night. The scenery kept changing so fast we barely wanted to sleep. Lupine fields, lava plateaus, glacier rivers, and one night a rainbow directly over our tent. Camping in Iceland is genuinely unlike anywhere else we&#8217;ve been in our 21 countries \u2014 partly because of the landscapes, and partly because the rules are clear, the facilities are decent, and almost every campsite accepts card payment at some tiny hut by the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>This guide shares what we learned: the regulations you actually need to follow, how to book, what gear holds up in the weather, and the mistakes we made so you don&#8217;t have to repeat them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"htf-tldr\">\n<div class=\"htf-tldr-label\">Short answer<\/div>\n<p>Camping in Iceland is legal <strong>only in designated campsites<\/strong> \u2014 wild camping was banned nationwide in 2015. Most campsites are open <strong>June through August<\/strong>, cost roughly <strong>\u20ac10\u201318 per person per night<\/strong>, and require wind-proof gear, rain layers, and a sleeping bag rated to at least <strong>\u22125 \u00b0C<\/strong> even in July. Before that, tourists were pitching tents on sensitive lava fields and fragile moss landscapes, and the damage was real. Iceland&#8217;s vegetation takes decades to recover; the ban was not optional.<\/p>\n<h3>What the law actually says<\/h3>\n<p>The Regulation on Camping (nr. 1200\/2014) requires all camping to take place at <strong>designated, registered campsites<\/strong> unless you have the landowner&#8217;s explicit written permission. The rule applies to tents, campervans, and motorhomes equally. On national parks and protected reserves, permits are strictly enforced.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, enforcement varies. On the Ring Road and in the Highlands, rangers do check. We saw a campervan fined near Landmannalaugar for parking off-site. Don&#8217;t risk it \u2014 the fines are meaningful and the ecosystem genuinely can&#8217;t handle the footfall.<\/p>\n<h3>What about campervan parking?<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in a campervan (which is by far the most popular way to camp Iceland), you still need a registered campsite. Sleeping in a layby or at a petrol station is not legal camping, even if locals turn a blind eye in low season. Use the Camping Card system or book individual sites in advance \u2014 more on that below.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"s2\">How to find and book campsites in Iceland<\/h2>\n<p>The ecosystem for finding Iceland campsites has improved enormously in the last few years. You have three main options:<\/p>\n<h3>The Iceland Camping Card (Tjaldkortet)<\/h3>\n<p>This is the best deal if you&#8217;re camping for more than 10\u201312 nights. A single card covers <strong>28 nights for two adults<\/strong> at over 40 participating campsites across the island, for a flat fee of around \u20ac170\u2013185 depending on the year. Children under 16 are free. For a 2\u20133 week Ring Road trip, it pays for itself easily.<\/p>\n<p>You buy the card online before arrival. Check the list of participating sites carefully \u2014 Landmannalaugar and \u00de\u00f3rsm\u00f6rk are not included, which are two of the most spectacular spots. Budget separately for those.<\/p>\n<h3>Booking individual sites<\/h3>\n<p>For the most popular spots \u2014 \u00de\u00f3rsm\u00f6rk, Landmannalaugar, Skaftafell, M\u00fdvatn \u2014 <strong>pre-booking is essential in July and August<\/strong>. Each site has its own booking system. Check the Icelandic Forest Service (Sk\u00f3gr\u00e6kt) for Highland sites, and the national park website for Vatnaj\u00f6kull \/ Skaftafell. We booked \u00de\u00f3rsm\u00f6rk four weeks out and there were already limited spots left for our dates.<\/p>\n<h3>Staying flexible on the Ring Road<\/h3>\n<p>Outside the Highland hot-spots, most Ring Road campsites in smaller towns \u2014 V\u00edk, H\u00f6fn, Borgarnes, Akureyri \u2014 are walk-up in low season and easy to book last-minute.
