From there the E10 runs west to Abisko National Park in roughly 100 km, with Sámi villages, reindeer herds and the old iron-ore landscape on the way. Jukkasjärvi, home of the famous Icehotel, is a short drive from Kiruna.

The scale is the first thing to understand. Stockholm to Abisko is about 1,350 km by road, so most visitors fly to Kiruna Airport and collect the campervan there. CampervanPlanet lists Kiruna Airport among five Swedish pick-up points, alongside Stockholm, Gothenburg Airport, Uppsala and Malmö, and describes it as the Arctic Lapland gateway for the northern lights, Abisko and Sámi culture.

If you are starting from the Finnish side, our guide to a campervan trip in Lapland covers the Rovaniemi end of the same landscape.

When to go: lights in autumn, sun in early summer

Swedish Lapland has two headline seasons. In June to August the days are very long, with midnight sun in the far north, all sites open and mild temperatures of roughly 14 to 23°C. It is also the priciest period: CampervanPlanet’s index shows a typical €242 a day, and campsites fill.

The best value is May and September, at a typical €148 a day: cool, fresh weather, fewer visitors, spring blooms in May and autumn colour in September. April and October are transition months with 2 to 11°C and the first northern-lights chances in October, though some campsites are only just opening or closing.

From November to March it is cold and snowy, with temperatures from about -5 to 2°C in the index’s average, daylight of about six hours in midwinter, winter tyres required and many campsites closed. In exchange you get the lowest prices (a typical €141 a day) and a strong shot at the aurora. Temperatures in the far north can be much colder than the index average, so ask the rental company what heating and bedding come with the van.

The long route: Stockholm to Abisko

Abisko, northern Sweden. Photo: Hungrytravelfamily

CampervanPlanet maps an Arctic Lapland Expedition as a 7 to 9 day, 1,350 km drive from Stockholm to Abisko, best in April and October. It follows the E4 up the Baltic coast and then the E10 into Lapland, breaking the haul in Gävle, Sundsvall, Umeå and Luleå before Kiruna and Abisko.

It is the road-trip version of the trip and it makes sense if you have two weeks or more. Two warnings from the page: it is a committed one-way drive, so budget for fuel, daylight and a vehicle relocation fee, and winter conditions make driving in the dark slower than the kilometres suggest. Our rule is to keep daily distances to about 350 to 400 km in the north, because of reindeer on the road, speed limits and the need to stop for photographs.

The shorter option is to fly into Kiruna and spend four to five days on a loop: Kiruna, Jukkasjärvi, Abisko, back via the Torneträsk lake shore. That is the version most families should choose.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. It has one of the clearest skies in Sweden, which is why it is famous for northern lights. There is a rewarding walking trail, a sky station and, in summer, a midnight sun that makes a 1 am hike feel normal. We were there in late spring and loved the quiet, with the lake still partly frozen and the light low and gold in the evening.

Around Kiruna, visit the town centre, the mine (the rail line and ore trains are part of the landscape), the Sámi cultural sites and the Icehotel at Jukkasjärvi. In winter, dog sledding, snowmobile and aurora tours are offered locally, and you can base yourself in the van and book them as excursions.

For other parts of Sweden, CampervanPlanet also maps the Bohuslän west coast from Gothenburg to Strömstad and Skåne and Österlen in the south. Our guide to wild camping in Sweden sets out the rules, and the sensible approach is to use campsites and designated stopping places for most nights.

On the road, watch for reindeer, especially at dusk and in autumn, and keep your speed down. Winter tyres are required in winter conditions, and the rental fleet will fit them. Fuel stops can be far apart in the north, so fill up when the tank is half full. Cover and excess are rental-company specific, and gravel roads are often excluded, so read the terms.

What it costs and how to book

Using the CampervanPlanet index for a seven-night hire: about €141 a day in the November to March window, €148 in May and September, and €242 in June to August, with offers from €70. The index covers 38 vehicles and six rental companies, with 471 prices. Add fuel, campsite fees (cheaper outside peak) and the one-way fee if you do not return the van to Kiruna.

The best deals are mid-season.
