Its hawker centres serve Chinese, Malay and Indian food side by side, and halal, vegetarian and non-pork options are common across the city. That is general travel knowledge, and it is true when you choose your own meals. A guided food tour is different: it follows a fixed route with a fixed set of tastings, and the dietary flexibility belongs to the operator, not to the city.

The route of the Singapore Food Tour starts opposite the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown, according to A Chef's Tour's page. Photo: A Chef's Tour

That is why we look closely at what A Chef’s Tour’s pages say. That is a clear answer, and we would take it at face value. Its dishes include roasted pork and char siu.

It is also worth knowing what kind of vegetarian you are. Some travellers eat eggs, dairy and fish sauce and avoid only meat; others avoid every animal product, including stocks and shrimp paste, which are common in Southeast Asian cooking. A tour page that says unsuitable for vegetarians is usually thinking about the stricter reading, and a guide who is willing to improvise for the looser reading may still be able to help. That is a conversation to have before you book, not on the pavement.

The Singapore Food Tour lists no vegetarian line at all. That is not a yes. The page describes soya sauce chicken, oyster cakes and a branch of Hawker Chan, which the page calls the world’s first Michelin-starred street hawker dish, which suggests a meat-heavy route, but it also mentions popiah, dosas and sweet treats. A Chef’s Tour doesn’t list this, so ask before booking (info@achefstour.com), and ask specifically how many of the 12+ tastings are meat-free and whether a guide can swap any.

Our honest view is that a strict vegetarian or vegan is better off eating in Little India on their own than paying US$99 for a tour that was not designed for them.

If you do write to the operator, keep the question concrete. “Are you vegetarian-friendly?” invites a polite yes. “Which of the twelve tastings on the route contain meat, fish sauce or shrimp paste, and what would you serve me instead?” invites an answer you can act on. The same applies to every diet in this guide.

Pescatarian

Both pages say pescatarian is possible, with limits. The Singapore Food Tour says meat is present in 2-3 dishes, with no alternatives available. The Private Food Tour says meat is present in 5-6 dishes, with no alternatives possible. In practice that means a pescatarian will skip a few tastings without a substitute, and will pay the full price for the rest.

<img loading="lazy" src="https://hungrytravelfamily.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/singapore-private-food-tour-a-chef-s-tour-photo-2.jpg" alt="Street food in Little India. It says gluten is present in 2-3 tastings, so it is fine for a mild intolerance, but it is not advised for coeliac disease because of unavoidable traces of soy sauce in some tastings. The Singapore Food Tour page says nothing, and its menu includes soya sauce chicken, so we would assume soy sauce is present and ask.

For a coeliac traveller, our advice is simple: do not book either tour without written confirmation from the operator, and treat the Private tour’s own warning as the answer.

Halal

Singapore has a large Muslim community and many halal-certified food stalls, which is general knowledge and part of why the city is so good for halal eaters. Neither of A Chef’s Tour’s Singapore pages lists a halal line, however. The Private tour mentions roasted pork and char siu. The first tour names a branch of Hawker Chan and oyster cakes, and it ends at Sultan Mosque, but the page does not say whether any vendor on the route is halal-certified.

A Chef’s Tour doesn’t list this, so a halal traveller should ask for a clear statement before booking, in writing, and decide on the answer. On the pages of several of the company’s other Asian tours, halal is described as unsuitable, so do not assume Singapore is different without asking.

Allergies, Lactose and Other Needs

Neither Singapore page lists a nut, peanut, seafood, shellfish, lactose or beef line. A Chef’s Tour does list these on some of its other tours, so their absence here means the information is not on the page, not that the tour is free of those ingredients. Oyster cakes, oyster sauce and soy are common in the cuisine, and peanut is common in satay and rojak.

Street-food and hawker tours cannot promise an allergen-free plate. Anyone with a severe allergy should treat these tours as a risk and speak to the operator, not rely on the page.

What We Would Ask Before Booking

If you have a dietary need, send A Chef’s Tour a short message through the booking page or at info@achefstour.com. Ask: which tastings contain pork, beef, shellfish, nuts, gluten and dairy; whether any vendor on the route is halal-certified; whether a guide can swap a dish; and whether the tour will run if you are the only guest with the restriction. Keep the reply, and mention it again when you meet the guide.

The cancellation window helps: both tours allow a full refund up to 48 hours before the experience. If the answer is not what you hoped, you still have time to walk away.

How to Book

Both tours are booked on achefstour.com through a live calendar with instant confirmation. You pay the normal price, and we never take payment. Children are not mentioned on either Singapore page, so ask about a child policy before booking with a family.

Two practical points that also matter for diets. First, the Singapore Food Tour is described as a walking tour and the subway, but the page does not say whether the fare for the ride from Chinatown to Little India is included, so ask. Second, the meeting points are Maxwell MRT station for the first tour and street level at Farrer Park MRT station, Exit H, for the Private tour, where the page says your guide will be waiting in an A Chef’s Tour t-shirt and the tour ends at Little India MRT station. Neither includes a pick-up or drop-off.

On value: at US$99 and US$92 per person these are among the most expensive tours A Chef’s Tour lists in Asia. If you must skip two or three tastings with no substitute, the price per tasting you actually eat goes up, and that is worth weighing honestly against a day of self-guided hawker eating, where you pay only for what you can eat.

FAQ

<details>
Is the Singapore Food Tour suitable for vegetarians?

A Chef’s Tour doesn’t list a vegetarian line for the Singapore Food Tour, so ask before booking.
