We know what the road looks like. But we’ve also taken the Bergen Railway, hopped local ferries, and pieced together fjord days entirely on foot and public transport. Both are real ways to experience the country.

The question we get most often is whether Norway without a car is actually realistic — or whether the blogs that say “yes, easy!” are just being optimistic. The honest answer is: it depends where you want to go. Here is what we’ve learned from both sides of the windscreen.

Short Answer

Traveling Norway without a car is realistic if you stick to the main tourist corridor (Oslo → Bergen → Flåm → Geiranger by ferry). The train and express-boat network is genuinely excellent. Remote areas like Lofoten, Hardangervidda, or the far north require either a rental car, a guided tour, or serious bus-timetable research. The infrastructure exists. What catches people out is the frequency — especially once you leave the main corridor between Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim. Trains run once or twice a day on many scenic lines, and missing one isn’t a minor inconvenience; it can mean rearranging your whole itinerary.

What works well without a car

Oslo to Bergen by train: the Bergen Railway (Bergensbanen) is one of the great train journeys in the world — 7.5 hours through the Hardangervidda plateau, fjord country, and mountain tunnels. Runs multiple times daily, fully reservable online at vy.no.

Oslo to Trondheim: comfortable, well-connected. Donjordahanen continues north to Bodø — the jumping-off point for Lofoten.

Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana): runs from Myrdal (connection point on the Bergen line) down to Flåm village. One of the world’s steepest railways, and your gateway to Sogne fjord.

Fjord ferries: the Laerdalstunnel – Gudvangen – Flåm ferry route is served by regular passenger boats in summer. Book ahead — high season fills up fast.

Hurtigruten coastal express: technically a boat, not a car-rental, and it connects Bergen to Kirkenes with stops at every major coastal town. Slow, beautiful, and car-free by definition.

City transport: Oslo has an excellent metro, tram, and bus network. Bergen is tiny and walkable. The main villages — Svolvær, Henningsvær, Å, Reine — are connected by the E10 highway, and in summer (late June to mid-August) a limited bus service (Lofoten Ekspressbuss and local Nordland routes) runs between them. Coverage is workable if you plan around it. Outside summer the service thins considerably.

The bus between Svolvær and Leknes runs several times a day and is reliable.

Å village (southern tip, most picturesque) is the last stop on the route — reachable.

Reine and Hamnøy are both on the bus route.

Henningsvær sits on a separate spur road and requires a local taxi or a long walk from the main road.

Most of the famous photography spots (Nusfjord, Unstad beach, Djupfjord) are off-route and extremely hard to reach by public transport.

Our honest take: if you want to see the main villages and hike Reinebringen or Munkebu, you can do it car-free with planning. If you want to chase every viewpoint and photograph at sunrise with full flexibility, rent a car. Same for Flåmsbana. Don’t assume availability.

Use Entur.no as your main planner. Entur is the national journey planner that aggregates trains, buses, and ferries. Better than Google Maps for Norwegian public transport.

Check last-departure times before you commit to a hike. Many trailhead buses have one or two departures a day. If the last bus leaves before sunset and you want the golden-hour view, you need a car or a tour.

Ferries fill up faster than you think. Foot passengers rarely get turned away, but car spots book out weeks ahead in July. As a foot passenger this mostly isn’t your problem — but some routes have limited foot-passenger capacity too.

Allow buffer days. Norwegian weather and Norwegian ferry schedules both have their own agendas. If you’re car-free, a missed connection is harder to recover from.

Night trains are underused. The Oslo–Bodø sleeper is one of the great bargains in Scandinavian travel. Overnight it, wake up in the far north, save a night’s accommodation.

Guided day tours from hubs are genuinely good. Trolltunga, Trollstigen, and the Eagle Road all have guided day tours from nearby cities. They solve the access problem and often include transport you couldn’t otherwise manage.

Combine with cycling where it makes sense. Bringing or renting a bicycle opens up the gaps between bus stops significantly. Several ferry operators take bicycles for free or a small charge.

Car-free vs car: honest comparison

We don’t have a stake in this debate. We’ve done Norway both ways, and the two experiences are legitimately different — neither is wrong.

Car-free wins on: scenic journeys (you actually see the landscape instead of watching the road), sustainability, cost if you plan well, the train and ferry experience itself — which is part of Norway, not just a means to an end.

Car wins on: flexibility, remote access, photography timing, early-morning viewpoints with no other tourists, reaching places that simply don’t have buses.

Car-free is enough for: Oslo–Bergen loop, Sogne fjord, Hardanger fjord with planning, most of Lofoten in summer, Bergen city and day trips, a Hurtigruten cruise.

