What exists is a set of Finnish customs that couples can choose to weave in: the bridal crown (morsiuskruunu), the wedding waltz, heartfelt toasts (puheenvuoro), sharing bread, a wedding sauna, and coffee with pulla. Much of what is sold as a Lapland tradition is styling: candles, ice lanterns, reindeer and furs. That is lovely, but it is not heritage. Sámi customs belong to Sámi people, so ask before you borrow anything. Our Lapland Wedding Traditions page lists the options, and through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, we help you plan a wedding that uses them honestly. We sell weddings, and weddings in Lapland are easy to describe in romantic words. A candle is not a tradition because it is in a snowy forest. A reindeer is not a custom because it is at your ceremony.

So we use three labels in this guide. Finnish customs are practices described as part of Finnish weddings, and we state them conservatively. Styling is what we design: seasonal, beautiful and ours. Sámi culture is a living culture of the people of this region, and we make no claims about it beyond respectful, generic guidance. If a page tells you that couples “have always” done something in Lapland, ask who says so.

This distinction helps you, too. A wedding with real elements feels more personal than one that borrows a story. And you can check what we say on our own Lapland Wedding Traditions page.

Finnish Customs You Can Genuinely Use

These are the customs our page lists as part of Finnish weddings. We describe them in general terms; families vary a great deal, and none of them is required.

<img loading="lazy" src="https://hungrytravelfamily.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/rw-wedding-arch-rovaniemi-lapland-571.jpg" alt="A wedding arch from our own collection, styled in Rovaniemi. Handmade crowns can be made by artisans; we work with artisans who do so.

The wedding waltz. Our page lists the wedding waltz among Finnish customs, as a way to open the dancing.

Puheenvuoro. The word means roughly “a turn to speak”: heartfelt toasts from family and friends during the meal. It needs no props, only a microphone and a glass.

Bread. Rye bread or karjalanpiirakka, the Karelian pie, shared or broken together, symbolises abundance.

The wedding sauna. Traditionally the bride’s ritual on the eve of the wedding, with birch branches (vihta), and then a lake plunge or a roll in the snow. We say more below.

Coffee with pulla. A coffee ceremony with sweet cardamom bread (pulla) is a gentle way to end a day.

The meaning attached to each custom is how it is usually described, not a rule. We would choose two or three that mean something to you rather than all of them.

The Wedding Sauna, in Detail

Of all of the customs, the sauna is the one travellers ask about most, and it is easy to do honestly. In the traditional form, the bride goes to the sauna on the eve of the wedding with close female relatives and friends, using birch whisks, and the evening is about quiet and being together. In winter the cool-off might be a roll in the snow or a dip in an ice hole (avantouinti). We would never force a plunge; our own sauna wedding page says the sauna is optional for guests and that swimwear or towels are fine.

For a couple on a trip, the practical points are:

Smoke saunas and lake access are possible at wilderness lodges along the Ounasjoki, mostly for small gatherings of up to about 20.

Boutique hotels with sauna suites suit larger groups.

You do not need to follow the old gender pattern. Many couples simply invite everyone they love.

Ask the venue about safety and temperature when you book the cool-off. See our Sauna Wedding in Lapland page for the options.

What Is Styling, Not Tradition

Here is where we say plainly what we design. For a traveller that is both interesting and a place to take care. Our guidance is generic, and we think it is the right level:

Ask before you wear or use anything. A gákti is not a costume. Our page lists salmon, whitefish, reindeer, wild berries, cloudberries, lingonberries and blueberries, warm berry glögi and coffee with pulla. None of it is staged; it is what is eaten here. A warm berry glögi at a winter ceremony is a practical choice as well as a nice one.

Season decides which customs fit. In the dark season, from November to March, candles are the obvious choice. At midsummer, the midnight sun gives light well past midnight and a lakeshore bonfire fits the mood. In September and October the colours come back, and the aurora with them. If you are visiting from abroad, the trip around the wedding matters as much as the ritual; our guide to a cabin wedding in Lapland explains kotas, glass cabins and log lodges, which are good places to hold a sauna evening and a coffee table together.

Plan 8 to 12 months ahead for winter, and for the paperwork start at least three to four months before the date. A civil ceremony can be held in English, so the legal wedding and the custom you choose are separate decisions.

How to Plan It With Us, Step by Step

We plan as one team, from the first idea to the final set-up, and you can book everything or just the part you need.

Tell us about your day. Date, guests, and any customs you would like. None is required, and families vary, so choose the ones that mean something to you.
</details><details>
Is a candle-lit ceremony a Lapland tradition?

Candles and ice lanterns are part of how we style winter weddings in the dark season, the kaamos. We treat them as styling rather than as an old ritual, and we would encourage you to read any website that calls them tradition with the same caution.
</details><details>
Can we use Sámi elements at our wedding?

Ask first, and ask Sámi people, not a wedding planner. A gákti is not a costume, and a joik is a personal tradition. We make no claims about Sámi culture beyond that. If we source Sámi-inspired accessories, we label them as inspired.
</details><details>
Do we have to do the wedding sauna?

No. It is a custom, not a requirement, and it is optional for guests, who can use swimwear or towels. Smoke saunas with lake access are possible at wilderness lodges, mostly for small groups.
</details><details>
Can we marry legally in Finland as foreigners and still use these customs?

Yes. Finland has no residency requirement. You apply for an examination of impediments, which takes about seven working days and costs around €60, and bring passports and a certificate of no impediment. A civil ceremony can be held in English, and the customs are your own choice.
</details><details>
How much does it cost to add traditional elements?

There is no fixed price list for customs because they are part of a custom quote. The published cost guide runs from around €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €30,000 or more for a larger celebration, and a quote with no hidden fees follows a consultation.
</details>

Our Honest Final Word

We would rather give you a true story than a pretty one. wedding traditions?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "The ones listed on our Lapland Wedding Traditions page are the bridal crown (morsiuskruunu), the wedding waltz, heartfelt toasts (puheenvuoro), sharing rye bread or karjalanpiirakka, a wedding sauna and a coffee ceremony with pulla. None is required, and families vary, so choose the ones that mean something to you."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "Is a candle-lit ceremony a Lapland tradition?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Candles and ice lanterns are part of how we style winter weddings in the dark season, the kaamos. We treat them as styling rather than as an old ritual, and we would encourage you to read any website that calls them tradition with the same caution."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "Can we use Sámi elements at our wedding?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Ask first, and ask Sámi people, not a wedding planner. A gákti is not a costume, and a joik is a personal tradition. We make no claims about Sámi culture beyond that. If we source Sámi-inspired accessories, we label them as inspired."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "Do we have to do the wedding sauna?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "No. It is a custom, not a requirement, and it is optional for guests, who can use swimwear or towels. Smoke saunas with lake access are possible at wilderness lodges, mostly for small groups."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "Can we marry legally in Finland as foreigners and still use these customs?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes. Finland has no residency requirement. You apply for an examination of impediments, which takes about seven working days and costs around €60, and bring passports and a certificate of no impediment. A civil ceremony can be held in English, and the customs are your own choice."}}, {"@type": "Question", "name": "How much does it cost to add traditional elements?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "There is no fixed price list for customs because they are part of a custom quote. The published cost guide runs from around €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €30,000 or more for a larger celebration, and a quote with no hidden fees follows a consultation."}}]}

Lapland wedding traditions: Finnish customs you can use, what is styling not heritage, and how to approach Sámi culture respectfully.
