The system is well run, the terminals are easy to navigate, and for the majority of crossings, on most of the year, you can simply drive up and get on.<\/p>\n\n<p>The cases where advance booking genuinely matters are narrow but worth knowing: July and August on the busiest fjord routes, long crossings like Bod\u00f8\u2013Moskenes, and any time you&#8217;re in a large vehicle during peak season. Outside those scenarios, the walk-up system works very well.<\/p>\n\n<p>Our standard approach: look up the operator&#8217;s website for the route and date, check the timetable and the frequency, and make a call based on time of year. That takes about 20 seconds and has saved us from the handful of situations where showing up without a booking would have cost us a couple of hours.
