— toll roads, ferries, mountain passes, and distances that look short on a map but take twice as long to drive. We drove into Norway from our home in Rovaniemi more times than we can count, and every time we learned something new about how to actually plan it. This guide is the result of all of that.

Whether you have seven days or fourteen, the framework is the same. Decisions stack on top of each other — where you enter, which direction you drive, whether you prioritise fjords or Arctic coast or both — and if you make them in the right order, the rest falls into place surprisingly easily.

Short answer

A 7-day Norway road trip is enough for one region done well — either the western fjords (Bergen to Ålesund) or the Lofoten Islands. 14 days lets you combine both, or go deeper into the Arctic north. The biggest planning mistake is underestimating driving times: Norwegian roads are scenic but slow, and 200 km routinely takes four hours. Plan for that, and the trip runs beautifully.

In this guide

How to choose your route: 7 vs 14 days

The best Norway road trip routes explained

What to book before you leave

Driving realities: roads, tolls, and ferries

Where to stay along the way

Budget: what a Norway road trip actually costs

Mistakes we made (and how to avoid them)

Frequently asked questions

How to choose your route: 7 vs 14 days

The first decision is not where to go — it’s how much time you have. Norway is a long country. Oslo to Nordkapp is roughly 2,100 km, and the roads are rarely straight. Get this wrong and you’ll spend your trip in the driver’s seat instead of at the viewpoints.

The 7-day road trip

Seven days is a real Norway road trip, not a teaser. The key is picking one coherent region and committing to it. You don’t have time to do both the western fjords and Lofoten — and if you try, you’ll spend two of your seven days in transit and shortchange both.

Best for the fjords: Fly into Bergen, drive north through the Hardangerfjord, Flåm, Aurlandsfjord, Sognefjord, and Geirangerfjord, ending in Ålesund or Trondheim. Return by train or domestic flight — the Flåm Railway alone is worth a half day.

Best for Lofoten: Fly into Bodø, take the ferry to Moskenes, drive the E10 through the islands end-to-end, and fly home from Svolvær. Pure Lofoten, no rush, time for fishing villages and sea-stack hikes.

Best from Finland: If you’re starting from our direction — northern Finland or the Finnish-Norwegian border — drive through Tromsø, drop down to Senja Island, and loop back. Underrated and far less crowded than either of the above.

The 14-day road trip

Fourteen days is where Norway really opens up. The classic move is to combine the western fjords with Lofoten, either by driving the full coastal route north or by mixing driving with a ferry or a train segment to save time.

Classic north-south loop: Oslo → fjords → Bergen → Ålesund → Trondheim → Bodø → Lofoten → fly home from Svolvær. Roughly 2,000 km of driving. Ambitious but very doable if you’re comfortable behind the wheel.

Pure north from Finland: Rovaniemi → Tromsø → Senja → Lofoten → back through the Saltfjellet mountains → Trondheim → fly home. Slower pace, wilder landscapes, fewer tour groups.

The extended fjord deep-dive: Bergen → all the major fjords → Jostedal glacier → Ålesund → Molde → Kristiansund → Atlantic Ocean Road → Trondheim. No Lofoten, but you go much deeper into each fjord region.

The best Norway road trip routes explained

Norway’s 18 official Scenic Routes are marked on maps and GPS, and they exist because someone decided these roads are too good to drive at highway speed. Most of them are single-lane or one-and-a-half lane roads with passing places, and all of them take longer than the direct route. That is entirely the point.

Western fjords: the benchmark

The Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, Nærøyfjord, and Geirangerfjord are the four that most people mean when they say “Norwegian fjords.” All four are real — not overrated — but they’re also the busiest.

Nærøyfjord (UNESCO) is best seen by kayak or boat from Gudvangen. The road above it on Route 13 is excellent driving.

Geirangerfjord sees the most cruise ships. Drive in on the Ørnesvingen eagle road at dawn if you want the famous viewpoint without 400 people in the frame.

Hardangerfjord is quieter and deeply underrated — orchards, waterfalls, the Vøringsfossen falls, and almost no crowds even in July.

Sognefjord is Norway’s longest and deepest. You don’t need to drive all of it; the Aurlandsfjord arm near Flåm is the accessible highlight.

Lofoten: the road trip that rewires you

The E10 from Å in the south to Fiskebøl in the north is 170 km. Most people drive it in four hours and call it done. We spent four days on it and still wanted more. The islands reward slowness — stop at every fishing village, eat fresh cod or rorbuer klippfisk, and watch the light change over the sea stacks.

The Arctic north: Tromsø, Senja, and beyond

Most road-trip guides stop at Lofoten. North of there, the crowds thin dramatically and the landscapes get wilder. Senja Island (one ferry from the mainland) is sometimes called “Norway in miniature” — fjords, beaches, fishing villages, and one of the best mountain hikes in the country, all on one island the size of a city. Tromsø is the obvious hub: a real city with great restaurants, useful as a base for two or three nights.

