He meant no harm. He genuinely did not know. That moment stuck with us, because we have also been that tourist in other countries, doing things we would cringe at now.

Low-impact travel in the Nordics is not about being perfect. It is about paying attention to the places you visit and making slightly better choices each time. From our home at the Arctic Circle, here is what that actually looks like — the principles behind it, the practical habits that help, and the mistakes we have each made and learned from.

Short answer

Low-impact travel in the Nordics means staying on marked trails, following Everyman’s Right without abusing it, leaving no trace in wild camping, choosing train or ferry over flying where possible, and spending money in local economies rather than international chains. The Nordic wilderness is resilient — but not infinitely so.

In this guide

Why the Nordic wilderness is fragile despite looking tough

Everyman’s Right — what it means and what it doesn’t

The low-impact checklist we actually use

Transport choices and their real impact

Spending locally — where your money goes

Wildlife and nature — the rules that matter most

Mistakes we made (and what we changed)

FAQ

Why the Nordic wilderness is fragile despite looking tough

The paradox of the Arctic

Nordic landscapes look almost indestructible — vast boreal forests, mountain plateaus that stretch to the horizon, rivers running with cold clear water. But the ecosystems underneath are extraordinarily slow to recover from disturbance.

In Lapland, the growing season is just eight to ten weeks long. A patch of jäkälä (reindeer lichen) that took fifty years to establish can be destroyed by a single boot crossing it once. Arctic peatlands — the fens and bogs that cover large parts of northern Finland, Sweden, and Norway — store enormous amounts of carbon and are almost impossible to restore once they are damaged by drainage or foot traffic.

The overtourism pressure is real

Nordic summer tourism grew by double digits in 2025 and 2026. Some trails near Rovaniemi, Lofoten, and the Faroe Islands are now seeing more visitors in a month than they used to see in a year.

Reindeer herding — still a living livelihood for Sámi families across Finnish and Norwegian Lapland — is directly disrupted by off-trail hikers, drone flights, and unplanned wild camping near calving grounds.

The clean drinking water that makes the Nordics feel otherworldly comes from peatland filtration. Pollute the peatlands and you damage the water too.

None of this means you should stay home. It means the way you travel matters more here than almost anywhere else in Europe.

Everyman’s Right — what it means and what it doesn’t

Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland all operate under some form of allemannsrätten — the right of every person to access nature, camp temporarily on unfenced land, pick berries and mushrooms, and swim in lakes and rivers. It is one of the most progressive land-access laws in the world, and it is also one of the most misunderstood.

What you can do under Everyman’s Right

Camp for one to two nights in the same spot on unfenced land, further than 150 metres from the nearest house.

Walk, ski, or cycle across most private land as long as you do not damage crops or gardens.

Pick wild berries, mushrooms, and flowers (but not protected species).

Swim and boat on lakes, rivers, and the sea.

Light a campfire where conditions permit (check local fire bans — Lapland fire bans are serious).

What Everyman’s Right does not cover

Camping close to someone’s home or within sight of it.

Driving off-road in Finland (strictly illegal — fines are significant).

Collecting protected species of plants, lichen, or insects.

Disturbing reindeer, nesting birds, or other wildlife.

Cutting living trees for firewood.

Leaving waste of any kind, including food scraps.

Everyman’s Right is a privilege, not a licence. The countries that offer it trust you to use it responsibly — and they can, and do, fine those who don’t.

The low-impact checklist we actually use

Over years of hiking, road-tripping, and camping across Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands, we settled on a list of habits that are specific enough to actually change behaviour — not vague sustainability slogans.

Checklist item 01 — Stay on the marked trail

Even when the path looks like a shortcut is obvious. Braided trails (where people have worn extra parallel tracks around a muddy patch) are one of the clearest signs of erosion in Nordic wilderness. Step in the mud.

Checklist item 02 — Pack out everything, including orange peel

“Biodegradable” doesn’t mean “leave it” in the Arctic. Orange peel takes two years to break down in cold northern conditions. Apple cores attract bears in parts of Norway and Sweden. Take it all with you.

Checklist item 03 — Use a camp stove, not a campfire, when conditions are dry

A campfire in a peat-based soil can smoulder underground for weeks after you leave and ignite later. Finland bans open fires in dry conditions — check the fire warning level before you ever light one. A camp stove is faster and cleaner anyway.

Checklist item 04 — Do not approach reindeer, elk, or nesting birds

Reindeer in Finland are semi-domesticated livestock owned by herding families. Approaching them is disturbing someone’s livelihood. Elk with calves are dangerous. Nesting waders on fell plateaus will abandon their nests if disturbed during the critical window in June and early July.

