The friluftsloven — Outdoor Recreation Act of 1957 — grants everyone the right to move through and stay overnight on uncultivated land, free of charge and without asking permission. Norwegians call this Allemannsretten: Everyman’s Right.

We arrived in Norway expecting to spend money on campsites almost every night. Instead, we spent almost nothing. Once you understand the rules, the country opens up in a way that almost no other destination does.

What “uncultivated land” means in practice

The law draws a line between innmark (cultivated or developed land: farms, gardens, golf courses, built-up areas) and utmark (everything else: mountains, forests, uncultivated shorelines, open fjord shores). You can camp freely on utmark. You cannot camp on innmark without the landowner’s permission.

In practical terms this means:

Mountain plateaus, fell summits, and high valleys → free camping, almost anywhere you can reach

Uninhabited fjord shores and rocky coastline → free camping

National park interiors → generally free, but some parks impose specific rules (Rondane, for instance, has zone restrictions)

Farmland, even if it looks empty → ask or move on

Anything within 150 m of a dwelling → not allowed without permission

The two-night rule and leave-no-trace obligation

You may stay in one spot for up to two consecutive nights. After that, you must move on unless you are in a remote high-mountain area where the landowner is unlikely to object to a longer stay. The law also requires you to leave the site exactly as you found it: no fire scars, no litter, no damage to vegetation. Fires are permitted from 15 September to 14 April; from 15 April to 14 September, open fires are prohibited within 5 m of forest or vegetation — which, in summer, means almost everywhere below the treeline. Use a gas stove.

Our 8 favourite free campsites in Norway

We drove Norway over two separate trips, once south-to-north in early summer and once around the Lofoten Islands in late June under the midnight sun. These are the spots we actually used and would return to — ranked loosely by how easy they are to reach and how reliable the setting is.

1. Sognefjellet mountain road (Sogn og Fjordane)

Norway’s highest mountain pass road, National Scenic Route 55, crosses the Jotunheimen plateau at over 1,400 m. In June and July the snow has melted enough to reach the high ground, and the light at 23:00 is extraordinary. We parked at the Juvasshytta turnoff and walked ten minutes to a flat rock ledge above the clouds. No people, no noise, temperature around 5°C, total silence. This remains the finest free camp we have found anywhere in Scandinavia.

2. Lofoten road pullouts near Reine (Nordland)

The E10 through Lofoten runs between dramatic peaks and mirror-still fjord inlets. The village of Reine appears on most “most beautiful places on Earth” lists, and for once the lists are not wrong. The key is timing: most campers congregate on the Reine viewpoint. Drive 4 km further west toward Moskenes, and small gravel turnouts appear beside the water where you can pitch a tent legally and wake up with Reine’s spires directly in front of you.

3. Trollstigen valley floor (Møre og Romsdal)

While tourists queue at the top of Trollstigen’s famous serpentine road, the valley below — around the Istra river — is quiet, accessible, and has flat grassy areas on the outer bank that are utmark. We camped here on a Tuesday evening in late June and had the entire valley to ourselves. The waterfall sound is loud, so pack earplugs if you need silence to sleep.

4. Hardangervidda plateau (between Hordaland and Telemark)

Norway’s largest mountain plateau and one of the most accessible. Take the RV7 from Bergen toward Oslo and pull off at any of a dozen gravel bays above 1,200 m. The plateau feels genuinely remote, and in July it is carpeted in low Arctic flowers. The reindeer will investigate your tent at dawn; this is not a problem, just something to know.

5. Geirangerfjord upper lip near Dalsnibba (Sunnmøre)

The tourist masses are down at the fjord floor and on the cruise ships. Drive up the toll road to Dalsnibba viewpoint (about 300 NOK for the car), then walk back along the ridge 500 m to where the crowds stop. The view down into Geiranger is identical to the postcard, but you are alone with it. This is technically a pay-to-access area, but the wild camp itself is free once you have paid the road toll.

6. Romsdalseggen ridge base camp, Åndalsnes

The Romsdalseggen ridge hike is regarded as one of Norway’s finest day walks. The trailhead is accessible from Åndalsnes, and the flat ground at the base of the ridge — before you begin the serious ascent — is a legitimate wild camp. Start the hike at 05:00 in June and you will have the full ridge to yourself before 09:00.