What to book before you leave

Norway doesn’t require as much advance booking as you might expect — but a few things genuinely do sell out, and being caught without them causes real pain.

Book ahead 01 — Car rental

Book early, especially for summer. Rental stock in Bergen, Bodø, and Tromsø gets tight in June and July. A standard automatic is fine for all main roads; you only need AWD or 4WD if you plan to drive mountain passes or gravel roads early or late in the season.

Book ahead 02 — Bodø–Moskenes ferry (for Lofoten)

This is the one ferry you must book in advance. It runs several times daily in summer but fills weeks ahead for car passages. Book via Torghatten Nord’s website as soon as your dates are fixed. Foot passengers can usually walk on, but car spaces sell out.

Book ahead 03 — Accommodation in Lofoten

Rorbu (traditional fisherman’s cabin) accommodation in Lofoten is limited and books out months ahead in peak season. Prioritise this above almost everything else if Lofoten is on the route. Henningsvær and Reine fill first.

Book ahead 04 — The Flåm Railway

If the western fjords route passes through Flåm — and it usually should — the Flåm Railway is a 20 km scenic train that descends through waterfalls and mountain scenery. Seats book out in peak summer; do it online beforehand.

Book ahead 05 — Trolltunga hike permits

Trolltunga requires a registered guide or a safety briefing slot in peak season. The hike itself is 22–27 km return and takes 10–12 hours. Don’t turn up and assume you can just start walking in July — check the current requirements on the Hardanger Fjord website before you go.

Book ahead 06 — AutoPASS setup

Norway’s toll roads bill you electronically. Your rental car should come with a toll chip — confirm this when you collect the car. If you’re driving your own vehicle, register it at autopass.no before you go. You don’t need to do anything at toll points; it’s fully automatic.

Letters from Rovaniemi

Travel writing from above the Arctic Circle

Honest guides, quiet places, and what it’s actually like to live in Lapland. Norway’s road network is extraordinary, but it’s built around geography that refuses to be hurried. Mountain passes close in winter. Ferries run on schedules. Tunnels appear where you expect bridges and bridges where you expect straight road.

Speed limits are low and enforced: 80 km/h on rural roads, 70 km/h on many mountain roads, lower through villages. Average driving speed in Norway is genuinely around 60–70 km/h in practice. Use Google Maps or Waze set to Norway — their time estimates are accurate in ways that raw distance never is.

Toll roads are everywhere: Oslo’s ring toll, the bridge to Lofoten, urban bypasses, tunnels — it adds up. Budget €15–30 per day for tolls if you’re driving actively. Your rental company will add a toll processing fee on top; read the small print.

Ferries are part of the route: Most ferries are short (10–45 minutes) and run frequently. You simply drive on, pay at the terminal or via AutoPASS, and drive off. Bodø–Moskenes (Lofoten) is the exception — it’s 3.5 hours each way and requires advance booking as noted above.

Mountain passes may be closed: Passes like Sognefjellsvegen and Trollstigen are closed in winter and open in May or June. Check current status on vegvesen.no if you’re travelling early or late in the season.

Single-lane roads require patience: Most of the most beautiful roads in Norway are single-lane with passing places. The rule is simple: whoever reaches the passing place first reverses. Campervan drivers tend to know this; rental car tourists sometimes don’t. Be patient, reverse when needed, and don’t be in a hurry.

Where to stay along the way

Norway accommodation runs from wild camping on the fjord shore (fully legal under Allemansretten, Norway’s right to roam) to design hotels in Bergen and everything between. Here’s how we approach it:

Wild camping is legal and beautiful: You can pitch a tent anywhere in nature that’s more than 150 metres from the nearest house, as long as you stay no more than two nights in the same spot. This is genuinely how a lot of Norwegians do road trips. It’s free, and the spots are extraordinary — fjord shores, lakesides, mountain plateaus.

Hytte (cabins) are the sweet spot: Norwegian cabins through platforms like Finn.no or Airbnb are almost always better value than hotels for two people travelling together. Many have a kitchen, which is important in Norway where eating out is expensive.

Rorbu in Lofoten: These red fishing cabins built over the water are not just accommodation — they’re the Lofoten experience. They’re expensive by camping standards but cheap by hotel standards for what you get. Book far ahead as noted.

Campsites are well-equipped: Norwegian campsites (camping.no) typically have clean facilities, electrical hookups, and a kitchen. They’re not glamorous but they’re reliable and cheap relative to hotels.

Bergen and Tromsø are the nights you probably want a hotel: Both cities have walkable centres worth exploring in the evening. A decent mid-range hotel in Bergen runs €120–180 per night; Tromsø is similar in summer.

