundståg ticket. Malmö has had a turbulent reputation in parts of the international press, but the tourist areas, the old town, Lilla Torg, and Möllan are all perfectly safe for visitors. Use the same awareness you’d apply in any city of 350,000 people.
