A photographer who is hidden nearby, knows the plan and can anticipate the moment gives you exactly that. That is why photography is part of nearly every proposal we plan at Rovaniemi Weddings, our own company, and why our proposal photography guide goes through the reasons in more detail.

Video is a different question. It is not a replacement for photographs, and it is not always better. It captures the sound and the movement, but it demands more from the setting: more light, less wind, and a position that does not give the secret away. So the honest answer to “photographer, videographer or both” depends on the place and on what you want to keep.

What a Photographer Gives You

In our proposals the photographer does a lot more than press a button.

Our Yes Under the Aurora proposal: the photographer is also your private guide for the night. Photo: Rovaniemi Weddings

The moment itself. They are in position before you arrive and capture the question, the reaction and the first embrace.

Couple photos right after. The few minutes after a yes are the best light and the best faces. Batteries lose charge in the cold, lenses fog when they move from warm to cold, and a night proposal under the aurora means long exposures and very little light. A good photographer or videographer in Lapland carries spare batteries kept warm inside their jackets, knows how to avoid condensation and has a plan for the dark. That is one reason we work with professionals who work in these conditions rather than a friend with a phone.

Our Ice Chapel proposal setting: candlelight, ice and very little room to hide a camera. Photo: Rovaniemi Weddings

For the couple, the practical points are simple. Stay in the spot we agree. Do not turn to look for the camera. And keep a hand free for the ring: the less you fumble in gloves, the better the film looks. Our guide to proposing at −20 °C has the details on ring, flowers and gloves.

Phone footage is not a plan. A common idea is to ask a friend or relative to film on a phone. It is a lovely instinct with two real problems: a stranger in the wrong place gives the secret away, and a phone in −20 °C may shut down at the key moment. If someone you trust will be with you, tell us and we will brief them on where to stand and when. As a back-up it is fine; as the plan it is risky. The same goes for selfie sticks: selfies are wonderful after the yes, but for the question you want your hands and attention free.

What to wear for the camera. Warm first, photogenic second. Solid colours photograph better than busy patterns against snow, and one bright or cream piece, such as a scarf or hat, stands out against white and dark blue. Avoid anything that makes you take a glove off for long, and keep hair and hoods in a shape that does not hide your face when you look up. Our winter packing guide helps with the practical layers.

How to Decide, and What It Costs

Three questions help:

Do you want to hear it again? If you picture yourselves watching the moment with sound in ten years, add video.

Is the setting visual enough? A wide frozen lake, a candle-lit chapel or a big floral reveal film well.

Is the budget better spent elsewhere? If you must choose, take a bigger bouquet or a longer set of photographs before video.

On cost: the ten proposals start from €650, and the photographer is already included in most. A videographer is an add-on for every option and is quoted individually, so we do not publish a single number here. For reference only, full-day wedding videography is a separate and bigger service. Tell us at the start that you want video and it goes into the single quote.

Some combinations that make sense, as a starting point rather than a rule:

You want everything and will have it once: the Surprise Proposal Photoshoot for a full set of photographs, plus a videographer for the first ten minutes at the spot.

The setting is the star: A Promise in the Ice Chapel with a videographer, because the chapel is small, lit by candles and over in a few minutes.

The sky is the star: Yes Under the Aurora with the photographer only.
