Unlike in most countries where access to private land is a privilege granted at the landowner&#8217;s discretion, in Sweden it is a constitutional right. It covers not just camping but walking, cycling, swimming, berry-picking, and skiing across private land, as long as you behave responsibly.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_legal_basis\"><\/span>The legal basis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>Allemansr\u00e4tten is enshrined in the Swedish Environmental Code (<em>Milj\u00f6balken<\/em>) and referenced in the Swedish Constitution. Allemansr\u00e4tten is a right that comes with responsibilities \u2014 <em>inte st\u00f6ra, inte f\u00f6rst\u00f6ra<\/em> (don&#8217;t disturb, don&#8217;t destroy) is the shorthand Swedes use. It does not give you the right to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n  <li>Camp in the garden, yard, or immediate vicinity of someone&#8217;s home.<\/li>\n  <li>Drive a car or motorcycle across private land.<\/li>\n  <li>Leave rubbish or damage the environment.<\/li>\n  <li>Light fires during dry-weather fire bans (check Sweden&#8217;s official alert system before every trip).<\/li>\n  <li>Pick protected plants, disturb nesting birds, or trap animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"s2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_rules_you_need_to_know_before_you_pitch_your_tent\"><\/span>The rules you need to know before you pitch your tent<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>When we first wild camped in Sweden, we made a few unnecessary mistakes \u2014 not illegal ones, but things that would have made landowners or other visitors uncomfortable. These are the rules that actually matter in practice.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Distance_from_houses\"><\/span>Distance from houses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>There&#8217;s no single legally mandated distance, but the widely accepted guideline \u2014 and the one the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (<em>Naturv\u00e5rdsverket<\/em>) promotes \u2014 is to camp <strong>at least 70 metres from the nearest residence<\/strong>. If you can clearly see a house from your tent, you&#8217;re too close. This distance is about respecting people&#8217;s &#8220;private zone&#8221; (<em>hemfridszonen<\/em>), and Swedish landowners are generally very relaxed about camping as long as this is respected.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_one-to-two_night_rule\"><\/span>The one-to-two night rule<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>You can stay in one spot for one or two nights without permission. If you want to stay longer \u2014 say, using a spot as a base camp for several days \u2014 you should ask the landowner. In practice, for remote forest or mountain camping in Lapland or J\u00e4mtland, there may not be a landowner anywhere near you, and a longer stay causes no issues. In more populated areas closer to Stockholm or the west coast, stick to the two-night limit.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fire_rules\"><\/span>Fire rules<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>Fire rules are the most variable part. Sweden operates a national fire risk alert system. During dry summer periods \u2014 which 2026&#8217;s forecasts suggest could be significant across central Sweden \u2014 open fires may be banned across entire counties. Always check the county board (<em>l\u00e4nsstyrelsen<\/em>) website before you go. We take this seriously. Here&#8217;s what we do on every wild camping trip in Sweden \u2014 and Scandinavia generally.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Camp on durable surfaces.<\/strong> Bare rock, gravel beaches, and established clearings are far better than meadow grass or sensitive heathland. The more delicate the ground cover, the more damage a tent does \u2014 even over one night.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Use a stove, not a fire, as your default.<\/strong> A gas stove leaves no trace. An open fire, even done right, leaves a scar. Save fires for special evenings with good conditions, not every night.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Carry out everything you carry in.<\/strong> Sweden&#8217;s forests are remarkably clean compared to many countries we&#8217;ve camped in. Keep them that way. We bring a small mesh bag for collecting any rubbish we find near our camp, not just our own.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Bury human waste properly.<\/strong> Dig a cat hole at least 15 cm deep, at least 70 m from any water source or trail. Carry a small trowel \u2014 it&#8217;s worth the 50 grams.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Arrive late, leave early in popular areas.<\/strong> If you&#8217;re near a popular lake or hiking route in high summer, minimise your footprint by pitching after 7 pm and moving on before 9 am. Less chance of conflict, better experience.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Check fire risk before every trip.<\/strong> Even if yesterday&#8217;s forecast was fine. Conditions can change in 24 hours during Swedish summers.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Tell someone your route.<\/strong> Sweden&#8217;s remote north \u2014 Lapland, J\u00e4mtland \u2014 is genuinely remote. A simple note to a friend with your planned route and return date is cheap insurance.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Respect wildlife nesting seasons.<\/strong> Mid-April to mid-July is the most sensitive period for ground-nesting birds across Sweden. You&#8217;re genuinely spoilt for choice. But from our trips and the camping we&#8217;ve done across the Nordic countries, these are the regions we&#8217;d prioritise.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Swedish_Lapland_%E2%80%94_the_most_remote_option\"><\/span>Swedish Lapland \u2014 the most remote option<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>Everything above the Arctic Circle in Sweden \u2014 Abisko, Sarek, Padjelanta, the Kungsleden trail \u2014 is world-class wild camping territory. The terrain is genuinely wild, the population density is among the lowest in Europe, and the midnight sun in June and July means you have more light than you can reasonably use. We&#8217;ve found that Swedish Lapland feels slightly more accessible than Norwegian Finnmark \u2014 the trails are better marked, the huts are well-maintained, and the towns are slightly more tourist-ready as bases.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Abisko National Park:<\/strong> stunning canyon, easy train access from Kiruna, the Kungsleden starts here. Some camping zones are restricted \u2014 check the rules at the park office.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Sarek National Park:<\/strong> no marked trails, no facilities, no mobile signal in most of it. This is for experienced wilderness campers only. One of the most beautiful places we&#8217;ve ever stood.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Kebnekaise valley:<\/strong> Sweden&#8217;s highest mountain, a mountain station with services, and wild camping on the approach routes. Good for multi-day expeditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jamtland_%E2%80%94_Swedens_outdoor_heartland\"><\/span>J\u00e4mtland \u2014 Sweden&#8217;s outdoor heartland<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>J\u00e4mtland, in west-central Sweden, is where a lot of Swedes go to camp. The J\u00e4mtlandsfj\u00e4llen mountains, Storsj\u00f6n lake, and the Sylarna massif offer multi-day routes with both wilderness camping and a network of STF (Swedish Tourist Association) mountain huts. We did a section here in late August and it was one of our favourite camping experiences in any country \u2014 the light, the relative solitude, and the quality of the terrain were all exceptional.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dalarna_%E2%80%94_accessible_nature_culture_included\"><\/span>Dalarna \u2014 accessible nature, culture included<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>Dalarna is more approachable than Lapland and J\u00e4mtland, easier to reach from Stockholm by train, and full of classic Swedish scenery \u2014 red wooden cottages by birch-fringed lakes, hiking trails through pine forest, and small towns with excellent bakeries for a post-camping morning. Siljan lake and the hills around S\u00e4len are popular but rarely crowded by western European standards.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bohuslan_coast_%E2%80%94_sea_camping\"><\/span>Bohusl\u00e4n coast \u2014 sea camping<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>The Bohusl\u00e4n archipelago on Sweden&#8217;s west coast, north of Gothenburg, offers a completely different experience: island hopping, sea kayaking, and camping on granite skerries. The right to anchor and camp extends to the sea, and the archipelago has thousands of small islands, most of them uninhabited. The high summer crowds peak at Sm\u00f6gen and Grebbestad but disperse quickly once you&#8217;re out on the water.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Skane_%E2%80%94_the_south_for_softer_starts\"><\/span>Sk\u00e5ne \u2014 the south, for softer starts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re new to wild camping or travelling with children, Sk\u00e5ne (Sweden&#8217;s southernmost region) is gentler \u2014 flatter, warmer, with more marked trails and shorter distances between towns.
