Where we give numbers for cars and hotels, we label them as rough illustrations, because those prices move quickly. You can see current van prices on the Iceland campervan page, and code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout.

Short Answer

A campervan in Iceland typically costs about €137 a day from November to March and €355 a day from June to August (the cheapest offers start from around €40). It shows that renting a campervan in Iceland typically costs about €137 a day from November to March and €355 a day from June to August. August is the most expensive month, at about €410 a day, and the cheapest offers start from around €40 a day for basic vehicles in the low season.

So the headline is the gap: a van costs roughly two and a half times as much in high summer as in winter. That fits Iceland’s whole tourism pattern, and it is the reason this comparison changes completely by season. If you want to explore the numbers, our Iceland campervan prices page breaks them down by month and company.

The van’s daily rate is the whole accommodation and transport bill in one, which is its great strength. You still pay fuel, campsite fees, food and insurance extras, but you do not pay a second bill for a bed.

The car and hotels alternative

With a car, you pay for the vehicle, the fuel and a bed every night. Hotels and guesthouses in Iceland are priced for a short, intense summer season, and a double room can cost well over €150–250 a night in July and August. Cheaper guesthouses with shared bathrooms exist but go quickly, and rural areas have very few rooms, which forces your route.

As a rough illustration only, not a quote: a couple travelling seven days in July might pay €2,500 for a campervan, whereas a small car and six nights in mid-range accommodation could easily match or exceed that before you add food. Prices change, so check both before you decide. The pattern holds, though: when beds are scarce and expensive, a van gets better value.

In winter the logic flips. Hotels and guesthouses are cheaper, daylight is short, and driving to a warm room after a day of icy roads is appealing. Campsites are mostly closed from October to April, and a campervan with a good heater is essential. If you are thinking about winter, read our Ring Road campervan itinerary for the practical side.

Freedom and flexibility

A campervan gives you freedom of timing. If the weather is clear at the south coast, you can stay for the sunset and cook dinner where you are. If a storm is coming, you can drive away from it, rather than being tied to a hotel booking a day’s drive ahead.

But the freedom has limits. Wild camping is not allowed in Iceland, so you have to plan nights at official campsites. In summer, popular sites near Reykjavík, Vík, Skaftafell and Mývatn fill up, and in some places campsites close in the shoulder season. Booking ahead is no longer optional in July. A car with hotels is rigid, but your night is guaranteed.

Photo: Elgaard, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. Iceland’s weather can turn within an hour, and a campervan is a box with big flat sides. High winds can rip a door off a parked van if you open it facing the gust, and that is a classic and expensive mistake. Always park nose into the wind, hold the door with both hands, and check the safe-travel forecast every day.

Cars are easier in bad weather, and a hotel is warm, dry and dull in the best way. If you are travelling with small children, or if someone dislikes small spaces, that comfort counts for a lot.

Summer: long days, mild weather, and vans at their best. Nights may still be cold.

Shoulder (May and September): cheaper vans, fewer people, but many campsites closed and more wind.

Winter: short days and possible road closures. Choose heated vehicles and winter tyres, and prepare for the northern lights’ reward, not for comfort.

Which roads can you drive?

CampervanPlanet’s Iceland page notes that a 2WD camper is fine on the paved Ring Road and most popular routes. The Westfjords have gravel roads where a 4×4 is recommended, and the F-roads into the Highlands need a high-clearance 4×4 and are open only from late June to early September, with dates that change each year. If you want to go there, our Iceland 4×4 camper page is the right place to look.

The Ring Road itself is 1,322 km of Route 1, which you can drive in about seven days at a sensible pace, or in 10–14 days without rushing. Pick-up is at Keflavík Airport, where international flights land, about 45 minutes from Reykjavík, or in the capital.

Who should choose which

After comparing everything, here is how we would decide:

Campervan in summer: couples, families and groups of three or four who want to stretch a budget and explore on their own schedule. The savings grow with the group size.

Car and hotels in summer: travellers who value comfort and do not want to cook, or who have a short trip and a flexible budget.

Campervan in winter: only with a van built for the cold, and only if you are happy with short days.

Car and hotels in winter: the more relaxed option for most people, especially on a first visit.

We have the same discussion for the neighbouring country in our guide to Norway campervan vs car and hotels, where the maths is a little different because wild camping is allowed.
