Some rental companies equip cars with all-season tyres in spring \u2014 these are fine for most conditions but not ideal on fresh snow.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n<details><summary>Do we need to cross any rivers on a normal Iceland road trip?<\/summary>\n<p>Not if you stick to the Ring Road and paved side roads. Unbridged river crossings are almost exclusively on F-roads and some remote gravel tracks in the Westfjords. If you see an unbridged ford on a numbered road (it does happen in the Westfjords), check depth visually and only cross if the water is clearly shallow and calm.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 id=\"s8-close\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_final_word_from_Rovaniemi\"><\/span>A final word from Rovaniemi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>We live at the top of Finland, drive on snow and ice for six months a year, and we still found Iceland&#8217;s roads a step up in intensity. Not because they&#8217;re technically difficult \u2014 most aren&#8217;t \u2014 but because the consequences of a wrong turn are so remote and so costly.<\/p>\n\n<p>The single best piece of advice we can give: <strong>read your rental contract before you leave the lot, not after<\/strong>. Know exactly which roads are covered. Download offline maps. Check road.is every morning.
