A wide frozen lake, snow-covered pines and a sky that changes colour through the afternoon are better than any backdrop we could build. Our job is to add warmth, scale and a place for two people to stand, then get out of the way.<\/p><p>That is why our winter settings are quite restrained: a handful of candles and lanterns, a fire, a bouquet, a toast. Too much d\u00e9cor in a white landscape starts to look like a stage, and the photographs lose the sense of being alone in a very big place. Because the colour is right. Flame is warm against the cold blue of snow in twilight, and a lantern gives a glow that a lamp does not. In the polar-night season, when daylight is short and soft, the blue hour is when candles look their best, and it is also warmer than the late evening. It keeps you warm, so a proposal can be unhurried. It gives the photographer a warm light source that reads beautifully in an otherwise blue scene. And it gives the two of you something to do with your hands and your eyes while your heart is pounding. Afterwards, the fire is where the toast happens and where the couple photographs often begin.<\/p><p>If you want a longer fire evening, ask for add-ons. Fresh petals freeze and wilt almost immediately at \u221220 or \u221230 \u00b0C.
