It&#8217;s roughly 170 km end to end, but calling it a highway is misleading \u2014 in stretches it narrows to something you&#8217;d hesitate to call two-lane, and it crosses six of the major islands via bridges and one of Norway&#8217;s most impressive subsea tunnels.<\/p>\n    <h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_islands_youll_cross\"><\/span>The islands you&#8217;ll cross<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n    <p>The E10 passes through or alongside Austv\u00e5g\u00f8ya, Gims\u00f8ya, Vestv\u00e5g\u00f8ya, Flakstad\u00f8ya, and Moskenes\u00f8ya \u2014 each one distinct in character. Austv\u00e5g\u00f8ya is where most visitors arrive and where Svolv\u00e6r, the commercial hub, sits. Vestv\u00e5g\u00f8ya is flatter, farmland-heavy, and home to Leknes. Flakstad\u00f8ya and Moskenes\u00f8ya get increasingly dramatic and remote as you push south-west, ending at the tiny village of \u00c5, which is both the name of a place and the last letter of the Norwegian alphabet. There are two main ways in.<\/p>\n    <h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_A_Drive_all_the_way_via_the_E10_from_Narvik\"><\/span>Option A: Drive all the way via the E10 from Narvik<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n    <p>From Rovaniemi we took this route \u2014 cross into Norway at Kilpisj\u00e4rvi, continue via Troms\u00f8 and then south to Narvik, then west on the E10 through Gullesfjordbotn and across the Tjeldsundbrua bridge onto Hinn\u00f8ya island, and eventually onto Lofoten proper via Fiskeb\u00f8l. It&#8217;s long \u2014 from Rovaniemi we drove roughly <strong>700 km over two days<\/strong> \u2014 but you get Norway&#8217;s coastal interior as an appetiser, and you arrive in Lofoten from the north-east, which means you&#8217;re driving <em>toward<\/em> the drama, not away from it.<\/p>\n    <h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_B_Ferry_from_Bodo_to_Moskenes\"><\/span>Option B: Ferry from Bod\u00f8 to Moskenes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n    <p>The alternative is to drive south to Bod\u00f8 and take the ferry directly to Moskenes in the south-west, then drive the E10 in reverse (south to north). The ferry crossing takes about 3.5 hours and drops you immediately into the most dramatic part of the islands. If you&#8217;re short on time, this is the smarter approach. Speed limits are mostly 70\u201380 km\/h but feel fast given the curves and scenery. You won&#8217;t want to do 80 anyway.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Side roads<\/strong> to viewpoints, fishing villages, and beaches are often single-track with passing places. Pull over early, not at the last second \u2014 Norwegians are patient but not infinitely so.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>The Nappstraumen bridge<\/strong> between Vestv\u00e5g\u00f8ya and Flakstad\u00f8ya is a highlight in itself \u2014 short, but the current rushing underneath it is among the strongest tidal flows in the world.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>The Lofast tunnel<\/strong> (Raftsundtunnelen, about 3 km subsea) connects Austv\u00e5g\u00f8ya to the mainland road and was what made year-round driving to Lofoten possible. It&#8217;s toll-free and straightforward.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Parking<\/strong> is the real logistical challenge in summer. At Reine, Hamn\u00f8y, and Henningsv\u00e6r you will spend time circling. Arrive early \u2014 before 9 am \u2014 or accept that you&#8217;ll hike in from a distance.<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n    <div class=\"htf-pull\">The road keeps handing you views you weren&#8217;t expecting. Don&#8217;t try to tick all of them in a day \u2014 pick your priorities and do them properly.<\/p>\n    <h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Our_honest_stop-by-stop_breakdown\"><\/span>Our honest stop-by-stop breakdown<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n    <ul>\n      <li><strong>Svolv\u00e6r:<\/strong> the main town and practical base. Good supermarkets (Rema 1000, Coop), a harbour worth a morning walk, and the famous Svolv\u00e6rgeita (Goat peaks) visible from the pier. More functional than beautiful, but that&#8217;s useful.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Henningsv\u00e6r:<\/strong> the most photogenic village on the islands. Built on a tiny cluster of islets connected by short bridges, it&#8217;s famous for the football pitch with the sea on both sides. Come early or late \u2014 midday in July it&#8217;s wall-to-wall tourists.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Stamsund:<\/strong> a quieter fishing village that most people skip. We liked it for exactly that reason. The Lofoten hostel here is one of the most legendary budget stops in Norway.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Leknes:<\/strong> the practical hub of Vestv\u00e5g\u00f8ya. Not scenic, but has a large supermarket and a fuel station that&#8217;s open late. Stock up here before heading south-west.