Plan the trip for June to September, fill up at every opportunity north of Sodankylä (there can be 120 km between pumps), and book summer 2027 now, because prices for Norway climb steeply in July.

In this guide

The route: Arctic Circle to the cape

When to go, and when not to

Where to pick up the campervan

Fuel, supermarkets and the long gaps

Reindeer, camping and Everyman’s Right

Crossing into Norway: tolls and prices

Booking summer 2027 now

🚐 Planning this trip by campervan? Get €20 off your rental in Finland and Norway with our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20
Compare campervans →

If you book through our links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you — it keeps this blog on the road.

The route: Arctic Circle to the cape

The classic line is Rovaniemi to Sodankylä, Ivalo and Inari, then across into Norway at Karigasniemi or Utsjoki, down to the Porsanger fjord and finally north to Honningsvåg on the island of Magerøya. The North Cape plateau lies about 30 km beyond the town. Total distance depends on your route, but roughly 1,000 km each way is a safe planning figure, and the road is mostly two-lane with 80 km/h limits.

Do not try to do it in two days. The scenery changes every hour: pine forest becomes fell country, then open tundra, then the Norwegian coast. We would stop at Inari for the Sámi museum and the lake, again in Karasjok, and at least one night on the Porsanger fjord before the final push. Our Rovaniemi campervan guide covers the first stretch.

When to go, and when not to

This is a summer route. From early June to mid-July the sun does not set in Rovaniemi, and the farther north you go the longer it lasts. That is the great pleasure of this trip, and also the reason the long daylight is useful: you can drive until 22:00 without headlights. The Lapland page gives June to August a typical 12–22°C with 20–24 hours of daylight.

September is quieter and usually cheaper, and the autumn colours (ruska) start in late August in the north. Winter is a different trip altogether: polar night, temperatures that can fall to −30°C, and a van that needs an engine heater plugged in. It can be done, but it is not a first-timer’s route, and the final stretch to the North Cape can involve convoy driving in bad weather, so check the Norwegian Public Roads Administration before planning any winter version.

Photo: Hungrytravelfamily

Where to pick up the campervan

The Lapland page lists Rovaniemi Airport, Rovaniemi city, Ivalo Airport and Kittilä Airport as pick-up points, with Oulu and Kemi further south. For this route, Rovaniemi or Ivalo makes most sense: Ivalo is about 300 km further north and saves you a day of driving if you fly in. Rovaniemi Airport is only 10 km from the city centre, so it is easy to combine with a stay in town.

In our November 2026 research, campervan rental in Rovaniemi started from about €128 a day. For the Finnish side overall, the Finland campervan page shows a typical €178 a day in the May and September shoulder season and about €286 a day in the July and August peak. If you want to end the trip in a different country, ask about cross-border and one-way fees at the booking stage, since they vary by company and can be significant.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. On some stretches, such as Inari to Utsjoki or Kilpisjärvi to Karesuando, you can go 120 km or more without a station, and many unmanned pumps take only cards, sometimes only Nordic ones. Carry a second card and some cash.

Fuel in Lapland tends to be a little more expensive than in the south: the listing quotes diesel at around €1.80–2.00 a litre and petrol at €1.95–2.15. Stock up on groceries in Rovaniemi or Ivalo, because shops thin out quickly and prices in Norway are noticeably higher. A good rule on the Finnish side is to buy for three days at a time.

Reindeer, camping and Everyman’s Right

Reindeer are the real hazard on this route. They wander across the road without warning, especially in summer when they come down to escape insects, and a collision can wreck a van. Slow down when you see one, expect more behind it, and never assume they will move on cue.

Camping is easier than people expect. The Lapland page gives campervan pitches with hookup at about €25–45 per night in summer. Everyman’s Right (jokamiehenoikeus) lets you walk, pick berries and camp in a tent in the wild, but it does not cover parking a motorhome wherever you like, so use campsites or designated stopping places. Whatever the situation, never dump waste outdoors: the fines the listing mentions run into hundreds of euros.

Photo: Hungrytravelfamily

Crossing into Norway: tolls and prices

Finland and Norway are both in the Schengen area, so the border is usually a sign rather than a checkpoint, but Norway is not in the EU, so check your rental company’s rules on taking the van across and whether insurance is valid. Norway uses an automatic toll system called AutoPASS, and rental companies usually manage it for you and bill afterwards, sometimes with a handling fee. Ask at pick-up.

The prices change when you cross the border. The Norway campervan page showed a typical €178 a day in late November, €211 in mid-May and €394 in mid-July, so a trip that crosses into Norway in July can double the daily cost of the van. Campsite prices are roughly NOK 250–500 (about €22–45) a night, and ferry crossings elsewhere in Norway can cost NOK 300–800 per vehicle.