7. Varanger Peninsula, Eastern Finnmark

This is remote Norway. The Varanger Peninsula juts into the Barents Sea at the country’s far northeast corner, and the coastline is as close to genuine wilderness as western Europe gets. King eiders, steller’s eiders, and rough-legged buzzards are common. We camped for three consecutive nights near Hamningberg (abandoned fishing village, legally accessible) and saw nobody else.

8. Sognefjord shoreline pullouts between Flåm and Gudvangen

The inner Sognefjord is gentler than the high mountain alternatives: lower altitude, calmer water, and ferries that give the landscape scale. The minor road on the south shore between Aurland and Undredal passes several uninhabited rocky bays where a tent fits neatly. The light on the north wall of the fjord after 21:00 in summer is worth staying awake for.

→

Related read Planning to drive between these spots? Knowing how to execute a comfortable, stress-free free camp in Norway is another. These are the things we learnt the hard way.

Arrive in daylight, even if it takes longer. In June and July, daylight lasts 22+ hours north of the Arctic Circle — use it. Choosing a campsite in the midnight sun is easy; choosing one in the dark on an unfamiliar road is not.

Water sources are reliable but not infinite. Mountain streams above 1,000 m are almost always clean in Norway. Below that, check upstream for grazing animals. Carry a filter as insurance.

Wind is underestimated by first-timers. Exposed fjord lips and plateau edges look calm until 02:00. Guy-lines are not optional.

Insects in coastal lowlands are fierce in July. Head nets are worth the weight from Tromsø northward. Above the treeline it is usually fine.

Mobile coverage is surprisingly good. Telenor covers most of the major scenic routes. Offline maps are still essential for the Varanger Peninsula and the far north.

ATMs are rare once you leave towns. Norway is card-first, but a small cash reserve (500–1,000 NOK) covers toll booths that do not accept foreign cards and the occasional farm stall.

The 150 m rule applies to holiday cabins too. In Norway, private cabins (hytter) are considered dwellings. The rule applies year-round, even if the cabin looks empty.

Check national park rules individually. Each park publishes its own zone map. Rondane is strict; Jotunheimen is permissive. Five minutes on the park website before arrival is worth it.

Car camping vs tent camping: what changes

Both are legal under Allemannsretten, but they have meaningfully different logistics in Norway. Here is what we learned switching between the two across our trips.

Car camping (sleeping in the car): Technically legal on a public road pullout as long as you are not blocking traffic and stay under two nights. No tent required. The gain is warmth and security; the loss is that you are limited to spots a car can reach. Norway has excellent gravel pullouts on every scenic route precisely because this is common practice.

Tent camping above the road: Requires a ten-minute walk in most cases, but the reward is isolation. Even the most popular viewpoints in Lofoten are deserted 300 m off the road.

Campervan / motorhome: Technically permitted under the same rules as a car, but in practice some popular spots have erected “no overnight parking” signs that apply to motorhomes specifically. Always read the sign carefully — some ban parking; some ban camping; some ban both.

Hammock camping: Permitted where trees exist (most of southern Norway, much of coastal west Norway). Above the treeline on the high plateau, you will need a tent.

Budget impact: We averaged zero accommodation cost on a two-week Norway road trip using wild camping and occasional DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) huts. Paid campsites in Norway range from 200 to 450 NOK per night (roughly €18–€40). Over 14 nights, free camping saved us approximately €350–450 compared to paying every night.

→

Useful companion If you’re planning a full Norway road trip, our Norwegian Scenic Routes guide maps all 18 official routes with honest notes on which are genuinely unmissable and which can be skipped if time is tight.

Mistakes we made wild camping in Norway

We have now slept under Norwegian skies on several trips. Here is every mistake we made and would rather you did not repeat.

Pitching too close to the road. Sound carries further than you think on still Norwegian nights. On our first trip we chose a beautiful spot 50 m from the E10 in Lofoten. Every campervan that passed at 03:00 woke us up. Move a five-minute walk off the tarmac.

Ignoring the tide on fjord shores. The Sognefjord has almost no tidal range. Hardangerfjord has more. We once pitched on a narrow rocky ledge that looked permanent; by morning the tide had reduced our usable space by half. Check tidal range before pitching below the high-water line.