Budget: what a Norway road trip actually costs

Norway is expensive. There’s no version of this that isn’t true. But the gap between a Norwegian trip and, say, a Spanish one is smaller than people think if you approach it the right way, because Norway gives you a huge amount for free — wild camping, hiking, and most of the views cost nothing at all.

Car rental: €50–100 per day depending on size and season. Compact automatics are fine; SUVs are only needed for highland routes.

Fuel: Norwegian petrol is expensive — around €2 per litre. Budget €40–70 per day if you’re driving actively through fjord country where detours add up fast.

Tolls: €15–30 per day on a typical fjords or Lofoten route.

Accommodation: €0 for wild camping; €80–150 for a hytte for two; €30–50 for a campsite. Budget €60–100 per night as a planning number for mixed accommodation.

Food: Supermarkets (Rema 1000, Kiwi, Coop Extra) are reasonably priced. Restaurants are not. A dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is €80–120. Our approach: supermarket breakfasts and lunches, one restaurant dinner every two or three nights.

Ferries and activities: The Bodø–Lofoten ferry with a car costs around €60–80 one way. The Flåm Railway is around €35 per person. Budget €200–300 for misc ferries and paid attractions over two weeks.

Total 7-day budget (two people, mixed accommodation, one or two restaurant dinners): approximately €1,400–1,900 all-in excluding flights.

Total 14-day budget: approximately €2,500–3,400 all-in excluding flights.

Mistakes we made (and how to avoid them)

Underestimating driving times. On our first Norway trip we planned 300 km days. That’s four to five hours of driving on Norwegian roads, often more. After that we capped daily driving at 150–200 km. Your experience improved dramatically the moment we did.

Not booking the Lofoten ferry early enough. We arrived in Bodø once to find the next available car space on the Moskenes ferry was two days away. We ended up taking a domestic flight and leaving the car behind for a day. Book the ferry first, build the rest of the trip around it.

Skipping Senja for Lofoten. We rushed past Senja Island to get to Lofoten and then kept thinking about how the light had looked on Senja as we drove away. Go back if you have the days.

Eating in tourist restaurants at Geirangerfjord. Geirangerfjord is spectacular and the restaurants at the fjord floor charge spectacularly for the view. Pack a picnic. The scenery is identical from a pull-out 400 metres up the road.

Not checking pass opening dates. Trollstigen and Sognefjellsvegen open in late May most years, but late snow can push that back. We planned a route that depended on Trollstigen being open and it wasn’t. Have a backup valley route ready.

Missing the fjords at sunrise. The light on a Norwegian fjord at 5 am in June is something that’s hard to describe. The problem is that sunrise is at 4 am in summer and most people sleep through it. Set one alarm. Worth it every time.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Is 7 days enough for a Norway road trip?

Yes, if you choose one region and commit to it. Seven days in the western fjords (Bergen base) or seven days in Lofoten both give you a genuinely full experience. Seven days trying to do both leaves you feeling rushed. Pick one, go deep, and you’ll leave wanting to come back for the other — which is not a bad outcome.

</details><details>

What is the best time of year for a Norway road trip?

June to August for the best weather, the midnight sun, and all passes and roads open. Late May and September are excellent shoulder seasons with fewer tourists and lower prices — some mountain passes are still closed in late May, so check. July and early August are the busiest; if you hate crowds, mid-June or late August is the sweet spot.

</details><details>

Do I need a 4WD or special car for Norway?

No, for a summer road trip on the main routes. A standard compact car handles everything on the E6, E10, and all the major fjord roads. You only need 4WD or AWD if you’re driving highland tracks (marked F-roads) or if you’re travelling in shoulder season when some passes may still have snow and ice.

</details><details>

How much does a Norway road trip cost per day?

Budget roughly €150–200 per person per day for a comfortable Norway road trip with a mix of cabin and camping accommodation, supermarket meals with occasional restaurant dinners, and active driving. Wild camping drops this significantly. Staying in hotels and eating out every night pushes it to €250–300 per person per day.

</details><details>

Do I need to book accommodation in advance for a Norway road trip?

For Lofoten rorbu — yes, months in advance for July. For everything else, a week or two ahead is usually fine in June and September. Wild camping requires no booking at all and is legal almost everywhere. If you’re going in peak July, book all accommodation before you leave home.

</details><details>

Can I drive from Finland into Norway?

Absolutely — this is how we do almost every Norway trip. The border crossings are open, unstaffed, and easy. From Rovaniemi you can reach Tromsø in around four hours, or enter Norway via Kilpisjärvi, Karigasniemi, or Utsjoki depending on which part of Norway you’re heading for. No customs stop, no paperwork — just a road sign changing from Finnish to Norwegian.

</details>

J&A

Written by

Joona & Alla

A Finnish-Ukrainian couple living in Rovaniemi, Finland.
