-->

We bought our first rooftop tent on a Tuesday after staring at it on a Finnish outdoor retailer’s site for about six months. By the following weekend we were parked on the edge of a bog in Lapland, cooking eggs on a portable stove and watching reindeer cross the road at dawn. That trip changed how we travel. It didn’t make every trip perfect — there were cold nights, condensation problems, and one very embarrassing campsite setup in front of an audience — but it made every trip ours in a way hotel rooms never quite do.

This is the guide we’d want to have read before that first trip. We’ve now done rooftop tent travel across Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland, clocking up enough nights in the tent to have made basically every mistake once. Here’s what we learned.

Short Answer

Rooftop tent travel is one of the most freeing ways to road-trip: you camp anywhere your car can park, setup takes under five minutes, and you sleep off the ground on a real mattress. The main trade-offs are fuel economy (expect 5–15% worse mpg), wind noise at highway speeds, and a gear-down routine every morning. For Nordic travel especially, a hardshell tent with good insulation and a condensation vent is worth the extra cost.

In this guide

What rooftop tent travel actually is

Choosing your first tent

What you need beyond the tent

The campsite question

Our Nordic-specific tips

Fuel, wear, and practical costs

Mistakes we made

FAQ

What rooftop tent travel actually is — and what it isn’t

A rooftop tent (RTT) mounts on your vehicle’s roof rack and unfolds into a sleeping platform 1.5–2 metres off the ground. Most modern versions have a built-in foam mattress, a weatherproof shell, and can be set up by one person in three to five minutes. You drive to wherever you want to sleep, unfold the tent, and that’s it — you’re done.

What it is

Flexible wild camping — no booking campsites weeks in advance, no committing to a fixed route.

Comfortable ground-level independence — the raised position keeps you away from ground moisture, insects, and uneven terrain.

A lifestyle more than a product — once you start thinking “where can we park tonight?” instead of “what hotel did we book?”, your whole travel rhythm changes.

What it isn’t

Free camping everywhere — you still need permission or right-to-roam laws on your side.

A replacement for proper winter camping gear — an uninsulated softshell tent in Finnish January is miserable.

An option for every car — your roof load rating matters. Most passenger cars can carry a lightweight tent; check your manual before you buy anything.

Choosing your first rooftop tent

The market has exploded in the last few years. When we bought our first tent, there were maybe a dozen options available in Finland. Now there are hundreds of models across every price point. Here’s how we’d narrow it down.

Softshell vs. hardshell

This is the first real decision. Softshell tents fold out like a clamshell on a concertina frame, usually weigh less, and cost significantly less — you can find a decent one for €600–900. Hardshell tents open with gas struts in a single motion, have better aerodynamics on the road, and typically insulate better in cold weather. They start around €1,200–1,500 and go up from there.

For Nordic travel — especially if you’re going year-round — we’d lean hardshell every time. The aerodynamic difference alone saves enough in fuel over a season to narrow the price gap, and the insulation matters enormously when you’re sleeping at −10°C.

Key specs to check

Weight vs. your roof load rating — most RTTs weigh 40–80 kg. Your car’s dynamic roof load (the weight limit while driving) is almost always lower than the static limit. Check both.

Mattress thickness — anything under 50 mm will feel thin by night three. 60–75 mm high-density foam is what you want.

Entry — front, side, or rear — depends on where your rack ends and your camping style. Side-entry is most common and works in most situations.

Window placement and ventilation — condensation is the enemy inside any tent. Good cross-ventilation matters more in Finland than in Spain.

Cold-weather rating — some manufacturers give a comfort temperature rating. Treat it like a sleeping bag rating: the “extreme” number is for survival, not comfort.

What you need beyond the tent — the honest kit list

The tent is just the start. These are the things that made the biggest difference on our trips.

The essentials

A solid roof rack — the tent goes on the rack, not the roof. Cross bars rated to at least the tent’s weight plus some margin. Thule, Yakima, and ARB are the brands we trust.

A sleeping bag rated 10°C below your destination’s overnight low — the floor of the tent loses heat faster than you expect.

A condensation-reducing liner — a thin cotton or silk liner between you and the foam mattress makes a noticeable difference to morning dampness.

An annex or awning — getting dressed inside a tent while stooping is fine for one night, not for a two-week trip. A side awning creates usable space instantly.

