Most shops, offices and many services are closed, and Finns spend it at home. There are some formal events and a television reception that half the country watches in the evening, but nothing that crowds the town. For a traveller that means calm streets, a slower pace and a city that feels like it belongs to the people who live in it.<\/p><p>The tradition that matters for a proposal is the candles. On the evening of 6 December, Finns light two candles in the window, usually blue and white. Walk through Rovaniemi at dusk and you see small flames in almost every window. After dark, the forest is lit by candles and fire, and on a clear night the northern lights are possible.
