The landing page describes it as an easy loop north of Toronto through Barrie, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville, with lakes, waterfront towns and more than 15 campsites along the route. It is a 2WD-friendly drive, and the best months are listed as June and October.

Gravenhurst is known as the birthplace of steamboat cruises, Bracebridge is a pleasant place to stop for a walk by the falls, and Huntsville is a gateway for hiking. In October the trees around the lakes turn red, orange and gold, which is the main reason this loop is so popular.

Because it is close to the city, this is a good first route for a short rental, or the first two days of a longer trip. If you have never driven an RV before, the gentle roads and lack of steep mountain passes are a bonus.

Route two: Niagara Falls and wine country

South of Toronto, the scenic QEW highway leads to Niagara Falls and the Niagara-on-the-Lake wine region, which the page says has more than 40 wineries. The best months are listed as May and October.

The Falls themselves are crowded in summer, so a campervan base outside the busiest tourist areas is handy. Remember that RV parking at attractions can be limited, and large vehicles do not always fit in city car parks, so check ahead and consider leaving the RV at the campsite for the day. Wine tasting and driving do not mix, so plan a taxi or tour for any tasting days.

Niagara works well as a day trip from Toronto, or as a night or two on a longer loop that returns via Muskoka. It is also a good example of why a smaller camper can be better than a big motorhome in busy areas.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. The page highlights it for camping, especially in summer and fall, and notes that mobile coverage can be patchy in Algonquin and northern Muskoka. Download offline maps before you go, carry a paper map as a backup, and tell someone your plan.

Summer evenings in Muskoka and Algonquin can drop to around 10°C even when the days are warm, so bring layers. Mosquitoes and blackflies can be an issue in late spring and early summer, so pack repellent. The key decision is size. A compact camper van is easier to park in towns and cheaper to run. A larger motorhome offers more space for families and a bathroom on board, but uses more fuel and may be restricted at some campsites.

If you are unsure about the differences, our guide to campervan vs motorhome vs RV explains the vehicle types, and our Canada RV rental overview shows how Toronto compares with pick-ups in Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal.

Mileage, insurance and other costs to check

As in the USA, RV rentals in Canada often charge separately for extra mileage, generator hours and kitchen kits. The important thing is to compare total costs, not just the daily rate. Ask about the mileage allowance, the deposit, the insurance excess and any one-way fees if you plan to return the vehicle somewhere else.

Winter tyres are strongly recommended in Ontario in cold months, but most visitors will be travelling in the warmer season. If you do consider a winter trip, check availability early, because the page notes that most RV rentals and campgrounds close.

Before you pay, read our explainer on campervan insurance, deposits and excess, and remember that code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 is a fixed €20 off at checkout.
