The first is the cold: an outdoor proposal in Rovaniemi between December and March can mean temperatures well below zero, and the best photographs happen when you are neither shivering nor wrapped like a parcel. The second is the secret. Your partner has to dress warmly enough for a winter evening without knowing why, and ideally in something they will be happy to see themselves in later.<\/p><p>Full disclosure: Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, run by Joona and Alla. Alla founded it after planning her own wedding in 2024, and we have spent a lot of winter evenings holding bouquets and checking that everyone is warm. What follows is what we tell friends, not a brochure.<\/p><p>The good news is that the two problems solve each other. The right winter layers are almost invisible in photographs, if you choose the outer layer sensibly.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Layering_for_the_Person_Who_Is_Proposing\"><\/span>Layering for the Person Who Is Proposing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You will be standing still more than you expect: waiting, then kneeling or standing close, then posing for couple photos. Standing still is where cold gets in. Not cotton, which holds damp and chills.<\/li><li><strong>Middle:<\/strong> fleece or wool, or a light down layer. This is where the warmth comes from.<\/li><li><strong>Outer:<\/strong> a windproof, insulated jacket and trousers that fit over the rest. A dark, plain outer layer is easiest to photograph.<\/li><\/ul><p>Add insulated winter boots with a thick sole, a hat that covers your ears, a neck gaiter or scarf, and thin liner gloves with warm mittens over them. Liners matter on the day, as you will see in section five.<\/p><p>If you do not own these things, do not buy them for one evening. Many resorts offer winter clothing rental. Nobody finds that suspicious in Lapland, where outdoor activities are what most people come for.<\/p><p>Then add one small, natural request, spoken casually a day or two before:<\/p><ul><li>&quot;Bring one nice outfit for dinner, in case the restaurant is smart.&quot;<\/li><li>&quot;Wear that sweater you love, under your jacket. It will look good in photos.&quot;<\/li><li>&quot;I booked a photographer for a few holiday pictures, so wear something you like.&quot;<\/li><\/ul><p>The last one is partly true if you choose an option with a photographer, and it explains why you suddenly care what they are wearing. Do not ask for a dress and heels. Do not ask for a suit. A partner who is asked to dress up for an outdoor evening will start asking questions.<\/p><p>If your partner usually gets cold, give them the better winter gear yourself, and say it is for the activity. A warm partner is a relaxed partner, and a relaxed partner has a better face when they say yes.<\/p><p>We communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and never contact your partner. Check the pocket zips. A ring dropped into deep snow is a story you do not want.<\/li><li><strong>Gloves.<\/strong> Thin liner gloves allow you to open a small box and hold a ring. Mittens go on top and come off at the last moment. Rehearse once at the hotel so your fingers know the order.<\/li><li><strong>Hands for photos.<\/strong> The ring photograph is one of the best, and cold fingers swell. Warm your hands before you come out.<\/li><li><strong>Phones and batteries.<\/strong> Cold drains phone batteries much faster. Keep your phone in an inner pocket, switched to low power, and do not rely on it for the moment. The photographer has their own equipment, which is one reason we always recommend one.<\/li><li><strong>Sunglasses and bright snow.<\/strong> On a sunny day the snow reflects strongly. Keep your glasses to hand until the moment, then remove them.<\/li><\/ul><p>None of this is complicated, but it takes ten minutes of planning on the day before. Heavy insulated winter boots are the single most useful thing you can wear or rent. They should have room for a thick wool sock and a second pair of toes, as tight boots are colder. If your partner is wearing a skirt or dress, the answer is the same: thermal layers and boots underneath, and the outer layer on top until the last minute.
