Fill up in Inari, every time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Underestimating ferry times.<\/strong> On a coastal Norwegian route, we missed a ferry by three minutes and had to wait 45 minutes for the next one. Download timetables in advance \u2014 the <em>Sanntid<\/em> app covers most Norwegian ferries \u2014 and plan to arrive 10\u201315 minutes before departure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Booking accommodation in Karasjok instead of Alta.<\/strong> Karasjok is tiny, and the accommodation options are limited. Alta is an hour further west on the E6 but has far better options for food and services. If you are doing more than one night in Finnmark, use Alta as your base.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Driving the Norwegian mountain passes in bad weather without checking conditions first.<\/strong> The Norwegian road administration (vegvegvesen.no) publishes real-time pass conditions. Some mountain passes in Finnmark and Troms close seasonally or during storms. Check before you commit to a route.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expecting Finnish road widths on Norwegian mountain roads.<\/strong> The E75 and E6 are wide and comfortable. Secondary Norwegian roads are often one lane with passing places.
