If you are searching for motorhome hire for Wales, you are probably picturing mountain passes, empty beaches and a castle every few miles. That picture is accurate. What the postcards leave out is how narrow some of the lanes are, which is why the choice of van matters more here than in most countries.

We built this guide from the CampervanPlanet UK listing and general UK road rules, and we say where you should check the details yourself. Wales is not a place where we have driven a rented van, so please read it as a researched planning guide rather than a trip report. If you are new to hiring a van, start with our campervan rental guide, then come back here for the route.

Short Answer

There is no pick-up inside Wales on the CampervanPlanet UK page, so the practical gateways are Chester for North Wales and Bristol for the south, with Manchester and Preston also within reach. When we checked, the UK page showed motorhomes from €75 a day, with typical 7-night prices of about €110 a day in November, €152 in May and €193 in July. A relaxed loop of Snowdonia, the Llŷn Peninsula, Cardigan Bay, Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons is roughly 850–950 km over 10–14 days. Choose a narrower van than you think you need.

In this guide

Where to pick up for Wales

What it costs

North Wales: Snowdonia and the coast

The west coast and Pembrokeshire

South Wales and the Brecon Beacons

Driving rules and tricky roads

A sample itinerary

Booking tips for summer 2027

🚐 Planning this trip by campervan? Get €20 off your rental in the UK with our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20
Compare campervans →

If you book through our links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you — it keeps this blog on the road.

Where to pick up a motorhome for Wales

Wales has no pick-up point of its own on the page we checked, but that matters less than it sounds. The UK listing offers pick-ups in London, Heathrow, Preston, Manchester, Bristol, Chester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Two of those work well as gateways. Chester sits right on the border, so you can be among the Clwydian Hills or on the way to Conwy within the hour. Bristol is the natural start for South Wales, and the page describes it as the gateway to Cornwall, Devon and the Welsh coast. Manchester and Preston add options if you are flying in or want to combine Wales with the Lake District.

Because the UK has a dense motorway network, there is little penalty in starting a little further away, and a one-way rental (Chester out, Bristol back, or the other way round) lets you drive the whole country without doubling back. One-way fees usually apply and depend on the route and the season, so compare the total price rather than the daily rate. The one-way fee guide explains how those charges are usually built.

You can see the current vehicles and dates on the UK motorhome hire page, which compares the rental brands side by side. Code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout when you book through our links.

What motorhome hire costs in Wales and the UK

The numbers below come from the CampervanPlanet UK page when we looked. The cheapest motorhome there was a standard model from €75 a day, and the most expensive a premium model from €248 a day, across four vehicle types. The page also gave typical 7-night prices of about €110 a day in November, €152 in May and €193 in July. In other words, July costs roughly 75 per cent more than November for a similar van, which is a bigger gap than many first-timers expect.

Shoulder season (May, June, September): noticeably cheaper than July and August, with long evenings, quieter roads and campsites that still have space. This is our pick for Wales.

School holidays: late July and August are the peak. Book several months ahead if you need those dates.

Everything on top: fuel (diesel is sold per litre and costs more than in the United States or Australia), campsite fees, insurance extras and any one-way fee. Our guide to insurance, deposits and excess covers the part that surprises people most.

As a rough budgeting habit, take the daily rate, add campsites, then add fuel for around 900 km. A diesel motorhome usually returns somewhere between 9 and 14 litres per 100 km depending on size and driving style, so check the figure for your model.

North Wales: Snowdonia, Conwy and Anglesey

Start in Chester and head west along the north coast. Conwy has a walled town and a castle you can see from the road, and it is an easy first night. From there the A5 and A470 take you into Eryri (Snowdonia), where Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon, 1,085 m) is the highest mountain in Wales. You do not need to climb it to enjoy the area. The Llanberis Pass is a spectacular road, and the villages of Betws-y-Coed and Beddgelert make good pauses.

Be honest with yourself about road width here. The main roads through the national park are fine for a motorhome, but the minor roads that look like shortcuts on a map can be single track with stone walls on both sides. Some famous passes, such as the Bwlch y Groes road, are better skipped in a large van. Use the main routes, and treat any road marked with passing places as a place to slow right down.

Anglesey is worth a night if you have the time, with long beaches and a flat, easy road network. Portmeirion on the south side of Snowdonia is a good stop on the way to the Llŷn Peninsula, where the lanes get narrower again but the beaches are almost empty outside high summer.

Photo: Andrew Tryon, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Cardigan Bay and Pembrokeshire by motorhome

South of Snowdonia the road follows Cardigan Bay, with small seaside towns, steam railways and plenty of campsites with sea views. Aberystwyth is a good base for supplies, and the coast road keeps you near the water for much of the drive. Allow more time than the distance suggests, because speeds on single carriageway roads are low and a motorhome over a certain weight has a lower limit than a car. Check the limit for your van’s weight, as the rules differ for vehicles above about 3.05 tonnes.

Then comes Pembrokeshire, the highlight for many people. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park has beaches, cliffs, seal colonies and the tiny city of St Davids, and the coast path runs the whole way if you want to stretch your legs. Campsites near the best beaches fill up first in July and August, so book ahead rather than hoping for a pitch. Tenby, on the southern side, is the busiest town and the hardest to park in with a long van, so use a car park built for larger vehicles or visit by bus from a campsite.

Wild camping in Wales is a grey area. In general you need the landowner’s permission, and overnight stops on public roads and in laybys are often discouraged or restricted. For a motorhome trip the realistic plan is campsites, and a few farm-style sites that welcome one or two vans. Plan on that, and do not rely on finding free pitches.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. The roads on the peninsula are narrow in places, so pick your route with care. Inland, the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) offer wide green hills, reservoirs and the popular walk to Pen y Fan. The A470 runs north to south through the park and is the easiest road for a motorhome.

Finish in Cardiff or cross the Severn bridges to Bristol to return the van. Cardiff has the Principality Stadium and a compact centre, but city driving in a motorhome is rarely fun, so park on the edge and use public transport for the day. If you are combining your trip with a rugby weekend, the UK page notes that accommodation fills up two to three months ahead for international match weekends, and motorhome pitches near the city will behave the same way.

Driving a motorhome in Wales: the rules that matter

The UK drives on the left, as do Ireland, Malta and Cyprus. If you are used to driving on the right, spend your first hour on a quiet road and give yourself time to adjust at roundabouts, where you give way to traffic from the right. Limits on open roads depend on the road type and your vehicle’s weight.

Signs are bilingual: Welsh and English, with place names that look unfamiliar. Download offline maps before you go, because mobile coverage drops in the mountains and on the coast.

Height and width: know your van’s height before you drive under a bridge or into a car park with a barrier.

Fuel: fill up in towns, because rural petrol stations can be sparse, especially in the middle of Wales.

The main message is to slow down. A Welsh road that looks short on the map can take twice as long as you think, and the trip is better for it.

A sample 12-day Wales itinerary

This is a suggested pace, not a rule.
