Both look perfect on a map and both are, in the language of local councils, not suitable for hire campers. It is better to know that before you book than to hear it from a ranger, and it changes how you should plan the trip.<\/p>\n<p>This is a researched guide based on the CampervanPlanet Cairns 4WD page as we saw it in early November 2026. We have not driven in Far North Queensland ourselves, and our own off-road experience is in the Nordics, so we stay close to what the page says.<\/p>\n<p>For hiring basics, our <a href=\"https:\/\/hungrytravelfamily.com\/blog\/campervan-rental\/\">our campervan rental guide<\/a> is a good starting point.<\/p>\n<div class=\"htf-tldr\"><div class=\"htf-tldr-label\">Short Answer<\/div><p>A 4WD camper from Cairns is excellent for <strong>Cape Tribulation via the Daintree ferry<\/strong>, the <strong>sealed road to Cooktown<\/strong> (331 km) and the <strong>Atherton Tablelands<\/strong>. It is not allowed on the <strong>Bloomfield Track<\/strong> or <strong>CREB Track<\/strong>, and <strong>Cape York<\/strong> is a separate expedition with its own restrictions.
