A campervan turns that idea into a route. The Finnish Lakeland, the huge web of lakes between Helsinki and the north, is flat enough to drive without stress, quiet enough that you can usually find a pitch, and close enough to Helsinki that you can fly in, collect the van and be at your first lake in under two hours.

We live in Rovaniemi, in Lapland, and the Lakeland is where many Finns spend their summers, so we can give you local context. Roads are well surfaced, signage is clear, traffic is light outside Helsinki and there are no road tolls on the loop we describe. You drive on the right and distances are manageable. The Lakeland also has a lot of lakeside camping, from big family campsites with saunas to quiet places run by a local family.

Then there is the right to roam, called jokamiehenoikeus. In principle it lets you walk, ski and camp for a night or two in the countryside without asking permission, as long as you stay away from homes and leave no trace, but it does not apply to driving off-road or parking a campervan wherever you like. For a campervan, the sensible plan is to use campsites and guest harbours most nights and check the current rules before stopping elsewhere.

The Finnish Lakeland Grand Loop in numbers

CampervanPlanet describes a full circuit through the heart of the Lakeland starting and ending in Helsinki. It is about 1,000 km, takes 7 to 9 days, is rated easy and suitable for a two-wheel-drive vehicle, and is best in June and September. The route runs Helsinki, Lahti, Mikkeli, Savonlinna, Kuopio, Jyväskylä and Tampere, then back to Helsinki.

That is a good number of kilometres for a week, but remember how little of it is motorway. Most days are two to three hours of driving, which leaves time for a swim, a sauna and a long dinner. Plan shorter days than you think. The temptation in a country this empty is to cover too much, and the Lakeland rewards doing the opposite.

Photo: Elgaard, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Day by day: how we would split it

Days 1–2, Helsinki to Lahti and Mikkeli: pick up the van, stock up at a supermarket on the way out, and aim for a lakeside campsite near Mikkeli by the first evening. May and September are the best value at about €178 a day. June to August is the peak at about €286 a day, with warm bright days of 15 to 22°C and 18 to 19 hours of daylight.

We would pick June or early September. Midsummer, the weekend around 20 to 26 June, is a special moment, but many Finns head to their cottages and traffic leaves cities, so campsites near the water fill up. July is warm and lively, but mosquitoes can be a nuisance near still water, so bring repellent and a net for the doors. September brings the autumn colours that we call ruska, cooler weather and far quieter roads.

Spring and autumn nights are cold, and the sea and lakes stay cold into June. Check what heating the van has, because it is much more useful here than air conditioning would be. Winter tyres are required on Finnish roads in winter, and rental vans in that season are normally equipped, but confirm it when you book.

Where to pick up and what it costs

CampervanPlanet lists five depots in Finland: Helsinki Airport, Rovaniemi Airport, Tampere Airport, Oulu Airport and Turku Airport. For the Lakeland loop, Helsinki is the natural start and finish. That is the cheapest offer across the year, and in high summer typical prices are much higher. A week in July can easily cost more than a week in September for the same kind of van, so if your dates are flexible, a shoulder-season week saves real money. Fuel up in towns too, since stations can be sparse on quiet roads. Mobile coverage is good almost everywhere, which makes navigation easy.

Saunas are part of the point. Many campsites have a shared sauna, and some have lakeside ones you can book. Swim afterwards if the water is warm enough, and follow the local rule of never swimming alone in cold water. Pack a reusable water bottle, because tap water in Finland is excellent.

Finally, keep a loose plan. The roads are quiet, the days are long in summer and there are always more lakes than you can use.

Ready for the open road?

Book your Finland campervan

Compare prices across 160+ campervan and motorhome rental brands, get a free 1GB eSIM with every booking — and €20 off with code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20.
Check prices & availability →
Affiliate link — same price for you, small commission for us.

Frequently asked questions

<details>
How long does the Finnish Lakeland loop take by campervan?

CampervanPlanet describes the Lakeland Grand Loop as 7 to 9 days and about 1,000 km, starting and ending in Helsinki, with easy two-wheel-drive roads.
</details>
<details>
How much does a campervan cost in Finland?

CampervanPlanet’s November 2026 index shows a typical €286 a day in June to August, €178 in May and September, and €157 from November to March.
