The roads are well-maintained, the rules are sensible, and the scenery is extraordinary. Getting it wrong isn&#8217;t just dangerous \u2014 it can invalidate your rental insurance.<\/p>\n<h3>The legal requirement<\/h3>\n<p>Winter tyres are <strong>mandatory from December 1 through February 28<\/strong> (or whenever wintry road conditions exist, which in Lapland means October through April). All four tyres must be winter-rated \u2014 mixing types is illegal and dangerous on ice.<\/p>\n<h4>Studded vs. non-studded (friction) tyres<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Studded tyres:<\/strong> legal from November 1 through the last day of February (extendable if conditions persist). Significantly better grip on ice. The vast majority of Finns use them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Friction (Nordic) tyres:<\/strong> legal year-round as winter tyres, softer compound, excellent in snow, but noticeably less grip on bare ice at low temperatures.
