Not because it is complicated — the core of responsible travel in the Nordic countries is genuinely simple — but because we see it go wrong constantly. People who mean well still drive off-road through reindeer grazing land, leave fire rings in places where the vegetation takes fifty years to recover, and camp 30 metres from someone’s summer cabin because they didn’t know the rules.

We live in Rovaniemi. The specifics differ slightly by country, but the core is the same: you can walk, cycle, camp, swim, and pick berries and mushrooms freely in nature, as long as you do not damage anything or disturb the landowner or wildlife.

What the right includes

Camping in nature for one to two nights — in a forest, on a fell, beside a lake — without asking permission, provided you maintain a respectful distance (typically 150–200 m) from any dwelling.

Walking and cycling through any terrain, including privately owned forests, fields that are not under cultivation, and shorelines.

Swimming in any body of water, including lakes and coastal areas on private land.

Picking berries and mushrooms freely — this is explicit in Finnish and Swedish law and implicitly accepted throughout the region.

Lighting a campfire — in designated fire spots or on mineral soil — when no fire ban is in force.

What it does not include

Driving off-road. It is not a set of rules you learn from a sign at a trailhead — it is the implicit expectation that comes with the access Everyman’s Right provides.

Practical leave no trace in Nordic nature

Pack out everything you pack in. This includes coffee grounds, fruit peels, and biodegradable waste. Decomposition is extremely slow in Arctic and subarctic conditions — an orange peel can take two years to break down in Lapland.

Human waste: in remote areas, bury waste at least 70 m from water sources and 150 m from any trail. Carry a small trowel. In popular areas use facilities.

Do not dig drainage trenches around your tent. This causes lasting erosion damage to sensitive soils. Choose a flat, well-drained spot instead.

Do not break live branches for firewood or tent pegs. Use dead wood only. In Lapland, many trees grow just a few centimetres per year — a broken branch represents decades of growth.

Walk single-file on trails to prevent the trail from widening. In popular areas like Karhunkierros (Oulanka) or Kungsleden, widening is already a serious problem.

Wildflowers and mosses: stay on existing paths in sensitive fell and coastal ecosystems. Arctic moss carpets can take centuries to recover from foot traffic.

The access the Nordic countries give you is extraordinary. The responsibility that comes with it is equally serious — and far more rarely discussed.

Fire rules — the non-negotiable checklist

Fire management is the single area where responsible travel in the Nordic countries carries real legal consequences. Wildfires have increased significantly across the region due to drier summers, and the authorities take fire rule violations seriously — fines are substantial, and criminal liability applies in cases of damage.

Always check the fire warning level before lighting any open fire: Finnish Meteorological Institute (ilmatieteenlaitos.fi) for Finland; MSB (msb.se) for Sweden; Meteorologisk Institutt for Norway.

Norway: open fires near vegetation are categorically banned from April 15 to September 15 under the Friluftsloven. This is a blanket seasonal ban — no exceptions, no local overrides that make it more permissive.

Finland and Sweden: no blanket seasonal ban, but fire warnings are issued rapidly during dry periods. When the warning level is “high” or above, open fires are prohibited everywhere regardless of whether you are in a designated fire spot.

Designated fire spots: stone-ringed fire spots at official campsites and trail rest points are your safest option in all conditions. Use these rather than making new rings.

Never make a new fire ring on mineral soil in popular areas. Existing rings concentrate damage; new ones multiply it.

Extinguish fully: pour water until the ash is cold enough to hold in your hand. Glowing coals under ash are the most common cause of wildfire spread from campsites.

Gas stoves bypass the issue entirely — carry one as a backup or primary cooking method during summer travel, especially in Finland and Sweden where the rules are conditional.

Letters from Rovaniemi

We write about travel from inside the Arctic

No influencer content, no sponsored itineraries. Responsible travel means understanding that your presence has real effects on animals — especially during breeding and nesting seasons.

