class="htf-wrap">

If you are searching for Broome 4WD camper hire, you are probably looking at a map of the Kimberley and wondering how much of it a normal campervan can actually reach. The short version: Broome itself, Cable Beach and most of the Dampier Peninsula are easy, but the headline adventures, the Gibb River Road and the Bungle Bungles, are 4WD territory. We are Joona & Alla, and while this is not a corner of Australia we have driven ourselves, we have read the rental conditions and road-authority advice closely so you do not have to start from zero.

Broome sits on the north-west coast of Western Australia, and a 4WD camper turns it into the launch pad for some of the most remote driving in the country. CampervanPlanet’s Broome 4WD page shows three vehicles at the moment, from about €133 a day, and the dry season is short enough that booking early matters. Here is how we would plan it.

Short Answer

You only truly need a 4WD for the Gibb River Road (about 660 km unsealed), the Bungle Bungles track and the soft-sand final approach to Cape Leveque. Three 4WD campers show for Broome from about €133, €197 and €239 a day. The dry season (roughly May to October) is the only sensible window, and every rental company restricts where you may take the vehicle, so declare your route at pick-up.

In this guide

Do you actually need a 4WD from Broome?

The three 4WD campers you can compare from Broome

The best time for a Kimberley 4WD trip

Three Kimberley runs from Broome

The honest warning: where the rental company lets you drive

What a Kimberley trip costs and how to save

A simple route plan for ten days

Our verdict on Broome 4WD camper hire

🚐 Planning this trip by campervan? Get €20 off your rental in Broome and the Kimberley with our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20
Compare campervans →

If you book through our links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you — it keeps this blog on the road.

Do you actually need a 4WD from Broome?

Start with the myth-buster, because it can save you money. According to the CampervanPlanet Broome page, the Cape Leveque road has been fully sealed since 2021, so the run up the Dampier Peninsula no longer needs a 4WD. You only need one for the last sandy kilometres to the cape itself and for the unsealed side tracks to beaches and communities. If your plan is Broome, Cable Beach, Cape Leveque and the sealed highway east to Derby, a standard campervan may be enough, and our guide to 4WD camper hire in Darwin shows how the same logic applies at the other end of the Gibb.

The 4WD genuinely earns its price on three things: the Gibb River Road, the Spring Creek Track into Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles), and the soft sand near the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. The Gibb is roughly 660 km of unsealed road between Derby, about 220 km up the highway from Broome, and Kununurra, with gorges, river crossings and corrugations. The Bungle Bungles track is 53 km of 4WD-only driving that takes one and a half to three hours, with creek crossings and no fuel inside the park.

The three 4WD campers you can compare from Broome

The Broome landing page lists three 4WD campers, all shown as bookable for Broome pick-up in the dry season. Prices are the “from about” figures the page showed when we checked in early November 2026, so run a search for your dates to see live rates.

The value pick for two: a 4X4 adventure camper for two travellers, automatic, 250 km a day included, from about €133 a day. One-way hire is available.

The family 4WD: a 4×4 that sleeps five, automatic, 250 km a day, from about €197 a day. It is the only one of the three with five berths.

The newest and the longest range: an Apollo 4WD adventure camper for two, automatic, 2022 to 2026 fleet, with unlimited kilometres from about €239 a day.

The 250 km a day limit sounds generous until you remember the distances. Broome to Derby alone is about 220 km, so on a long Kimberley loop the unlimited-kilometre option can close part of the price gap. Add up your planned distance before you pick the cheapest one.

The best time for a Kimberley 4WD trip

The Kimberley runs on the dry season, and the Gibb River Road has no fixed opening date. It reopens after the wet only when Main Roads Western Australia declares it safe, so check their live travel map before every leg. As a rough calendar from the landing page: May and June are when tracks have freshly reopened and the gorges are fullest, with a small risk that you arrive before everything is open. June to August is the sweet spot, with warm days and cool nights, and also the peak for a very small 4WD fleet, so book months ahead. September and October are still open but seriously hot, with early starts needed and the build-up beginning in late October.

From December to April it is cyclone season, and the unsealed Kimberley roads close, the Gibb among them. That is not 4WD territory at all, so plan your Western Australia trip around it. If you are reading this in November looking at the 2027 dry season, you have time, but not unlimited time, and our note on low season versus peak price gaps explains why the earliest bookings usually win.

Photo: W. The big one is the Gibb River Road end to end: about 660 km unsealed, five to seven days, Broome to Derby on the sealed highway and then the full Gibb to Kununurra, passing Windjana Gorge and Bell Gorge with El Questro at the far end. A one-way rental that finishes in Darwin pairs naturally with it, which saves you the 3,000 km round trip back to Broome.

The second is the Purnululu run, usually combined with the eastern end of the Gibb, because the Spring Creek Track is the only way into the Bungle Bungles. The third is the gentle one: Broome and the Dampier Peninsula, mostly sealed, with Cape Leveque and the sand tracks as an optional extra. If you want to sleep up top instead of in a camper body, compare 4×4 rooftop tent hire in Broome, and read our wider look at rooftop-tent 4×4 hire across Australia.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. The Broome page names Britz as an example: it requires written permission for the Gibb River Road and the Bungle Bungles, which is handed over at pick-up once you declare your route. Break the rules on an off-road trail and the damage bill is yours, and unsealed-road damage is often excluded from standard cover. Read the terms for tyres, windscreens and underbody before you pay, and ask what happens if a river crossing is too deep.

Cable Beach comes with an asterisk too. Vehicles are allowed on the beach north of the rocks between the tides at 15 km/h, but many rental agreements bar beach driving outright, and Broome’s huge tides strand cars every season. Our advice is simple: if the contract says no, it is no.

What a Kimberley trip costs and how to save

Do the arithmetic on the vehicle first. A two-person 4WD at about €133 a day for ten days is roughly €1,330 before extras, and the family 4WD at about €197 comes to nearly €2,000. Fuel is the other big number: remote Kimberley stations charge far more per litre than Broome, and distances between pumps are long, so carry the range you need rather than hoping.

The saving levers are the same everywhere. Book early for June to August, compare several brands for the same dates, and check whether one-way hire to Darwin costs less than returning to Broome. Prices differ a lot between rental brands, which is why we search all of them on CampervanPlanet, and our reader code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout. Days one and two: Broome, Cable Beach at sunset and the town’s pearling history. Days three to five: drive the sealed highway to Derby, check the Gibb’s condition with Main Roads, and enter at the Derby end. Days five to nine: Windjana Gorge, Bell Gorge and the stations along the way, finishing at Kununurra or El Questro. Day ten: fly or drop the vehicle one-way. Leave a spare day, because tracks and water levels can force a change.

Tell the rental company your route at pick-up, carry plenty of water and spare food, tell someone your plan, and remember that phone coverage is patchy on the Gibb. A satellite messenger is cheap insurance.

Our verdict on Broome 4WD camper hire

For a standard Broome and Cape Leveque holiday, a normal campervan is enough and cheaper. For the Gibb River Road or the Bungle Bungles, a 4WD is not optional, and the small fleet means booking early for June to August. Use the 4WD page to compare the three vehicles for your dates, check the restrictions before you pay, and take the €20 coupon at checkout.

We would be most careful about timing and about reading the contract.
