The thing that actually frightened us most was weather \u2014 specifically, how fast it changes and how completely it can white-out a landscape that was crystal clear fifteen minutes earlier.<\/p>\n\n      <h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_whiteout_problem\"><\/span>The whiteout problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n      <p>On the Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula, we drove into fog so thick we couldn&#8217;t see the road edge from the driver&#8217;s seat. The road continued; we just couldn&#8217;t see it. This isn&#8217;t unusual in Iceland \u2014 it happens in summer, in good seasons, on roads marked as open.
