Here is the sequence we used, with rough driving times that assume you are not rushing but also not dawdling.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leg_1_%E2%80%94_Rovaniemi_to_Tromso_or_Narvik_Norway\"><\/span>Leg 1 \u2014 Rovaniemi to Troms\u00f8 (or Narvik), Norway<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>From Rovaniemi, head northwest. The most direct road crosses into Norway near Kilpisj\u00e4rvi and continues to Troms\u00f8. This leg is about <strong>500 km and 6\u20137 hours of actual driving<\/strong>, not counting stops \u2014 though stops are inevitable because the scenery through Finnish and Norwegian Lapland is relentlessly good. You can also divert slightly south to Narvik (used to be the E8\/E10 combo), which puts you on the scenic Ofoten fjord. Either way, plan to sleep in Troms\u00f8 or Narvik. Both have affordable accommodation options and are worth an evening walk.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leg_2_%E2%80%94_Tromso_to_Bergen_or_Oslo_Norway\"><\/span>Leg 2 \u2014 Troms\u00f8 to Bergen (or Oslo), Norway<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the longest driving stretch \u2014 roughly <strong>1,600\u20131,800 km depending on your exact route<\/strong>, with the E6 spine running south through Norway. Most people break it over two to three days. The coastal E39 is spectacular but adds time due to ferry crossings at multiple fjords; the inland E6 is faster. We split this leg at Mo i Rana (good base, close to the Arctic Circle) and then \u00c5lesund or \u00c5ndalsnes before heading to Bergen. Bergen is the logical embarkation point if you plan to take the Smyril Line from Bergen rather than Hirtshals \u2014 more on that below.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leg_3_%E2%80%94_Bergen_or_Hirtshals_to_Torshavn_Faroe_Islands\"><\/span>Leg 3 \u2014 Bergen or Hirtshals to T\u00f3rshavn, Faroe Islands<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is where your car leaves asphalt and boards a ship. The <em>Smyril Line<\/em> operates the <strong>MS Norr\u00f6na<\/strong>, the only car ferry on the North Atlantic route. It runs weekly in summer (roughly May\u2013September), departing from either Hirtshals in northern Denmark or Bergen. The Hirtshals departure is more flexible and cheaper for most travellers; the Bergen leg is included as an add-on. The crossing to T\u00f3rshavn takes approximately <strong>20 hours from Hirtshals<\/strong> or about 12 from Bergen.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leg_4_%E2%80%94_Torshavn_to_Seydisfjordur_Iceland\"><\/span>Leg 4 \u2014 T\u00f3rshavn to Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, Iceland<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After your Faroe Islands stopover (we recommend at least two nights), the Norr\u00f6na continues to Iceland. The final crossing takes about <strong>14\u201316 hours<\/strong> and arrives in Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, a gorgeous fjord village in the East Fjords. From there, the Ring Road is immediately accessible and Iceland&#8217;s circuit begins.<\/p>\n\n<!-- S2 -->\n<h2 id=\"s2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Smyril_Line_ferry_booking_cabins_timing\"><\/span>The Smyril Line ferry: booking, cabins, timing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>The Smyril Line is the backbone of this whole journey. Without it, you cannot drive your car to Iceland \u2014 there is simply no other car ferry. Here is what matters when you book.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_book\"><\/span>When to book<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Book <strong>at least three to four months in advance<\/strong> for summer sailings, especially if you want a cabin. The Norr\u00f6na is the only vessel on this route and fills up fast for June and July. We have heard of people booking in January for July crossings and still not finding their preferred cabin class. Do not leave this until April if you&#8217;re travelling in July.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cabin_categories_and_costs\"><\/span>Cabin categories and costs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Aircraft seat (no cabin):<\/strong> cheapest option. Fine for the short Bergen\u2013T\u00f3rshavn leg, gruelling for the 20-hour Hirtshals crossing. We did it once. We won&#8217;t again.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Porthole cabin (2-bed):<\/strong> our go-to. Natural light, actual sleep. Budget roughly \u20ac150\u2013220 per cabin per crossing depending on the season.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Outside cabin:<\/strong> more light, slightly higher. Worth the upgrade for the Hirtshals\u2192T\u00f3rshavn overnight.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Car\/vehicle deck:<\/strong> add your car to the booking. Budget \u20ac200\u2013350 per vehicle per crossing at summer rates, depending on vehicle length. Measure your car before booking \u2014 they charge by the metre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The onboard restaurant is decent and not outrageously priced by Norwegian standards. The ship has a bar, a cafeteria, and a proper sit-down restaurant. Bring some snacks if you like, but you won&#8217;t go hungry.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Hirtshals_vs_Bergen_route\"><\/span>The Hirtshals vs Bergen route<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re driving from Rovaniemi, you have two practical options. The longer scenic route swings through Bergen (adding a Bergen\u2192T\u00f3rshavn leg to the ticket). The more common approach is to drive down the E6 into Denmark, take the ferry from <strong>Hirtshals in northern Jutland<\/strong> \u2014 a quick drive from the Norwegian border \u2014 and book a direct Hirtshals\u2192T\u00f3rshavn\u2192Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur crossing. This shaves significant driving time and is usually cheaper. Print this out or screenshot it before you leave.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Smyril Line booking confirmed:<\/strong> car dimensions, cabin, full crossing dates \u2014 done at least 3 months in advance.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Car insurance valid in Norway, Faroe Islands, and Iceland:<\/strong> check your policy \u2014 Faroe Islands and Iceland are not automatically included in standard EU green cards. Call your insurer before you go.