There are no road tolls for ordinary cars and campervans on the main network, no vignette to buy, and no toll transponder to arrange with the rental company. Compare that with Norway, where tolls and ferries arrive on your card weeks later. We drive here every year, and it is a relief.

What Finland does have is distance. It is a long country, and the empty space between towns is part of the appeal. From Helsinki to Rovaniemi is roughly 830 km by road, and Rovaniemi to the Norwegian coast at Tromsø is another 550-odd km. A day of 300 to 400 km is comfortable; trying for more usually means less enjoyment. CampervanPlanet lists campervans in Finland with rentals starting at five depots: Helsinki, Rovaniemi, Tampere, Oulu and Turku airports.

Distances, speed limits and how long a day really takes

Speed limits are lower than many visitors expect. On motorways the limit is typically 120 km/h in summer and 100 km/h in winter, on main roads 80 to 100 km/h, and in built-up areas usually 40 to 50 km/h. In a campervan, you will probably settle at 80 to 90 km/h anyway, because of fuel and wind. Speed cameras and mobile patrols are common, and fines are linked to income, so a speeding ticket can be very expensive.

Plan on an average of 60 to 70 km/h door to door, including stops. That puts 400 km at about six hours and 600 km into a full day. The roads are well maintained, traffic is light outside the Helsinki area, and overtaking is simple on the straight sections, but the long straights and dull forest can cause tiredness. Stop every two hours at one of the many roadside rest areas, and use the opportunity to look at a lake.

Always drive with dipped headlights, which are expected in Finland at all times outside built-up areas, and keep a warning triangle and high-visibility vest in the van; rental companies normally supply them.

Camp for the night. Moose can cross anywhere, especially at dawn and dusk, and a collision with one is serious. Watch for the yellow warning signs and slow down in forest stretches. In Lapland, reindeer wander across the road in groups, often in summer when they seek relief from insects, and they do not move quickly. Slow down, wait, and do not honk.

If you hit an animal, you must report it to the emergency number 112, and the police will typically arrange for a local hunter to handle the animal. Check with your rental company about damage cover for animal collisions, because the excess can be high. Driving more slowly at night is the best insurance.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. The north is thinner, so we follow a simple rule: when the tank is half full and you pass a station in Lapland, fill up.

Prices are generally lower than in Norway and similar to Sweden, and many stations have self-service pumps that take a card or app. Diesel and petrol are both common; check which fuel your van needs, and note that some stations in remote areas close early or at weekends. Supermarket forecourts are often a little cheaper than the big highway stations, and you can pay at the pump with a contactless card. We budget about 10 to 12 litres per 100 km for a larger campervan, which makes a 1,000 km loop a meaningful fuel cost to plan for.

Winter driving: what changes between December and March

Winter in Finland is serious but manageable, and the roads are among the best-maintained in the world. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to the end of February, and rental vans will be fitted with them, often studded in the north. Roads are ploughed and gritted, but ice, snow and darkness change how you drive: leave more distance, brake gently and avoid sudden steering.

In the far north, the polar night means days of only a few hours of weak light, and temperatures of minus 15°C or lower are normal. Plug-in heaters, a van with a good diesel heater and a working water system are important. Check with the company how to avoid frozen pipes and how to start a cold engine. Winter is also northern lights season, and an inexpensive time to hire: CampervanPlanet shows about €157 a day as the typical November to March price.

If you do not feel comfortable with winter driving, travel in May or September instead, when the typical price is about €178 a day and the roads are clear.

Choosing a route and a pick-up point

For first-timers we suggest one of four mapped routes. The Lakeland Grand Loop is about 1,000 km over seven to nine days from Helsinki, passing Savonlinna, Kuopio, Jyväskylä and Tampere, on easy two-lane roads. The Lapland Arctic Road is 660 km return from Rovaniemi to Inari, through Sodankylä and Saariselkä. The Turku Archipelago Trail is a 250 km loop with mostly free car ferries. The Southern Coast along the King’s Road is a short, easy drive from Helsinki to Porvoo and beyond.

For Lapland, pick up in Rovaniemi and be on the Arctic Circle within minutes. Parking overnight in a van on private land, in nature reserves, or in places with signs is not allowed without permission. Use campsites for most nights, and treat roadside rest areas as short stops. There are hundreds of campsites across the country, many beside lakes and with saunas.

In summer, popular campsites on the Lakeland and archipelago routes fill up in July, so book ahead.
