Here is how they sort by what you actually come for.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_history_and_medieval_atmosphere\"><\/span>For history and medieval atmosphere<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Visby (Gotland):<\/strong> The best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia, full stop. The ring wall is intact, the streets are cobblestone, and the rose gardens grow inside the ruins of 12th-century churches. Getting there requires a ferry from the mainland &mdash; about three hours from Nyn&auml;shamn &mdash; but Visby alone is worth a detour on any Sweden trip. Go in summer when the restaurants open into the alleyways. That person was wrong. We turned around after seeing the harbour from the road and spent two of the better nights of the trip there. Add it to your route &mdash; it is directly on the E20 between Gothenburg and Stockholm.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Booking Visby as a day trip.<\/strong> Three hours each way on the ferry plus traffic leaving Nyn&auml;shamn left us about four hours in Visby. That is enough to walk the wall and feel annoyed. Visby needs at least one full day on the island, preferably two. We went back the following summer and stayed three nights.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Assuming Lule&aring; was just a logistics stop.<\/strong> We planned to sleep there and leave early for the Norwegian border. We ended up staying an extra day after discovering the Gammelstad church village and booking a boat trip into the archipelago. Block out two nights for Lule&aring; if you are doing the northern route.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Not researching Falun properly.<\/strong> We drove to Falun expecting a quick mine visit and left five hours later. The mine tour runs for 90 minutes underground. The museum above is a full afternoon. The town itself is worth a walk. Set aside at least a half-day, ideally a full day.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Ignoring Sundsvall&rsquo;s architecture.<\/strong> We stopped only for fuel on our first pass. The stone city centre &mdash; all late 19th-century neo-renaissance buildings on a grid &mdash; is one of the most distinctive streetscapes in Sweden. They are places where the country is more itself.<\/p>\n\n<p>The best day we have had in Sweden was not in Stockholm. It was eating smoked whitefish on a dock in Mariestad while a thunderstorm built over Lake V&auml;nern and then cleared before sunset. The worst day we have had in Sweden involved a parking garage in central Gothenburg and a restaurant queue that moved nowhere for forty minutes.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you are road-tripping Sweden, leave room for the small cities.
