Norway\u2019s scenic routes, Finland\u2019s empty E8, Sweden\u2019s King\u2019s Highway. But the <strong>Vildmarksvagen<\/strong> (literally \u201cthe Wilderness Road\u201d) sat on our list for two summers before we finally tackled it. When we did, it became one of the most unexpectedly rewarding drives we\u2019ve done in the Nordics.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not dramatic in the way Norway is dramatic. There are no fjords, no vertiginous switchbacks, no famous Instagram arches. What the Vildmarksvagen gives you instead is something rarer: genuine remoteness, kilometre after kilometre of birch and pine wilderness, mirror lakes that have almost no tourism infrastructure around them, and the feeling that you\u2019ve wandered somewhere Sweden hasn\u2019t curated for visitors yet. From our Rovaniemi base we&#8217;ve crossed into Swedish Lapland more times than we can count \u2014 the wilderness road is a natural extension of the same landscape we call home.<\/p>\n<div class=\"htf-tldr\">\n<div class=\"htf-tldr-label\">Short answer<\/div>\n<p>Yes, the <strong>Vildmarksvagen is worth it<\/strong> \u2014 if you come with the right expectations. It\u2019s a <strong>500+ km loop through Sweden\u2019s emptiest county<\/strong>, best driven in <strong>two to three days<\/strong> with a base in \u00c5re, \u00d6stersund, or Str\u00f6msund.