A portable fridge, not a cooler — if you’re doing more than weekend trips, a 12V compressor fridge (Dometic, Alpicool) changes the food situation completely.

Levelling blocks — sleeping on a 5° slope ruins sleep. Carry a set of plastic levelling ramps for when the ground isn’t flat.

What we added after our first season

A lithium power station (we use a 500 Wh unit) for charging, lighting, and running the fridge off-grid overnight.

A compact gas burner that clips under the awning — cooking in the rain without one is miserable.

A footwear tray that hangs from the ladder rungs — keeping muddy boots out of the tent is civilisation.

A good camp chair, specifically one that packs flat — the ones that come with a bag and collapse to 80 cm are the ones that actually get used.

Letters from Rovaniemi

Travel honestly, from the Arctic Circle

We send one letter a month — a real update from our road trips, gear we’re testing, and Lapland seasonal notes. This is the question we get asked most often, and it has no single answer.

Scandinavia — the best continent for this

Finland — Jokamiehenoikeus (everyman’s right) allows camping in nature for up to two nights in the same spot without asking permission, as long as you’re not visible from private dwellings and you leave no trace. In practice, this means enormous freedom on forest roads, lake shores, and fell-tops.

Sweden — Allemansrätten is similar and equally broad. Sweden also has a dense network of designated free campsites (rastplats).

Norway — the right-to-roam law is strong, but the terrain is challenging. Most people combine wild camping with the excellent network of NAF and private campsites.

Iceland

Wild camping was largely banned in 2015 outside designated areas. You need to use official campsites, which are numerous and reasonably priced. The Camping Card (Tjaldferðakort) covers most of them for a flat season fee and is excellent value.

The practical rule everywhere

Be invisible, leave nothing, and move before anyone has to ask you to. Even where wild camping is legal, being a good guest keeps the right alive for everyone.

Nordic-specific tips from our own trips

We’ve camped in the rooftop tent in every season in Lapland — including one memorable February stretch at −28°C that taught us everything we needed to know about thermal management. Here’s what’s specific to the North.

Moisture is your main enemy, not cold — condensation inside a tent at −10°C turns into frost by morning. A quality vent that you actually keep open (even slightly) matters more than adding another blanket.

Midnight sun changes everything — between June and August in northern Finland, the sun doesn’t set. Carry a proper blackout blind for the tent windows or you will not sleep. We use clip-on blackout fabric cut to size.

Reindeer and elk are attracted to salty things — in Lapland, never leave food or rubbish accessible from outside the car overnight. Reindeer in particular will investigate anything on ground level.

Snow on the tent roof — if you’re camping in heavy snow, clear accumulated snow from the shell before opening it. We learned this the hard way when 20 cm of overnight snow dumped into the tent in a single avalanche as we opened it.

Winter tyres, not just AWD — a rooftop tent significantly raises your vehicle’s centre of gravity, which affects handling on icy roads. Nordic winter driving with an RTT on the roof requires extra caution, slower cornering speeds, and proper winter tyres (not all-seasons).

The light in September is extraordinary — if we had to pick one month for Nordic RTT travel, it would be early September. The dark nights return, temperatures are manageable, autumn colours are peaking, and the right-to-roam access is at its most rewarding.

Fuel, vehicle wear, and real costs

Let’s be honest about the economics. A rooftop tent is not a cheap way to travel. But it can be cheaper than alternatives — if you’re realistic about the numbers.

Fuel economy hit — expect 8–15% worse fuel consumption with a hardshell tent mounted, more in crosswinds. On a 2,000 km trip in a diesel SUV, that’s roughly an extra €30–60 in fuel. Factor it in.

Roof rack stress — if you’re doing serious mileage, have the rack torque-checked annually. The dynamic load of highway driving plus weight is real engineering stress.

Campsite savings — in Norway especially, official campsite fees are €25–45 per night. A Nordic road trip using wild camping (Finland, Sweden) or camping cards (Iceland) cuts accommodation costs dramatically. Over a two-week trip, you can easily save €300–500 versus budget hotels.

The tent amortises over years — a quality hardshell tent should last 10+ years with basic maintenance. Spread over 20 trips, the cost per trip is low. The initial outlay (tent + rack = often €2,000–3,000 for a quality setup) is the shock, not the running cost.

