No traffic. You\u2019ll understand.\u201d She was right. The <strong>Sognefjellet mountain road<\/strong> \u2014 National Scenic Route 55 through the Jotunheimen mountain massif \u2014 turned out to be the most dramatic high-altitude drive we\u2019ve done anywhere in Scandinavia.<\/p>\n<p>This is our honest guide: what the road is actually like, the stops worth making, what surprised us, and the practical stuff nobody puts in the glossy brochures.<\/p>\n<div class=\"htf-tldr\">\n<div class=\"htf-tldr-label\">Short answer<\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Sognefjellet mountain road<\/strong> (National Scenic Route 55) runs 108\u00a0km between Lom and Skjolden through the highest mountain pass in northern Europe, reaching <strong>1,434 m above sea level<\/strong>. It\u2019s typically open from <strong>late May to October<\/strong>, takes about 2.5 hours without stops, and is best driven in <strong>June or early July<\/strong> when snow still lines the road but conditions are safe. Every pull-out, every short walk, every \u201cjust five more minutes looking at the glacier\u201d added up. Budget generously.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skipping Juvasshytta.<\/strong> We drove past the Galdh\u00f8piggen turn-off the first time because we thought it was just \u201canother hotel road\u201d.