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Norwegian AutoPASS account (optional but useful):<\/strong> many toll roads and ferry crossings in Norway charge automatically. AutoPASS or a pre-registered card avoids fines.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Faroe Islands tunnel toll payment method:<\/strong> the Faroe Islands have paid subsea tunnels. Register at <em>faroeislands.fo<\/em> or use the app. Cards are accepted but registration avoids queues.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Iceland&#8217;s F-road rules:<\/strong> if you plan to drive highland roads (F-roads) in Iceland, you need a 4WD vehicle with appropriate ground clearance. Rental exclusions do not apply to your own car but assess honestly.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Cash (Norwegian krone and Danish krone):<\/strong> cards work nearly everywhere in Scandinavia, but having some cash is useful at small Norwegian roadside stops.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Full tank before Kilpisj\u00e4rvi:<\/strong> the stretch from Finnish Lapland into Norway thins out in terms of fuel stations. A few things caught us off guard.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Toll roads are everywhere.<\/strong> Norway has an extensive toll system \u2014 cities, tunnels, and bridges all have AutoPASS readers. If your car is not registered, you will get an invoice sent to your home address, but it is simpler and cheaper to register online before entering Norway.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Fjord ferries break up the E39.<\/strong> If you take the coastal route, you&#8217;ll cross several short fjord ferries. These are inexpensive, scenic, and run frequently \u2014 but they add 20\u201340 minutes each, which adds up across a day.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Fuel is expensive.<\/strong> Norway has some of the priciest petrol in Europe. Budget for it. Fill up just before the Norwegian border if coming from Finland \u2014 Finnish prices are noticeably lower.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Speed limits are strictly enforced.<\/strong> Average speed cameras are common. The limits feel low (often 80 km\/h on main roads) but they exist for a reason \u2014 the roads are narrow and moose are real.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Trollstigen and Atlantic Ocean Road are worth the detour.<\/strong> If you have an extra day, the mountain road at Trollstigen and the Atlantic Ocean Road between Kristiansund and Molde are genuinely breathtaking. Neither is on the fastest route south, but both are close enough to justify a loop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<!-- S5 -->\n<h2 id=\"s5\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Faroe_Islands_stopover\"><\/span>The Faroe Islands stopover<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>The Faroe Islands are not just a transit stop \u2014 they&#8217;re one of the most visually striking places we&#8217;ve been. The Norr\u00f6na schedule typically gives you two to three days in the Faroe Islands between the inbound and outbound sailings, and that is enough to see quite a lot.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>T\u00f3rshavn is tiny but walkable:<\/strong> the old town (Tinganes) takes half a morning. Spend the rest of your T\u00f3rshavn time at the harbour market or hiking the ridge above the city.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>The subsea tunnels connect most major islands:<\/strong> you can reach Eysturoy, Streymoy, V\u00e1gar, and Sandoy without a ferry from your car. The famous <em>Eysturoy underwater roundabout<\/em> is genuinely surreal to drive through.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>G\u00e1sadalur and M\u00falafossur waterfall:<\/strong> the waterfall that pours off a cliff into the Atlantic. It is real, it is as dramatic as the photos suggest, and it is about an hour from T\u00f3rshavn.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Lake S\u00f8rv\u00e1gsvatn:<\/strong> the optical-illusion lake that appears to float above the ocean. Worth the walk out, allow 2\u20133 hours including the hike.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Weather changes fast:<\/strong> the Faroe Islands can go from sunshine to horizontal rain in 20 minutes. Pack a waterproof and do not plan tight schedules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div class=\"htf-pull\">The Faroe Islands felt like the world had been given a slightly different set of physics \u2014 the light, the cliffs, the silence.<\/div>\n\n<!-- S6 \u2014 MISTAKES -->\n<h2 id=\"s6\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mistakes_we_made_so_you_dont_have_to\"><\/span>Mistakes we made so you don&#8217;t have to<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Booking too late and losing cabin choice.<\/strong> Our first attempt at this trip we booked the Smyril Line in May for July. The only cabin left was a four-berth inside room shared with strangers. Book early.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Not checking insurance coverage.<\/strong> We assumed our Finnish car insurance covered Iceland. It did not, automatically. We had to call our insurer from T\u00f3rshavn and add a rider. Do this before you leave home.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Underestimating Norway driving times.<\/strong> The E6 on a map looks straightforward. In reality, the speed limits, fjord ferries, tunnel tolls, and sheer volume of stunning pull-off opportunities mean you cover far fewer kilometres per day than you expect. We were two days behind schedule by the time we reached Bergen.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Eating only onboard the ferry.<\/strong> The Norr\u00f6na&#8217;s restaurant is fine, but pricey for three meals over 20 hours. We now bring a small cooler bag with good food from shore.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Skipping the Faroe Islands in a rush.<\/strong> On our first crossing we only had one night in T\u00f3rshavn. It was nowhere near enough. Budget at least two full days \u2014 ideally three.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Not pre-registering the Faroe tunnel tolls.<\/strong> We queued at a manual payment point for 25 minutes in the rain. The app takes five minutes to set up.
