They’re all within a reasonable drive from the city centre, none require a guide, and most cost nothing but petrol and a willingness to leave the main road.

Short answer

The best hidden nature spots around Rovaniemi include Vikaköngäs rapids, Sinettäjärvi lake, Ounasvaara’s back trails, the Kemijoki riverbanks at Vikajärvi, and the old Pekkala road through old-growth forest. All are within 40 km of the city centre, free to visit, and almost entirely off the tourist map.

In this guide

Why Rovaniemi’s nature is underexplored

Our favourite hidden spots (with directions)

Quick-reference: all spots at a glance

Tips for visiting in summer vs winter

What to bring and how to behave

Mistakes we’ve made so you don’t have to

FAQ

A final word from the Arctic Circle

Why Rovaniemi’s nature is so underexplored

Rovaniemi draws visitors from 80 countries. Almost all of them spend their nature time on three experiences: a snowmobile safari, a reindeer farm, and a husky ride. Those are fine. But they’re packaged versions of Lapland, designed for people with limited time and no local knowledge.

What they miss is the other 99 percent of the landscape — the boreal forest that stretches hundreds of kilometres without interruption, the river system of the Kemijoki and its tributaries, the small national forest areas and old logging roads that locals use for berry picking, fishing, and weekend walks.

The geography that makes this possible

Rovaniemi sits at the confluence of two rivers — the Kemijoki and the Ounasjoki — on the edge of the Arctic Circle. The city is surrounded by state-owned forest managed by Metsähallitus (Finland’s national forest administration), which means huge areas are legally open for public use under jokamiehen oikeus — Everyman’s Right. You can walk, camp, pick berries, and fish without asking anyone’s permission.

That legal openness, combined with the fact that most tourists never leave the main roads, means genuinely solitary nature experiences are easy to find if you know where to look.

When to go

May–June: snow is melting, ground can be boggy, but the light is extraordinary and birdlife is at its loudest. Bring rubber boots.

July: midnight sun, warm evenings, swimming in lakes is genuinely pleasant. The peak season for wild nature.

August: blueberries, cloudberries, and the first hints of ruska (autumn colour). Our favourite month for forest walks.

September–October: ruska proper, golden and red forest, cool air, fewer mosquitoes. Stunning.

November–April: snow transforms everything. Many spots require skis or snowshoes to access properly, but the silence is absolute.

Our favourite hidden spots — with directions

These are the places we’ve returned to repeatedly over the years. None appear in standard Rovaniemi tourist guides. All are easily drivable from the city centre.

Vikaköngäs rapids

About 25 km north of the city centre on Road 4, turn left at the Vikaköngäs sign. A short forest track leads to a series of rapids on the Ounasjoki river. In summer the water is low and clear, perfect for sitting on the rocks. In spring snowmelt the rapids roar. There’s a basic lean-to shelter on the bank. We’ve spent entire Sunday afternoons here without seeing another person. In winter the river freezes and the ice formations around the rapids are genuinely spectacular.

Sinettäjärvi lake

Drive 20 km west of Rovaniemi toward Sinettä. The lake is large by Finnish standards, with a long south-facing shore and almost no development. There are a couple of informal boat launches used by local anglers. In summer the water temperature gets genuinely warm (18–22°C on good years), and you can swim from flat rocks along the eastern shore. In winter the lake freezes deeply and locals drive snowmobiles across it. No entrance fee, no facilities — that’s the point.

Ounasvaara back trails

Most visitors know Ounasvaara as the ski hill 5 km east of the centre. What they don’t find are the back-side trails that drop into the boreal forest behind the summit. From the top of the ski hill, follow the unmarked forest road northeast. Within 10 minutes you’re in old-growth pine forest with no sounds except birds and wind. The paths loop back, but bringing a GPS or offline map is sensible. In summer these trails are excellent for trail running; in winter they’re groomed for cross-country skiing but quiet enough to feel wild.

Kemijoki riverbank at Vikajärvi

Drive 30 km east on Road 78 (direction Kemijärvi). Pull off at any of the unsigned tracks that lead toward the river south of Vikajärvi village. The Kemijoki is Finland’s longest river, and at this point it’s wide, slow, and deeply peaceful. Sandbanks appear in summer that are perfect for camping. The opposite bank is forested and uninhabited. We’ve camped here in July under the midnight sun with a fire on the sand and seen nothing but the river, the trees, and the light.