Reindeer in Lapland (Finland and Swedish/Norwegian Sami areas): reindeer herding is a protected Sami livelihood and has legal priority over recreational land use. Do not approach reindeer, do not let dogs near them, and do not camp between a reindeer herd and its grazing route. Calving season (May–June) is the most sensitive period.

Nesting birds: spring and early summer (April–July) is nesting season across the region. Stay on marked paths in wetlands and fell areas. Disturbing a nesting bird — even unintentionally — can cause nest abandonment. Some species (whooper swans, eagles, certain waders) carry specific legal protection.

Bears and wolves: Finland and Norway have brown bear and wolf populations. Make noise while hiking in known bear areas, never leave food waste near your tent, and store food properly. Bear encounters are rare but not impossible, particularly in eastern Finland near the Russian border.

Elk (moose): calving occurs May–June. Cows with calves are genuinely dangerous if approached. Keep distance and do not attempt to photograph at close range.

Seabirds: puffin and tern colonies (Faroe Islands, Norwegian coast, Iceland) have strict approach distances. In the Faroe Islands, cliffside puffin areas have specific guidelines — follow them. Terns will dive-bomb and draw blood if you approach a nesting area.

Water: what you can drink, swim in, and fish from

Water quality across the Nordic countries is exceptional. This is one of the genuine privileges of travel here — and one that requires careful stewardship to maintain.

Drinking from lakes and streams: in most of Finnish Lapland, northern Norway, and remote Sweden, you can drink directly from clear-running streams and lakes without treatment. The general rule: if the water is visually clear and you are well upstream of any habitation or grazing land, it is probably safe. Carry a filter or treatment tablets in populated or popular areas — human and animal contamination happens.

Do not bathe with soap in lakes or streams. Even biodegradable soap affects aquatic ecosystems. Wash at least 70 m from any water source.

Wild swimming: permitted everywhere under Everyman’s Right. Swimwear is standard at beaches and swimming holes; going without swimwear is generally acceptable at remote lakes but use judgment near trails and habitation.

Fishing: requires a national fishing licence in most Nordic countries for rod-and-line fishing (purchased cheaply online). In Finland, fishing with a hook and line from shore is free for all adults. In Norway, freshwater fishing requires a national permit plus a local permit. Check country-specific rules before you pack a rod.

No microplastics policy: some popular Norwegian and Finnish national parks prohibit synthetic-fibre clothing from being washed in natural water sources. Wash synthetic gear only at designated facilities.

Common mistakes we’ve watched tourists make

We are not here to be preachy. Every single one of us has made mistakes in unfamiliar landscapes — we certainly have. These are the patterns we see most often, listed so you can avoid them rather than repeat them.

Camping too close to cabins. The 150–200 m rule feels like a lot until you realise that in Lapland, that cabin might be someone’s only summer home. The cultural expectation of privacy and quiet here is much stronger than in most of Europe.

Driving off-road “just a little bit.” We see tire tracks through lichen-covered fell areas every summer. Reindeer lichen grows approximately 3–5 mm per year. A single vehicle pass can destroy fifty years of growth in a wheel-width strip.

Assuming summer means no fire risk. Some of the worst wildfire conditions in Finland and Sweden occur in June and early July, not August. Check the warning level every single day, not once at the start of your trip.

Feeding wildlife. Every fed animal is an animal being habituated to human food sources. In bear and wolf areas, this can ultimately result in the animal being put down. Do not feed anything.

Leaving “natural” waste. Toilet paper does not biodegrade quickly in subarctic conditions. Pack it out or burn it only when fire conditions allow. Cairns built for fun rather than navigation disrupt the visual landscape and confuse hikers — leave the rocks where they are.

Underestimating trail damage from large groups. If you are hiking with more than six people, you are operating at the threshold where group impact becomes meaningful. Stay on trail, camp in rotation, and compress your group’s footprint consciously.

What we’ve learned living here year-round

The most important thing we have internalised after years in Lapland is this: the landscape here is not resilient in the way that a rainforest or a temperate woodland is resilient. The Arctic and subarctic environment is extraordinarily alive — and extraordinarily slow to recover from damage.

