For the money side in more detail, see our breakdown of what campervan rental in Norway really costs.

Short Answer

Pick up a campervan at Bergen Airport, drive via Hardanger and the Sognefjord, cross the mountains to Geiranger, then finish with Trollstigen and the Atlantic Road, roughly 900 to 1,100 km over ten days. It is around 900 to 1,100 km depending on your detours, which sounds short until you remember that Norwegian roads wind, climb and queue for ferries. We plan on 150 to 200 km on a long day and about half that on most others.

Ten days gives you time for the things that make this route worth doing: a hike or two, a boat on a fjord, a long lunch, and the unplanned afternoon at a campsite because the weather turned. If you only have a week, drop the Hardanger section and begin at the Sognefjord.

The one-way question is worth raising early. Bergen is a listed pick-up point, as are Oslo, Trondheim and Tromsø, and one-way rentals exist on some routes with a fee. If you want to fly out of the north, check which drop-off the offer allows rather than assuming. If you would rather loop back to Bergen, add a day.

Days 1 to 3: Bergen and the Hardanger side

Collect the van at the airport, stock up at a supermarket on the way out (you will thank yourself for it at the first Norwegian restaurant bill), and start with Bergen’s old wharf and the funicular before you leave town. We would sleep the first night at a campsite near Bergen, rather than try to drive far after a flight.

From there head east towards the Hardanger fjord, famous for fruit orchards that blossom in late spring, and the Eidfjord area with its giant waterfall, the Vøringsfossen. The roads are good, there are several tunnels, and there are ferries rather than bridges in some places. The Hardangervidda plateau and the long walk to the Trolltunga rock are big day hikes, ten hours or more, so only attempt them with proper preparation and in suitable conditions. A shorter walk to a waterfall is a gentler alternative and easier with a van.

What we like about starting here is that the roads ease you in. By day three you have your van-driving rhythm, you know how much of the wardrobe you actually need, and you have learned which side of the van the kettle lives on.

Days 4 to 5: Aurland, Flåm and the Sognefjord

The Sognefjord is Norway’s longest fjord, and the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord arms are the dramatic ones. Flåm is busy in summer, with cruise ships and the famous railway, but the fjord views from the water are worth the crowds, and a quiet campsite a few kilometres away can make it feel like a different place.

You will drive through the Lærdal tunnel, which at about 24.5 km is the longest road tunnel in the world. It is remarkably well designed, with blue-lit caverns to break the monotony, but it is still a long time to be inside, so take a break at the other end. We also recommend getting out of the van for a fjord boat or a kayak. Seeing the fjord from the water rather than from a layby changes your sense of the scale of the place.

This is the point on the route where we usually have the most rain. If a day turns grey, do not fight it: book a campsite with a drying area, cook something warm, and let the clouds lift when they want to.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. It is typically open only in the warmer months, so check the opening dates on the Norwegian road authority site before you commit your dates. The reward is wild, bare scenery that looks nothing like the green fjord below, with snow patches lingering into summer.

Spend a night around Lom, a small village with a stave church and a bakery that people detour for. Then continue to Geirangerfjord, one of the best known fjords in the country. The road down to it has hairpins and the view from the top is the one on a thousand postcards. Plan for slow driving, and use passing places generously, particularly if you meet a coach.

Geiranger is busy, so we would book a campsite in advance for this night in July. In May or June it is much easier to find a spot. A boat trip on the fjord is worth it if the weather is clear, and you can see the Seven Sisters waterfall from the water.

Days 8 to 10: Trollstigen, the coast and the Atlantic Road

Trollstigen, the Troll’s Path, is the best known mountain road in Norway, with eleven hairpin bends and a viewing platform at the top. It is closed in winter and typically opens in late spring, depending on the snow, so again check dates. Check the length limits for your van, though standard campervans are generally fine, and take it slowly. The views from the platform make the drive worth it, and the road is also much calmer early in the morning.

From here you can drop towards the coast. Ålesund, rebuilt in an Art Nouveau style after a fire, is a lovely place to spend an evening, and the Atlantic Road further north, a string of low bridges across small islands, is the classic way to finish the trip. Choose a calm day to cross it, because in a storm the waves come over the road, and that is not the moment to be in a van.

If you want to extend the idea north, our thoughts on the Lofoten islands are in the same spirit: slow roads, big skies and good campsites. And if this route has made you curious about doing a longer trip, our first-time guide to renting a campervan in Norway covers the practical side.

Ferries, camping and the practical bits

Ferries. Western Norway is made of fjords, so many routes have a car ferry rather than a bridge. Most run frequently and do not need booking, though queues build in July. As a rough guide, a crossing for a campervan can run from around NOK 300 to 800, about €25 to €70, depending on length and route. Prices are often based on vehicle length, so check the length of your van.

Tolls. Norway uses the AutoPASS system, with cameras reading the number plate and the rental company billing you afterwards, usually with a small administration fee. Individual passages run roughly NOK 15 to 60.

Camping. Norway has roughly a thousand campsites, and a pitch in summer is more like NOK 250 to 500, about €22 to €45. There is also a network of motorhome stopovers called bobilplasser, which are simpler and cheaper. Wild camping with a van is not the free-for-all it can be with a tent; plan on campsites and marked stopovers instead of parking anywhere.

Fuel and groceries. Fill up when you see a petrol station on the longer stretches, and shop at supermarkets in larger towns rather than at small village shops.

What the van costs and when to book

In the CampervanPlanet index, Norway campervans start from about €111 a day for a basic two-berth, around €197 for a comfort camper, around €289 for a 4×4 and around €335 for a family motorhome. The 7-night median was about €201 a day for mid-May 2027 and about €396 for mid-July 2027. For this ten-day route that means a trip beginning in late May or June is a noticeably cheaper proposition than one in mid-July.

Because the Norwegian fleet is small, we would book for summer 2027 during the winter, when you can still pick the van you want. Search for your dates on CampervanPlanet, compare the excess and deposit as well as the daily rate, and use code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 for €20 off at checkout.