Trusting satellite imagery for ground truth. Google Maps shows open ground that, in reality, is bog. In Norway this is common: what looks like green grass from above is often saturated peat. Carry lightweight camp shoes for moving around a soft pitch.

Not checking the national park zone before the long walk in. We hiked 6 km into a valley in Rondane before discovering we were in a restricted camping zone. The ranger was polite, but we had to move. Download the park’s zone map before you leave the trailhead, not when you arrive at your planned spot.

No headlamp in midsummer. We left headlamps in the car on a “bright night” hike in late June. The return at 23:30 was still light — but we entered a forested section where it was suddenly dark. Always carry a headlamp in Norway regardless of the forecast light conditions.

Underestimating how cold midsummer gets at altitude. Sognefjellet in July. Air temperature 4°C at midnight. We had a three-season sleeping bag rated to −5°C and were fine, but two members of our group with summer bags were uncomfortably cold. At 1,000 m+ in Norway, always bring a bag rated to 0°C minimum.

Frequently asked questions about free camping in Norway

<details>

Is wild camping really free in Norway?

Yes, completely. Norway’s Allemannsretten (Everyman’s Right) is enshrined in the 1957 Outdoor Recreation Act and gives everyone — Norwegian or foreign — the right to stay overnight on uncultivated land at no charge and without permission from the landowner. You pay nothing. The only costs are your own equipment.

</details><details>

Can I park my car or campervan overnight for free?

Yes, on most public road pullouts and lay-bys. Sleeping in your vehicle follows the same Allemannsretten principles as tent camping. However, some specific locations — particularly in Lofoten and around popular viewpoints — have posted signs prohibiting overnight parking for motorhomes. Always read posted signs. If no sign exists, you are generally free to stay.

</details><details>

How do I find specific free campsite spots?

The most reliable tools are: (1) iOverlander and Park4Night apps, which have community-verified wild camping spots across Norway; (2) satellite view on Google Maps or maps.me to identify flat open ground away from dwellings; (3) Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) trail maps, which mark unmanned huts and common wild camping zones on major routes. Asking at local tourist offices also works — Norwegians are generally happy to point you toward good spots.

</details><details>

Are there any places in Norway where wild camping is not allowed?

Yes. You cannot camp on cultivated land (farms, gardens, lawns, golf courses) or within 150 m of a dwelling without permission. Some national parks have specific zone rules — Rondane in particular has designated camping zones. Municipal beaches near cities may have local bylaws restricting overnight stays. Always check the specific national park’s website if you plan to camp inside one.

</details><details>

Can I light a fire at my wild campsite?

From 15 September to 14 April, yes — open fires are generally permitted. From 15 April to 14 September, open fires are banned within 5 m of forest or combustible vegetation. Since summer wild camping in Norway almost always involves some proximity to heather, bog grass, or trees, this means open fires are effectively not an option in summer. Use a gas stove. Fines for illegal fires can be significant, and the damage they cause to thin Arctic soils is permanent.

</details><details>

Is it safe to drink water from Norwegian mountain streams?

In general, yes — above 1,000 m and upstream of any grazing activity, Norwegian mountain water is among the purest in the world. Below that altitude, check upstream: reindeer herding areas and sheep pastures can introduce pathogens. The safest approach is a lightweight filter (Sawyer Squeeze or similar) — it weighs almost nothing, costs little, and removes all doubt.

</details>

A final word from Rovaniemi

Free camping in Norway is one of the most honest pleasures left in European travel. You arrive at a fjord shoulder in the long evening light, you pitch your tent on bare rock, and the country simply gives you the night for nothing — on the condition that you leave it exactly as you found it. Most people do. The Allemannsretten works because Norwegians trust it, and visitors who use it well are part of keeping that trust intact.

The spots we have described are not secrets; they are places that reward a little effort. The Sognefjellet pullout, the Lofoten road edge near Moskenes, the Trollstigen valley floor — none require off-road vehicles or specialist equipment. They require only willingness to walk five minutes away from where the crowds stop. In Norway, five minutes is almost always enough.

If you are building a Norway road trip and want to know whether a specific spot is viable for free camping — distance from dwellings, park rules, road access — drop us a message. We have the maps open, and we are always glad to help a fellow camper find somewhere good to sleep.

J&A

Written by

Joona & Alla

A Finnish-Ukrainian couple living in Rovaniemi, Finland.
