We live in Rovaniemi and drive in the dark at minus twenty most winters.<\/p><p>But we also know how many things have to go right for a self-drive aurora night to work: a clear sky, a safe place to stop, a road you can read in the dark, a vehicle that handles ice, a driver who is awake and sober, and the knowledge to decide where to go. A guided chase buys all of those at once. A rental car buys one of them, the vehicle, and leaves you to supply the rest.<\/p><p>The question we ask friends is simple: do you want to be the driver, the navigator and the forecaster, or do you want to be the guest? There is no wrong answer, but only one is relaxing. If you get it wrong you will spend three hours in a car park looking at grey. A guide does this every night and has a feel for local weather that a visitor cannot match in a week.<\/p><p>A second layer of difficulty is local knowledge about where it is safe to stop. Pull-offs on narrow winter roads are limited, snow banks hide edges, and stopping in the wrong place is dangerous for you and for passing traffic. Guides know the established stops, the places with room for a vehicle to turn and the spots where the view opens up. It is hard to learn that from a map.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s3\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Driving_in_the_Dark_on_Winter_Roads\"><\/span>Driving in the Dark on Winter Roads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Winter roads in northern Norway can be icy, snowy and poorly lit, and conditions can change within a few kilometres. If you do not drive on winter roads regularly, a night-time mountain drive with an unfamiliar car and an unfamiliar road is a lot of stress for what should be a holiday highlight.<\/p><p>The driver also misses the show. On a guided tour someone else watches the road and you watch the sky. In a rental car the person at the wheel is the person who sees the least, or has to stop repeatedly. For couples, that means one of you is on duty the entire night.<\/p><p>Check the rules for your own situation, including licence requirements, tyres and insurance, with the rental company and the Norwegian authorities. In a rental car you carry your own layers, your own flask and your own plan if you get stuck or the car will not start. Mobile coverage can be patchy in remote spots.<\/p><p>None of this is a reason to stay in town. It is a reason to be honest about the gear and experience you are bringing. A guided small group of two to eight guests is a comfortable middle path between a coach and total independence.<\/p><p>Think, too, about the human side. A night under the sky is more enjoyable when you share it with a guide who tells stories, answers questions and helps you with a phone camera.
