We have not hired a campervan for a Danish tour, though, so the routes and rules below come from the CampervanPlanet Denmark page, which maps four itineraries, and from stable local knowledge. The only real toll is the Great Belt Bridge, roughly DKK 250 (about €34) one way for a car or small camper. Wild camping is banned, so book a licensed campsite or autocamper aire. Denmark makes all three easy. The page rates every route as easy and suitable for a 2WD vehicle, the fuel stops come every 20 to 50 km, and campsites are plentiful. There is also no motorway vignette, which keeps the cost simple.

The weather is the main wild card. The page notes that the warm months, from June to August, bring daylight until almost midnight and the best odds of good weather, but it stays windy and showery, and this is the most expensive and crowded time. May and September are the sweet spot, with mild weather, open campsites and lower rates. October and April are quieter still, though plenty of aires and sites close at either end of the season, so phone ahead.

If you want to compare Denmark with its neighbours first, our guide to campervan prices across 22 countries is a good place to start.

Letters from Rovaniemi

Honest travel from the Arctic Circle

We send one letter a month — no roundups, no sponsored fluff. Spend a day or two in Copenhagen for Nyhavn, Tivoli and the Little Mermaid, then drive up the coast to the Louisiana art museum at Humlebæk, the Hamlet castle of Kronborg in Helsingør and Frederiksborg at Hillerød. Finish at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde.

Because you never leave Zealand, there are no bridge tolls. The driving is flat and easy. The page lists more than 15 campsites along the route, and a 2-berth campervan is plenty.

One legal point is worth knowing and is easy to forget: dipped headlights are required at all times in Denmark, day or night. Most modern vehicles switch them on automatically, but check how yours works. And remember that wild camping is banned, so book a licensed campsite or an autocamperplads for the night. There is no shortage of them, as the page points out. We have written about the north coast in our posts on Malmö and the Öresund region, which sits just across the water from Helsingør.

Route 2: Funen and LEGOLAND, Copenhagen to Aarhus

The classic crossing from Zealand to mainland Jutland takes four to six days and about 320 km, and it is the route to choose with children. You cross the Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsbroen) to Funen for Odense, the home town of H.C. Andersen, and the moated Egeskov Castle. Then you keep going over the free Little Belt bridge to LEGOLAND in Billund and finish in Aarhus.

The Great Belt is the main cost. The page budgets roughly DKK 250, about €34, one way for a car or small camper, with more for a larger motorhome. You pay by plate or card at the toll. It is worth checking the current price before you travel.

This route works best with a 4-berth motorhome for a family, and the page lists more than 20 campsites along the way. The best months are May and September, when the crowds at LEGOLAND are manageable and the weather is mild. If you pick up in Copenhagen and finish in Aarhus, ask about one-way fees, because they vary by company and season.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. From Billund you head out to the Wadden Sea islands of Rømø and Fanø near Esbjerg, then track north past the slowly migrating Rubjerg Knude lighthouse to Aalborg and finish at Skagen, the country’s northern tip. At Grenen, you can walk out to where the Skagerrak and Kattegat meet.

The land is flat, but the wind comes hard off the sea. The page warns that gusts can be a problem for a high-sided van, so take it easy when the wind picks up and avoid exposed causeways in a storm. Campsites are fewer than on the other routes, about 12 along the way, so book ahead in July and August.

This is a route for those who love big skies and empty beaches. If that sounds like your idea of a holiday, you will probably also like Norway’s Atlantic coast, which we cover in our guide to Trondheim and the Atlantic Road.

Photo: Hungrytravelfamily

Route 4: Møns Klint and south Zealand

The shortest route is two to three days and about 160 km, and it is the one we would add to Copenhagen as an extension. Drive south through Køge and the UNESCO-listed Stevns Klint to the white chalk cliffs of Møns Klint, which rise straight out of turquoise Baltic water with beech forest behind them. The page describes it as the most dramatic coast in the country.

The drive is easy, and a small campervan is perfect. Stege, the small town on Møn, is a good place to stop for a coffee and a walk around the old ramparts. The cliffs have a walking route along the top and a staircase down to the beach, and the best light is in the morning or late afternoon.

This is also a good winter-weekend idea for anyone based in Copenhagen who owns or rents a van, though many campsites close outside the season, so check opening dates before you set off. The route fits comfortably into a long weekend.

Where you may sleep: aires and licensed campsites

This is the most important rule in Denmark for a campervan. The page is clear: you can only stay overnight at licensed campsites or autocamperplads aires. Wild camping is banned, and you should not rely on lay-bys or beach car parks for the night, even if other people seem to be doing so. Fines are possible and enforcement varies.

An autocamperplads is a simple, often cheap place designed for campervans and motorhomes, usually with water and waste points and sometimes electricity. Standard campsites are more full-featured, with showers, kitchens and often a shop. Many are open only from around May to October, so phone ahead outside high summer.

For the practical side, a small tip: Danish campsites often ask for a camping card or sell one at reception, and some require advance booking in July and August. If you are travelling with children, look for sites with playgrounds and swimming.