Old Pekkala road

This old logging road runs south of the city through a section of forest that feels genuinely untouched. Access from the Saarenkylä area: look for the unsigned forest road heading south, past the old Pekkala settlement. The road is passable by regular car in summer and becomes a snowmobile trail in winter. Ancient pines dominate the canopy. In August this is one of the best blueberry areas we know — and because it’s away from the main berry-picking routes, the bushes are reliably full.

Quick-reference: all spots at a glance

Vikaköngäs Rapids

Distance: 25 km north · Drive: 25 min · Best for: river scenery, picnics, spring melt · Facilities: lean-to shelter only · Suitable: year-round, snowshoes needed Dec–Mar

Sinettäjärvi Lake

Distance: 20 km west · Drive: 20 min · Best for: swimming, fishing, winter lake walks · Facilities: none · Suitable: summer swimming Jul–Aug, winter ice Dec–Mar

Ounasvaara Back Trails

Distance: 5 km east · Drive: 10 min, then walk · Best for: forest walks, trail running, cross-country skiing · Facilities: ski-hill facilities nearby · Suitable: year-round, marked ski trails in winter

Kemijoki Riverbank at Vikajärvi

Distance: 30 km east · Drive: 30 min · Best for: wild camping, midnight sun, fishing · Facilities: none · Suitable: summer; river may flood in May

Old Pekkala Road

Distance: 8 km south · Drive: 15 min · Best for: blueberry picking, quiet forest walks, photography · Facilities: none · Suitable: June–October for berries; winter snowmobile trail

Bonus: Raudanjoki confluence

Distance: 18 km southwest · Drive: 20 min · Best for: birdwatching, quiet fishing · Facilities: none · Suitable: May–September; migrating birds in May are exceptional

Bonus: Tennilammit ponds

Distance: 12 km north · Drive: 15 min · Best for: ruska photography, small trout fishing, morning mist · Facilities: none · Suitable: August–October for peak colour

Bonus: Olkkajärvi viewpoint

Distance: 35 km east · Drive: 35 min · Best for: panoramic view over forest and lake, sunrise photography · Facilities: none · Suitable: year-round; best June–September

Letters from Rovaniemi

The Lapland angles nobody else writes

Monthly dispatches from the Arctic Circle — seasonal guides, hidden spots, and honest takes on life above 66°N.

Subscribe

Tips for visiting in summer vs winter

Rovaniemi’s nature changes completely between seasons. Here’s what matters for each.

Summer (June–August)

Mosquitoes are real. They peak in late June and early July. A head net and long sleeves are not optional in boggy forest areas. DEET spray works; Finnish “Mugga” spray works better.

The midnight sun changes everything. You can be at a lake at 2 am in full daylight. Plan for this — it’s one of the most disorienting and beautiful things about Lapland summers.

Ground can be soft. Especially in May and early June, forest floors are saturated. Rubber boots or waterproof trail shoes are the right call. Trainers are the wrong call.

Berry picking is legal and encouraged. Blueberries, cloudberries, lingonberries — all legal to pick on state land. Cloudberries (lakka) are particularly prized and worth searching for in boggy areas.

Winter (November–March)

Darkness changes access. Between December and January you may have only 3–4 hours of actual daylight. Plan spot visits for midday. Bring a headlamp regardless.

Snow makes some spots inaccessible by car. Forest roads are not ploughed. A 4WD with winter tyres gets you further, but even then some access tracks need snowshoes.

Cold is serious. When we say −25°C is a normal January night, we mean it. Layer properly and tell someone where you’re going if you’re venturing into forest alone.

Frozen lakes and rivers offer new access. Once ice is confirmed safe (check local reports), you can walk across Sinettäjärvi or snowshoe over the Kemijoki sandbanks that are unreachable in summer. Magical.

What to bring and how to behave in Finnish nature

Finnish Everyman’s Right (jokamiehenoikeus) is generous: you can walk, camp, pick berries and mushrooms, swim, and fish in most places without permission. But it comes with responsibilities that Finns take seriously.

Leave no trace. Take every piece of litter back with you. This isn’t a suggestion — it’s deeply ingrained in Finnish culture and a genuine source of local pride.

Fire rules: open fires are permitted in designated fire pits or where there is clear no-fire risk. In dry summer conditions, forest fire warnings are issued and open fires become illegal. Always check before lighting.

