The Stockholm-to-Malm\u00f6 high-speed route and the Stockholm-to-G\u00f6teborg line are fast and comfortable. The further north you go \u2014 toward \u00d6stersund, \u00c5re, Lule\u00e5, and the Inlandsbanan \u2014 the more rustic and infrequent services become. There is no train to the Lofoten Islands, no rail connection to Troms\u00f8, no tracks into much of northern Norway above Bod\u00f8. The iconic Bergen Railway and the Fl\u00e5m Railway are superb, but if you are planning to explore the fjords by rail alone you will run out of track. Budget \u20ac10\u201315 per person for a light meal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Some routes have no train at all.<\/strong> This sounds obvious but catches visitors constantly: Troms\u00f8, Lofoten, Alta \u2014 none have rail connections. Always check the route before building an itinerary that assumes you can take the train north in Norway.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Border crossings are seamless within Schengen.<\/strong> There are no passport checks crossing Finland-to-Sweden by train or Sweden-to-Norway. But we have also taken sleeper trains in Sweden and Norway, and Nordic overnight travel has qualities that put it well ahead of overnight trains in most of southern Europe.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_expect_in_a_Finnish_sleeper_cabin\"><\/span>What to expect in a Finnish sleeper cabin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Compartment sizes:<\/strong> you can book a single-berth cabin (expensive, excellent), a two-berth cabin (the most popular option for couples), or a three-berth cabin (fine for families or solo travellers happy to share). All come with clean bedding, a small fold-out sink, and a power socket.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Noise levels:<\/strong> quieter than you expect. The Finnish overnight trains have good sound insulation between cabins. We have slept through to Rovaniemi without disturbance on most journeys.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Temperature control:<\/strong> each cabin has its own thermostat. It is worth booking just for the final hour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practical note:<\/strong> book through SJ&#8217;s website. The sleeper compartments are similar in standard to the Finnish option. The cultural ones were more interesting. Nordic train travel has social norms that differ quietly but meaningfully from trains in southern Europe, and understanding them makes the experience considerably better.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nobody talks to strangers on trains unless invited.<\/strong> This is Finland especially, but it applies broadly across the Nordics. Sitting in silence next to someone for four hours is not considered rude \u2014 it is standard. We have grown to find it deeply comfortable. If you want conversation, a smile or a direct question is welcomed; unsolicited chat is not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phones go quiet or go to headphones.<\/strong> The unspoken rule about audio is remarkably consistent. We have never experienced someone playing music through speakers on a Finnish or Swedish intercity train. If you are coming from a country where this is normal, the contrast is striking.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The trains run on time \u2014 but weather exceptions are genuinely dramatic.<\/strong> Finnish trains are cancelled or delayed by heavy snow in a way that southern European railways never encounter. In February, a storm in Lapland can mean the Helsinki\u2013Rovaniemi overnight is hours late. This is rare but real. Check the VR service status page the evening before.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Platform culture is orderly to a degree that feels almost choreographed.<\/strong> Queueing at Finnish and Swedish train platforms is so quiet and structured that our first experience of it \u2014 coming from other European train cultures \u2014 felt slightly unreal. Nobody pushes. Nobody argues. You wait in roughly the right section and board when the doors open.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dogs are welcome on most Nordic trains.<\/strong> We have shared carriages with huskies, golden retrievers, and a very calm Great Dane. Dogs must be leashed and may need a small additional ticket on some routes. One almost cost us significantly more.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Assuming a valid ticket covers the mandatory seat reservation.<\/strong> On the Stockholm\u2013Oslo route, our SJ ticket was valid but did not include the required reservation supplement. The conductor was friendly but firm: we had to pay the on-train reservation fee, which was roughly double the advance booking price. Always check whether a reservation is included or separate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Booking the wrong Helsinki station.<\/strong> Helsinki has one main central station, but trains to Rovaniemi also stop at the Pasila station slightly north of the centre. We once arrived at Pasila expecting a train to have departed from there, when it had in fact departed from the central station ten minutes earlier. Read the departure station on the ticket, not just the time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Not downloading offline maps for train station transfers.<\/strong> Nordic train stations are well-signed in their own language, but when you are transferring in Malm\u00f6, Turku, or Trondheim with a tight connection and your roaming is slow, having offline maps saves significant stress. Google Maps offline works well for this.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Underestimating connection times in Norway.<\/strong> Norwegian trains in the west and north sometimes connect to buses or ferries as part of the Vy integrated network. These connections are timed \u2014 but a delayed train means a missed connection, and the next bus can be two hours later.
