Walk the Tammerkoski rapids, eat a Tampere-style black sausage from the market hall, and drive the 30 minutes south to spend the night by the water. The fines scale with income (yes, really \u2014 millionaires have received \u20ac100,000+ speeding fines). Most standard rental cars handle them fine in summer, but don&#8217;t take a low-clearance vehicle if you&#8217;re planning to venture off Route 9.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Fuel stations thin out.<\/strong> Fill up when you&#8217;re in a town. The stretches between Savonlinna and smaller villages can be longer than your mental map suggests.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>Ferry crossings.<\/strong> Several lake crossings use cable ferries operated by the state \u2014 they are free, frequent, and feel like a tiny event each time. But if you drive this route without spending at least two nights in a lakeside cottage \u2014 <em>m\u00f6kki<\/em>, in Finnish \u2014 you&#8217;ve missed the point entirely.<\/p>\n\n    <h3>Booking a m\u00f6kki (cottage)<\/h3>\n    <p>The Finnish concept of the summer cottage is not equivalent to an Airbnb. It&#8217;s usually a simple wooden cabin by the water, with a private sauna (almost always wood-burning), a rowing boat or canoe, and a dock. The cultural expectation is that you do very little: sauna, swim, sauna again, eat, sleep.<\/p>\n    <ul>\n      <li><strong>Lomarengas<\/strong> is the main Finnish cottage rental platform. The <em>Lossiranta Lodge<\/em> is directly on the lake and gets good reviews from repeat visitors. In Kuopio, staying in or near the market square puts you within walking distance of J\u00e4tk\u00e4nk\u00e4mpp\u00e4 sauna and the morning market.<\/p>\n\n    <!-- S7 -->\n    <h2 id=\"s7\">What we got wrong \u2014 mistakes from our own trips<\/h2>\n    <ul>\n      <li><strong>We underestimated how long the ferry waits would take.<\/strong> The Puumala ferry runs every 20\u201340 minutes, but we turned up expecting it to be instant. Add 30\u201360 minutes to any ferry-crossing day.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>We skipped Punkaharju the first time.<\/strong> It looked small on the map and we were in a hurry. That was wrong. Reserve online as soon as your dates are confirmed.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>We brought too much food.<\/strong> Finnish supermarkets (K-Market, S-Market, Prisma) are good and open late. You don&#8217;t need to load the car with supplies for a week. Buy locally \u2014 the smoked fish at lake-district markets is excellent.<\/li>\n      <li><strong>We drove too much on Day 3.<\/strong> The urge to &#8220;see everything&#8221; is the enemy of actually enjoying a Finnish summer. The best moment of our last trip was sitting on a dock at 9 pm, doing absolutely nothing, while the sky turned pink.