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Flakstad and Ramberg:<\/strong> some of the most unexpectedly white-sand beaches in Norway. The water is arctic blue. Nobody swims, but the walks are extraordinary.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Reine:<\/strong> the postcard village. It is as beautiful as every photo suggests, and as crowded. The Reinebringen hike starts here \u2014 448 m of scrambling for a view that genuinely earns it. Allow 2\u20133 hours return.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>\u00c5 (pronounced &#8220;Oh&#8221;):<\/strong> the end of the road in every sense. A preserved fishing village, a museum about traditional cod-drying, and a feeling that you&#8217;ve arrived somewhere genuinely remote. Lofoten in June under the midnight sun is a completely different place from Lofoten in October under a stormy sky.<\/p>\n    <h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Season-by-season_reality_check\"><\/span>Season-by-season reality check<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n    <ul>\n      <li><strong>June\u2013July (midnight sun):<\/strong> light 24 hours a day, which is as surreal as it sounds. The downside is that this is peak season \u2014 ferries and campsites are booked solid, parking is a battle, and prices are at their highest. But the light at 2 am on a still June night on the Reinefjord is something we&#8217;d go back for unconditionally.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>August:<\/strong> our sweet spot. Still light until very late, warm enough for beach walks, crowds beginning to thin, and wildflowers still on the hillsides. This is when we did most of our Lofoten driving and we&#8217;d choose it again.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>September\u2013October:<\/strong> the autumn light is extraordinary \u2014 low, golden, dramatic. Fewer tourists, better parking, dramatically cheaper accommodation. The weather is genuinely unpredictable though, and some smaller roads and ferries reduce frequency. Worth it if you can tolerate the possibility of rain for three days straight.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>November\u2013March (northern lights season):<\/strong> Lofoten in winter has its own cult following. The dramatic peaks covered in snow, the cod-drying season, the chance of aurora over the fjords. Roads can be icy and some caf\u00e9s and guesthouses close. Here&#8217;s what actually cost us money and what didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n    <h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_honest_cost_breakdown\"><\/span>The honest cost breakdown<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n    <ul>\n      <li><strong>Tolls:<\/strong> the E10 itself has no tolls through the islands. The Bompengeringen (toll ring) around larger Norwegian cities doesn&#8217;t apply here. The main cost is if you take the ferry from Bod\u00f8 \u2014 budget NOK 600\u2013900 for a car and two passengers each way.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Fuel:<\/strong> petrol and diesel prices in Norway are among Europe&#8217;s highest (roughly NOK 20\u201322 per litre in 2026). Fill up in Svolv\u00e6r or Leknes \u2014 prices at small stations further south-west climb.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Accommodation:<\/strong> ranges from free wild camping (Everyman&#8217;s Right applies in Norway) to NOK 1,800+ per night at Reine-area cabins. Rorbu (traditional fishermen&#8217;s cabins) are the iconic Lofoten choice, typically NOK 1,200\u20132,500 per night. Book months ahead for peak summer.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Food:<\/strong> grocery shopping at Rema or Coop is affordable and the quality of fresh fish is outstanding. Lofoten rewards wandering \u2014 the viewpoints you find by pulling over randomly are often better than the official ones.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Not booking accommodation ahead.<\/strong> In August we thought we could sort it day by day. We were wrong. The last guesthouse in Moskenes village that had space charged us accordingly. Book at least the peak nights in advance, especially July\u2013August.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Skipping the side roads.<\/strong> The E10 is the spine, but the side roads to Nusfjord, Vikten, and the western beaches of Vestv\u00e5g\u00f8ya are where the real discoveries happen. We added two of them on the final day and immediately regretted not doing it earlier.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Arriving in Reine at noon.<\/strong> In July, noon at Reine is a car park surrounded by buses. We came back at 8 pm \u2014 still full daylight, a third of the people, twice the magic.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Underestimating the Reinebringen hike.<\/strong> It&#8217;s steep and involves proper scrambling in sections. Hiking shoes are not optional. We saw people attempting it in sandals. Don&#8217;t be those people.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Not bringing enough layers.<\/strong> Even in summer the Lofoten wind coming off the Atlantic is genuinely cold.