Maintenance costs — keep the fabric clean, treat zips with wax annually, and store the tent slightly open if possible during long storage to prevent mould. We’ve replaced two zips in four years. That’s it.

Mistakes we made — so you don’t have to

Not checking our roof load rating first. We went to buy the tent and nearly chose one that was 15 kg over our car’s dynamic rating. Read the manual, check both static and dynamic limits, and don’t guess.

Buying a cheap softshell for a winter trip. The tent was fine in August. In November in Lapland it was not fine. The insulation gap between a summer-rated softshell and a proper four-season hardshell is enormous in practice.

Forgetting levelling blocks on trip one. The site looked flat. It was not flat. We slid to one side of the mattress all night. Never again — blocks live in the car permanently now.

Not running the fridge off a separate battery. Running a 12V fridge off your car’s starter battery overnight kills the battery. We learned this on a forest road 40 km from the nearest town. Carry a separate leisure battery or power station.

Setting up in the dark for the first time. Your first tent setup should happen in daylight in your own driveway, not in a forest at 11 pm after a six-hour drive. Practice at home first.

Leaving the ladder down overnight. A reindeer in Lapland climbed three rungs of our ladder investigating a food smell. This is a real thing that happened. Pull the ladder up.

Frequently asked questions

 <details>

What vehicle do I need for rooftop tent travel?

Any vehicle with roof bars rated to carry the tent’s weight — which is typically 40–80 kg. Most SUVs, 4x4s, and many larger hatchbacks and estate cars work fine. Check your car’s dynamic roof load rating (the weight limit while driving), which is usually lower than the static limit. Compact city cars are generally not suitable.

 </details>
 <details>

Can I use a rooftop tent in winter?

Yes, but you need the right tent. A four-season hardshell with adequate insulation, a warm sleeping bag rated well below your destination’s overnight low, and good condensation management (keep a vent cracked open) will keep you comfortable down to −15°C or colder. A summer-rated softshell will not.

 </details>
 <details>

Is rooftop tent travel legal in Finland and Scandinavia?

In Finland and Sweden, everyman’s right (jokamiehenoikeus / allemansrätten) allows you to camp in nature for up to two nights in the same spot without permission, provided you’re not near private dwellings and leave no trace. Norway has similar rights. Iceland requires you to use designated campsites — wild camping is generally prohibited.

 </details>
 <details>

How long does it take to set up and pack down a rooftop tent?

A hardshell tent takes 2–3 minutes to open and 5–8 minutes to fully close (fold bedding, zip in), once you know it. A softshell takes slightly longer for opening because of the pole system. The first few times will take longer — practice at home before your first trip.

 </details>
 <details>

Does a rooftop tent significantly affect fuel economy?

Yes — expect 8–15% worse fuel consumption depending on the tent’s aerodynamics, your speed, and crosswind conditions. Hardshell tents are significantly more aerodynamic than softshell ones. At highway speeds, the difference matters; on slow forest roads, it’s minimal.

 </details>
 <details>

Can two adults and a child sleep in a rooftop tent?

Most standard RTTs (140 cm wide) sleep two adults comfortably. Some larger models go up to 160–180 cm and can fit two adults and a small child at a squeeze. For family travel with children, many people pair the rooftop tent with a ground tent or annex for extra sleeping space.

 </details>

 The view from our tent on a September morning in Lapland — reindeer fog on the lake, coffee on the stove — is not something any hotel has ever given us.

A final word from Rovaniemi

We’re not trying to convince you that a rooftop tent is the only way to travel. It isn’t right for everyone, and it isn’t right for every trip. There are weeks when we’re genuinely glad to check into a hotel, hand our bags to someone else, and eat a meal we didn’t cook on a gas ring under an awning in the rain.

But the trips that have stayed with us longest — the ones we still talk about years later — are almost always the roof-tent ones. The Lofoten islands in August with no plan. The forest road in northern Sweden where we woke up surrounded by snow we hadn’t predicted. The September morning on a bog lake in Lapland where the mist lifted just as the coffee was ready. Those trips happen because you’re not locked into a booking. You follow the light, the weather, the road.

If that sounds like your kind of travel, a rooftop tent is a genuinely good investment. If you have questions about specific models for Nordic conditions or want to know what we’re running now, drop us a message — we check everything.

J&A

Written by

Joona & Alla

A Finnish-Ukrainian couple living in Rovaniemi, Finland.