Checklist item 05 — Bury human waste 200 metres from water

The standard “100 metres from water” rule isn’t enough in Nordic ecosystems where surface water is everywhere and drainage is slow. We use 200 metres as our minimum, with a cat hole at least 15 cm deep, and pack out toilet paper rather than burying it.

Checklist item 06 — Check drone regulations before flying

Finland, Norway, and Sweden all require registration for drones above 250g, prohibit flights over national parks without a permit, and ban drone use near reindeer herding areas in calving season (roughly April to June). We did not always know this on early trips. Now we always check before we take the drone out of the bag.

Checklist item 07 — Book huts and campsites in high season

The wilderness hut system in Finland (Metsähallitus), Sweden (STF), and Norway (DNT) is one of the best in the world. Using it reduces wild camping pressure on the most-visited areas, keeps you safer in remote terrain, and funds the maintenance of the trail network. In summer 2026, popular huts on routes like Karhunkierros fill up weeks ahead.

Checklist item 08 — Swim without sunscreen in natural lakes

Most conventional sunscreens are harmful to aquatic ecosystems. In a clear Finnish lake with no current and minimal water exchange, a single swimmer wearing a chemical sunscreen adds measurable contamination. Use mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) if you need it, or simply cover up.

Transport choices and their real impact

Transport is the single largest part of a traveller’s environmental footprint on any Nordic trip. It is also the area where individual choices make the most concrete difference.

The hierarchy we follow

Train and overnight ferry: the best choices. The Helsinki–Stockholm ferry, Interrail across Scandinavia, or the Finnish rail network to Rovaniemi are all remarkably low-emission options. An overnight ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm emits roughly a quarter of what a direct flight would produce per passenger.

Electric rental car: a reasonable option. In the Nordics, electric vehicle charging infrastructure is genuinely good — better than in most of western Europe. Norway in particular has charging at almost every petrol station. An EV road trip through Scandinavia is now a realistic low-emission choice.

Petrol or diesel rental car: acceptable, but choose wisely. If you need to cover ground in Lapland or rural Norway where public transport is thin, a conventional car is often the only option. Offsetting the emissions is imperfect but not meaningless.

Short-haul flight within Scandinavia: avoid if you can. Helsinki to Tromsø by plane versus train-and-ferry is not always the same journey time, but the emissions difference is large. We take the train where it is possible and accept the extra day of travel as part of the trip.

One practical note on rental cars

If you are renting a car in the Nordics and have a choice, ask specifically for the lowest-emission option in the class you need. Rental companies in Finland and Norway now routinely include CO₂ emissions data in their listings, and the difference between models in the same class can be significant.

Spending locally — where your money goes

Economic impact is part of sustainable travel, even if it is less visible than litter or trail erosion. In Nordic communities, especially in Lapland and rural Norway, tourism money either flows into the local economy or out of it — and the difference matters.

How we try to keep money local

Stay at local guesthouses or farm stays over international hotel chains. Lapland has a network of small family-run cottages and wilderness lodges that employ local people and often source food locally. Book directly, not through OTAs that take a 25% cut.

Buy food at local markets and small shops. Rovaniemi has a weekend market (tori) where you can buy fresh Finnish produce directly from producers. In fishing villages along the Norwegian coast, you can often buy fish directly from the boat.

Use local guides for wilderness experiences. Especially for activities that touch sensitive areas — reindeer safaris, aurora hunting, rafting on wilderness rivers. A local guide knows the calving areas, the fire-risk zones, the wildlife patterns.

Tip in countries where tipping is uncommon. Finland and Norway are low-tipping cultures, but a genuine small tip to a local guide or accommodation host goes further here than in countries where service charges are built in.

Wildlife and nature — the rules that matter most

The Nordic countries are among the best-regulated in the world when it comes to wildlife protection, but regulation only works if visitors know the rules.

The rules we think matter most for summer visitors

Do not feed any wild animals, including the reindeer you will inevitably meet on roadsides in Lapland. Feeding changes their behaviour and creates habituation that is dangerous for both animal and future visitors.

Stay 200 metres from sea bird colonies, especially puffin and eider colonies on the coasts of Iceland, the Faroes, and Norway. Nesting disturbance is one of the leading causes of seabird colony decline.

Do not pick protected plants. In Finland, all orchid species are protected. In Iceland, the fragile moss and arctic plant cover is so slow-growing that a single footstep in the wrong place leaves a mark that lasts decades. Walk only on rock or marked paths in Iceland’s lava fields and mossy highlands.

Swim without making noise near lakes in June and July. Arctic loons (kaakkuri in Finnish) nest on quiet lakeshores across northern Scandinavia. They are extremely sensitive to disturbance during nesting and are a red-listed species in Finland. A loud approach can cause abandonment.