Respect private land. State forest is fair game; private gardens, fields, and enclosed areas are not. If a track is blocked with a gate, it’s private. Turn around.

Don’t disturb nesting birds. May and June are nesting season. Give ground-nesting birds wide berth — they’re legally protected.

Essential kit for any spot visit: water, snacks, offline map (Maps.me or OsmAnd with Finland loaded), first aid kit basics, insect repellent (summer), warm layer (any season), headlamp (autumn/winter).

Mistakes we’ve made (so you don’t have to)

Going out in summer without a head net. The mosquitoes near still water in late June are genuinely aggressive. A net is €5 and changes everything.

Trusting Google Maps for forest roads. Several of the roads we use don’t exist on Google Maps, or Google maps them incorrectly. Download a Finland topo layer on OsmAnd or use the national Retkikartta.fi maps (free).

Wearing cotton in autumn. Temperatures in late September can swing 15°C between noon and midnight. Cotton stays wet; merino and synthetics don’t. This matters.

Lighting a fire in a dry summer without checking the fire warning status. We haven’t started a forest fire — thankfully — but we’ve nearly lit fires in conditions where it was prohibited. Always check the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s fire warnings (ilmatieteenlaitos.fi) before you light anything.

Underestimating how long forest walking takes. Soft ground, navigation stops, and just stopping to look add up. We always estimate 30% more time than the distance suggests.

Not telling anyone where we were going. Finnish boreal forest is genuinely disorienting without landmarks. Early on, we went off-trail and spent more time than expected finding our way out. Now we always pin our destination and send it to someone before going in.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Are these spots safe to visit without a guide?

Yes, all of the spots we list are accessible and safe for independent visitors. The key is to bring a reliable offline map (Retkikartta.fi or OsmAnd), tell someone where you’re going, and carry appropriate gear for the season. None require special skills or equipment beyond what any prepared hiker would carry.

</details><details>

Can I camp overnight at these locations?

Yes, under Finnish Everyman’s Right you can camp for one or two nights in almost any natural area that isn’t explicitly private or a protected core zone. The Kemijoki riverbank sandbanks are particularly good for this. Bring your own everything — there are no facilities at any of these spots.

</details><details>

Is it possible to reach these spots without a car?

Ounasvaara back trails are reachable by bicycle from the city centre (about 8 km). The others really need a car or scooter — distances of 20–35 km on roads with no public transport. Car rental in Rovaniemi is straightforward and reasonably priced; this is how most independent visitors get around Lapland anyway.

</details><details>

When is the best time of year for hidden nature near Rovaniemi?

Late July through September is the sweet spot: no extreme cold, bearable mosquitoes after August, gorgeous light, and berry picking in full swing. August in particular — warm days, long evenings, blueberries everywhere — is what we’d choose if we could only visit once.

</details><details>

Are there bears or wolves near Rovaniemi I should know about?

Brown bears exist in Finnish Lapland, but encounters near Rovaniemi are extremely rare. Bears avoid people. The advice is the same as anywhere with large wildlife: make noise while walking, don’t leave food out if camping, and give any animal you see space. Wolves are even rarer near the city. We’ve walked thousands of kilometres of Lapland forest and never had a concerning wildlife encounter.

</details><details>

Can I pick berries at all these spots?

Yes. Finnish Everyman’s Right allows berry and mushroom picking on all state-owned forest land. Blueberries (mustikka) are everywhere in late July and August. Cloudberries (lakka) appear in boggy areas and are more elusive — the Old Pekkala Road area has good patches. Lingonberries (puolukka) come in September. Bring a small container and a lot of patience.

</details>

A final word from the Arctic Circle

One of the strangest things about living in Rovaniemi is watching thousands of people arrive each year to experience Lapland — and most of them leave having seen a version of it that was designed to be experienced, rather than the version that simply exists.

The places in this guide aren’t secret in any complicated way. They’re just slightly off the main road, or slightly further from the car park, or slightly less obvious on a map. That small distance is enough to keep them quiet.

We hope you find your way to at least one of them. Sit by the water, watch the light change (it changes slowly and completely in Lapland summer), and let the place do its thing. That’s the hidden nature of Rovaniemi — not hidden at all, just unhurried.

— Joona & Alla, from the Arctic Circle

J&A

Written by

Joona & Alla

A Finnish-Ukrainian couple living in Rovaniemi, Finland.