Car makes a big difference for: Lofoten off-peak, the Trollstigen road, Hardangervidda interior, the far north beyond Bodø, road trip itineraries in general.

Cost reality: a rail pass or point-to-point tickets can be surprisingly affordable if you book early. A rental car in Norway, with fuel, toll roads, and parking, is expensive. Car-free is often the budget-friendlier option on the classic routes.

If we were traveling Norway for the first time on a 10-day trip and didn’t want to rent, we’d do Oslo (2 nights), Bergen Railway to Bergen (2 nights), the Nutshell route through Flåm (1 night), ferry to Ålesund (2 nights), then fly or bus back. That covers the best of the fjords and never needs a car once.

Mistakes we made going car-free in Norway

Assuming the ferry would have space. We turned up at Moskenes on foot without checking — foot passengers were fine, but it was a wake-up call to check Boreal’s booking page in advance for all ferries, not just car spots.

Not downloading offline maps. Village bus stops in Lofoten are not always well-signposted. Google Maps and Entur both work better with a data connection. Download the routes offline before you need them in a fjord valley.

Underestimating bus journey times. Norwegian buses stop at every village. What looks like a 40 km journey can take 90 minutes. We once missed the last ferry of the day by 8 minutes because we trusted Google’s “fastest route” estimate.

Not building in rest days. When you’re car-free, schedule pressure compounds. One weather delay can cascade. Two buffer days saved our trip to Lofoten when a crossing was cancelled.

Assuming summer buses run in spring. Several seasonal routes (including some Lofoten services) don’t start until mid-June or even late June. Check the exact start dates on Nordland Fylkeskommune’s transport pages, not just tourism blogs.

Booking Flåmsbana too late. It filled up in the mornings we wanted. We had to take the afternoon departure and lost the best light. Book Flåmsbana the moment you know your date.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Can you do the Norway in a Nutshell route without a car?

Yes — it’s designed for car-free travel. Book components individually at vy.no and visitflam.com to save money over the bundled product.

</details>
<details>

Is Lofoten accessible without a car?

Partially. You can reach the main villages by ferry from Bodø and get between them by summer bus. Reine, Å, Svolvær, and Henningsvær are all reachable. Remote viewpoints, off-season travel, and photography at flexible hours genuinely benefit from a rental car. If you’re traveling in July and sticking to the main villages, you can manage without.

</details>
<details>

What is Entur and is it useful?

Entur is Norway’s national journey planning app and website (entur.no). It aggregates trains, regional buses, ferries, and local transport into one search. It’s far more accurate for Norwegian public transport than Google Maps, which misses many rural buses entirely. Download it before you go.

</details>
<details>

How much cheaper is car-free Norway compared to renting?

On the classic Oslo–Bergen–Flåm route, car-free is often significantly cheaper. A return Bergen Railway ticket booked early costs around NOK 400–700. Rental cars in Norway run NOK 800–1,500+ per day before fuel and toll roads. If you’re doing a road-heavy itinerary with multiple remote stops, the maths changes — a car shared between two people can be cost-effective — but for the main tourist corridor, public transport wins on cost.

</details>
<details>

Can you see the fjords properly from public transport?

Yes. The Bergen Railway runs through the Hardangervidda plateau and descends into the fjord landscape — sit on the right side of the train heading west for the best views. The Sogne fjord ferry crosses one of Norway’s most dramatic waterways. You arguably see more of the landscape car-free than you do driving, because you’re not watching the road.

</details>
<details>

Do I need to book Norwegian public transport in advance?

For trains (Bergen Railway, Oslo–Bodø sleeper, Flåmsbana) in summer — yes, book weeks ahead. For local buses and most ferries as a foot passenger, you can usually pay on the day. The exception is the Bodø–Moskenes ferry in July, which can fill up — check Boreal’s website and book if available. Always check timetables the day before, as schedules sometimes change.

</details>

A final word from Rovaniemi

We live on the edge of the Arctic, and Norway is practically our backyard. We’ve driven it in winter on packed snow and ferry-hopped it in the midnight sun of July. The honest thing we can tell you is this: Norway without a car is not just possible — on the right routes, it’s the better experience. The Bergen Railway alone is worth a trip from almost anywhere in Europe.

What the car gives you is freedom to deviate — to take the road that looks interesting, to stay for one more sunset, to get to the viewpoint before the tour buses arrive. If those things matter to you, rent one for part of the trip. If you want to sit back and let Norway unfold through a train window, skip it entirely. We’ve done both, and we have no regrets about either.

If you’re building your car-free itinerary, the single most important thing is to check Entur before you book anything else. It’s how Norway actually gets around.

J&A

Your writers

Joona & Alla

A Finnish-Ukrainian couple living in Rovaniemi, Finland.
