Distances are long, the best scenery is outside the big cities, and a bed that travels with you solves the problem of finding somewhere to sleep near a safari gate or a surf town. It is also in its southern summer right now, with warm weather on the Cape and the peak holiday season about to start.

This guide leans on what the CampervanPlanet South Africa page says about routes, vehicles, seasons and running costs, plus stable background knowledge such as driving on the left. We have not driven these roads in a campervan ourselves, so treat this as a well-researched planning guide, and check current advice on safety and road conditions before you go. If you are new to hiring a van abroad, our campervan rental guide explains the basics.

One thing to get out of the way: the page does not quote a single headline price, because prices are live by date. We will show you the running costs instead, and you can compare the rental price for your own dates.

Short Answer

CampervanPlanet lists four mapped South African itineraries (Garden Route, Panorama Route and Kruger, Wild Coast and Drakensberg, West Coast and Cederberg) and four vehicle types from a Budget Camper to a Family Motorhome. Running costs are modest: roughly €10 to €25 for a campsite and €20 to €35 for a day’s fuel. Our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off a booking.

In this guide

Four routes and what vehicle each one needs

Choosing among the four vehicle types

What a day on the road costs

Campsites, parks and booking ahead

When to go: summer peak, autumn value

Safety, driving and common sense

How booking works and how to save €20

Frequently asked questions

🚐 Planning this trip by campervan? Get €20 off your rental in South Africa with our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20
Compare campervans →

If you book through our links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you — it keeps this blog on the road.

Four routes and what vehicle each one needs

The CampervanPlanet page maps four routes, and it also tells you which vehicle each one wants. That is the best place to begin.

**The Garden Route (5 to 7 days, 750 km):** Cape Town to Port Elizabeth along lagoons, forests and seaside towns, with whale watching, the Bloukrans bungee bridge and Tsitsikamma. Easy, a 2WD campervan is fine, and it works all year. More than 40 campsites along the route.

**Panorama Route and Kruger Safari (7 to 10 days, 900 km):** Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window and then Kruger for the Big Five. Easy to moderate, 2WD is fine. Best in May and October.

**Wild Coast and Drakensberg (8 to 12 days, 1,100 km):** Drakensberg peaks, Howick Falls, Coffee Bay and Port St Johns. Moderate, with some gravel, and a 4×4 is recommended. Best in September and April.

**West Coast and Cederberg (4 to 6 days, 550 km):** the wildflower route from August to October, then rock art and stargazing in the Cederberg. Easy, 2WD is fine.

For a first trip, the Garden Route is the obvious choice, and the West Coast is a lovely add-on if you are there in spring.

Letters from Rovaniemi

Honest travel from the Arctic Circle

We send one letter a month — no roundups, no sponsored fluff. Just what we’re doing, where we’re going, and what we actually think.

Subscribe

Choosing among the four vehicle types

The page lists four vehicle types: a Budget Camper, a Comfort Camper, a 4×4 Adventure Camper and a Family Motorhome. The Budget Camper is a two-berth, manual, petrol vehicle, compact and fuel-efficient. The Comfort Camper sleeps two or three and adds a heater and a kitchen. The 4×4 Adventure Camper sleeps two to four and is built for gravel roads and mountain passes. The Family Motorhome sleeps four to six and has a full kitchen and bathroom.

Our advice is the same as anywhere. Couples on the Garden Route do well with a Comfort Camper. A family should take the motorhome, or a larger camper if the children are small. And the Wild Coast and Drakensberg route is the one place where the 4×4 is worth paying for.

If you cannot drive a manual, check the transmission before you book, because the entry-level vehicle is described as manual. Automatics exist but cost more, and fewer are available in busy months. Remember too that South Africans drive on the left, which takes a day to get used to if you come from the right.

What a day on the road costs

The page gives a handy breakdown in rand with euro equivalents, and we have rounded it. Fuel is roughly R400 to R700 a day, or about €20 to €35, depending on distance and vehicle size. A campsite costs R200 to R500 a night, or about €10 to €25, for most sites. Groceries come to R300 to R500 a day, about €15 to €25. A restaurant meal with wine is R150 to R350 per person, about €8 to €18. Activities range from R200 to R2,000 per person, about €10 to €100, from self-drive safari (park entry only) to shark cage diving or bungee.

Fuel is priced at roughly R22 to R25 a litre, and toll plazas typically charge R20 to R80, with R200 to R400 a sensible budget for a major long-distance journey. These are the page’s figures, so check current prices before you rely on them.

Add the rental itself and you can see why South Africa is attractive. A couple can run a decent road trip on a day budget well below what the same trip would cost in Europe or the Nordics. Compare that with our 22-country campervan price comparison.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. The page puts campsite fees at R150 to R500 a night, roughly €8 to €25, with municipal and private sites at the cheaper end. National parks run by SANParks charge R300 to R600 a night plus conservation fees. Private reserves can cost R500 to R1,500 a night but offer unique wildlife experiences, sometimes unfenced, which is something to know before you pitch.

Book popular parks well ahead, especially in school holidays and the December to February peak. Kruger’s rest camps fill early, and the Garden Route’s coastal campsites are busy around Christmas and Easter. If you arrive without a booking, call ahead rather than driving in hope.

Camping outside designated sites is regulated, and fines can be heavy, so always check the rules for the place you are in. A good rule: if you are not sure it is permitted, assume it is not.

Photo: South African Tourism from South Africa, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

When to go: summer peak, autumn value

The seasons are the opposite of Europe’s. December to February is the summer peak, with temperatures of 25 to 35°C, perfect beach weather and the highest prices, so book early. March to May is autumn, the shoulder season, and the page calls it the best-value time: mild weather, autumn colours in the Winelands and fewer crowds, with the Kruger safari season starting.

June to August is winter, and the dry season in the north makes it the best time for Kruger, with excellent visibility and animals gathering at water. Whale watching peaks at Hermanus. Nights are cold, so a heater matters. September to November is spring, with the West Coast wildflowers from August to September, whale watching still going and perfect hiking weather.

If you can choose, we would pick March to May or September to October for balance. If you must go in December, book the vehicle and the Garden Route campsites now.

Safety, driving and common sense

We want to be careful here, because we are not locals and conditions change. The widely given advice is to avoid driving at night outside towns, keep valuables out of sight, lock the vehicle even for short stops, and use campsites and rest camps rather than roadside spots. Ask your rental company and your campsite about local conditions, and check official travel advice for your country before you leave.

On the road, expect minibus taxis, livestock, potholes on secondary roads and long distances between fuel stops. The page lists fuel stops every 40 to 60 km on the Garden Route and every 50 to 80 km on the Panorama and Kruger route, so fill up when you can. Roads like the R44 between Cape Town and Hermanus are among the most scenic drives anywhere.

If a route is marked as moderate or 4×4, respect that. A gravel road in the rain can turn into a mud trap, and your insurance may not cover you outside the permitted roads.

How booking works and how to save €20

The page explains how booking works on CampervanPlanet: you book there, but you rent from the company named in each offer, and its terms apply.