Slow everything down. The Nordic approach to nature is not about maximising how many places you visit. It is about genuinely being in a place. A weekend at one lake, properly experienced, does less damage and leaves more impression than a whirlwind tour of five.

Ask locals. The most useful knowledge about where to camp, where not to go in nesting season, and how to avoid reindeer herding routes is held by people who live in the area. Tourist information offices in Finnish Lapland are genuinely helpful and not just promotional.

Spend money in the places you visit. Responsible tourism is partly about environmental impact and partly about economic impact. Local guiding businesses, locally owned accommodation, and regional food producers all depend on visitors who choose them over generic chains. In Rovaniemi specifically, the tourism economy is highly seasonal — your spending in summer matters.

Support the trail system. Finland’s national trails are maintained by Metsähallitus with a combination of state funding and donations. Norway’s trail network is partly funded by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT), which you can support with a membership. These organisations are what keeps wild places accessible.

Carry a bag for litter you find on the trail. This is genuinely normal behaviour here. We do it. Many locals do it. If everyone who loved this landscape picked up one piece of litter per day, the cumulative effect would be enormous.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Is it really free to camp anywhere in Finland and Norway?

In practice, yes — with conditions. Both countries’ versions of Everyman’s Right allow free camping on uncultivated natural land for one to two nights without paying or asking permission. You must stay at least 150–200 m from any dwelling, leave no trace, and respect fire bans. The right is legally enshrined, not just a cultural tolerance.

</details>

<details>

Can I drink water directly from Finnish lakes and rivers?

In remote, clear-flowing water sources well away from habitation and grazing land, yes — Finland has some of the cleanest freshwater in the world. In popular areas, near farms, or in slow-moving water, use a filter or purification tablets. We carry a Sawyer Squeeze as standard when wild camping in Finland and have never had a problem.

</details>

<details>

What should I do if I encounter a reindeer herd in Lapland?

Stop, stay quiet, and give the herd space to move in whichever direction they choose. Do not try to walk through the herd and do not allow dogs to approach them. Reindeer herding is a legally protected Sami livelihood and takes legal priority over recreational access. If you are camping near an active herding route, move your camp.

</details>

<details>

Are campfires banned all summer in the Nordics?

Norway has a blanket ban on open fires near vegetation from April 15 to September 15. Finland and Sweden do not have a blanket seasonal ban but issue fire warnings rapidly in dry conditions — when the warning level is “high” or “very high,” open fires are prohibited. Check the current fire warning level every day, not just at the start of your trip.

</details>

<details>

How do I find out about local wildlife restrictions before hiking?

In Finland, Metsähallitus (the national parks authority) publishes up-to-date area-specific restrictions at luontoon.fi. In Norway, equivalent information is at inatur.no and miljodirektoratet.no. For Sami reindeer herding areas specifically, the local reindeer herding district (paliskunta in Finnish) can advise on active herding periods in a given area.

</details>

<details>

Do I need a fishing licence to fish in Nordic lakes and rivers?

It depends on the country and the type of fishing. In Finland, rod-and-line fishing from shore is free for all adults — no licence required. Ice fishing and lure fishing require a national fishing management fee (about €7/year, purchased online). Norway requires both a national freshwater fishing licence and a local licence for most water bodies. Sweden’s rules vary by region. Always check country-specific rules before you fish.

</details>

A final word from Rovaniemi

We believe the Nordic outdoors represents something genuinely rare in the modern world: a landscape that is largely intact, legally accessible to everyone, and maintained by a combination of strong environmental law and deep cultural respect. That combination is not inevitable — it is the product of choices made over generations, and it can be eroded by choices made in the opposite direction.

The responsible travel principles we’ve described here are not burdensome. They mostly come down to paying attention, moving slowly enough to see what is around you, and carrying out what you carry in. In return, you get access to some of the most extraordinary wild places on the planet — a fair trade by any measure.

Go out into it.