Check for current fire bans before lighting anything. In Finland, the official fire warning is updated daily by the FMI. In Norway, there is a blanket national ban on open fires in forests and uncultivated land from 15 April to 15 September — with exceptions only where there is clearly no fire risk.

Mistakes we made (and what we changed)

We flew within Scandinavia when we didn’t need to. For the first few years of travelling as a couple we treated domestic flights as normal. We have since switched to overnight ferries and trains for journeys up to about 10 hours. It took longer the first time. We now actively prefer it.

We camped too close to water on early trips in Norway. We thought we were being minimalist. We were actually placing our tent on riparian vegetation that takes years to recover, and too close to the source of someone else’s drinking water downstream. We now use 50–70 metres from water as our minimum in the Nordics.

We drove off-marked tracks in Iceland. This one we are genuinely ashamed of. Early on, we followed tracks that turned out to be illegal off-road paths. Iceland has strict penalties for this and the damage to the moss is visible from the road for decades. We now walk, full stop, whenever we leave a vehicle in Iceland’s interior.

We left food waste buried instead of packed out. Bears in parts of Scandinavia are a real reason this matters, but even in Finland where there are no bears in Lapland, buried food waste changes soil chemistry and attracts corvids that then harass ground-nesting birds. Everything comes out now.

We flew a drone in a national park without checking. We assumed the rules were the same as in an ordinary forest. They are not. We were lucky not to be fined. We now read the Metsähallitus guidelines for every national park before we bring the drone.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Is low-impact travel in the Nordics hard to do in practice?

Not really. Most of it comes down to a handful of habits — staying on trails, packing out your waste, not disturbing wildlife, and choosing a train or ferry over a flight when you can. None of these require significant extra effort once they are habits. The biggest shift is mental: treating nature access as a privilege rather than an entitlement.

</details>
<details>

Can I wild camp anywhere in Finland under Everyman’s Right?

Almost anywhere on unfenced land, yes — with a few important exceptions. You cannot camp within 150 metres of someone’s home, in national park areas with specific campsite rules, or in private gardens. You also cannot camp on the same spot for more than one to two nights, and you must leave no trace when you leave. Always check the specific rules for national parks, as these vary.

</details>
<details>

Are campfires allowed in Finland in summer?

It depends on the fire warning level at the time. Finland’s FMI publishes a daily fire warning, and when the warning is at its highest level (forest fire warning or above), open fires are banned across the country. Fires are also prohibited in most national park areas except at designated fire spots. Check the FMI site or the national park service website the day you plan to camp.

</details>
<details>

Is it okay to pick berries and mushrooms in the Nordic countries?

Yes, under Everyman’s Right, picking wild berries (cloudberries, bilberries, lingonberries, strawberries) and edible mushrooms is permitted on unfenced land across Finland, Sweden, and Norway. The exception is cloudberries in parts of northern Norway, where there are local restrictions. Never pick protected plant species — if you are not sure what something is, leave it.

</details>
<details>

How much do transport choices really matter for the environment?

Transport typically accounts for 70–80% of a trip’s total carbon footprint. For a couple flying from central Europe to Lapland and back, the return flights produce more CO₂ than everything else on the trip combined. Switching one short-haul flight to an overnight ferry or train cuts that footprint dramatically. It is the single most impactful individual choice a traveller can make.

</details>
<details>

What is the single most important thing I can do for Nordic nature on my trip?

Stay on marked trails in sensitive areas — fells, peatlands, lava fields, and seabird coastlines. Most of the visible damage to Nordic nature comes from off-trail walking in areas that cannot recover quickly from foot traffic. Everything else on this list matters, but this one has the most direct and visible impact on the landscapes you came to see.

</details>

A final word from Rovaniemi

We are not purists about this. We own a car. We have taken flights we could have avoided. We have made every mistake on the list above at some point in our travels.

But living in Rovaniemi — watching tourism pressure increase on the landscapes we walk, ski, and drive through every day — has changed how we think about these choices. The Arctic in summer is one of the most extraordinary places you will ever visit. The birch forest goes bright green in a matter of days in May. The rivers run so clear you can count the pebbles at four metres depth. The fell plateau in June, with the sun still above the horizon at midnight, is a thing that stays with you for the rest of your life.

Low-impact travel is not about deprivation. It is about making sure the place is still recognisably itself when the next person arrives — and the one after that. That is a standard we think is worth holding ourselves to, and worth encouraging in the people who read us.

If you want the longer version of how we move through the world on the road, read our piece on responsible travel in Nordic nature.
