Nothing is far, the roads are flat, the sights are made for children, and you are never more than a short drive from a campsite with a playground and a hot shower.

That said, a van with children is a different animal from a van for two adults. Space disappears, naps rule the schedule, and one wet afternoon in a six-metre box can test anyone’s patience. We have road-tripped all the Nordic countries and learned most of this the slow way, so here are the notes we would hand a friend before they booked.

If you have never rented a van before, start with our first-timer guide to campervan rental in Denmark, then come back here for the family side.

Short Answer

For a family, choose a van with its own bathroom and enough proper beds, limit yourself to roughly two hours of driving a day, check that car seats or boosters are included or booked, and plan for licensed campsites because wild camping is banned. Distances are short, the main routes are easy two-wheel-drive driving, and most days you finish before anyone gets truly grumpy in the back. There is no motorway vignette to buy, and the biggest toll most visitors meet is the Great Belt Bridge.

It also has the one thing families need most: reliable places to stop. Licensed campsites are everywhere, many with playgrounds, kitchens and laundry, so you can solve bad weather with a warm room and a tumble dryer instead of a long drive. The season broadly runs May to October, and May and September are our favourite months, with milder weather and quieter sites than the June to August peak.

Choosing the right van for children

CampervanPlanet lists four vehicle types in Denmark: Budget Camper, Comfort Camper, Low-Profile Motorhome and Family Motorhome. For two adults and a toddler a Comfort Camper may be fine, since it sleeps two to three and has a kitchen. For two adults and two children, we would look at the Family Motorhome, which sleeps four to six and has a full kitchen and bathroom on board.

The bathroom is the underrated feature. At 2 a.m. a toilet ten steps away beats a campsite block in the rain. Compare it against the cost of the larger van, though, because a bigger motorhome pays more on the Great Belt Bridge and is harder to park in towns. You can compare family vans for your dates on CampervanPlanet and read what each offer includes before you commit.

One hint from experience: do not assume the largest van is automatically best. A well-laid-out four-berth is often easier than a six-berth with beds that need rebuilding every night.

Car seats, belts and the rules that matter

In Denmark everyone in the van wears a seatbelt, front and rear, and children need a child seat or booster matched to their height and weight. That sounds obvious, but it is the first thing to settle with the rental company: whether seats can be added to your booking, how they are fitted, and what the extra cost is. Offers show what is included and what is paid locally, so read that list rather than assuming.

Dipped headlights are required at all times, day or night. Most modern rentals have automatic daytime lights, but check that the dipped headlights are on before you set off, especially at dusk. And if you have never driven a long-wheelbase van, spend the first twenty minutes in a quiet car park before the family climbs in.

Finally, check the deposit. Many offers take 10 to 20% online with the rest at pick-up, and the company holds a refundable security deposit on the main driver’s card. Make sure that card has room for it on a family-holiday month.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. You cross the Great Belt Bridge to Odense, H.C. Andersen’s home town, then see the moated Egeskov Castle, head on to LEGOLAND at Billund, and finish in Aarhus.

The driving is short on every leg, which is what makes it work. The Great Belt costs roughly DKK 250 (about €34) each way for a car or small camper and more for a larger motorhome; the Little Belt bridge is free. Plan campsites for Odense and Billund before you go, because LEGOLAND weekends and school holidays fill up.

For a gentler option, the Zealand castle loop is only about 130 km and never leaves the island, so there are no bridge tolls. Our guide to the best time to rent a campervan in Denmark helps you choose between May, September and the summer peak.

Pacing, naps and the two-hour rule

Our golden rule with children is about two hours of driving a day, and ideally one big stop. Start with the van packed and the snacks in reach, drive while the youngest naps, and arrive early enough that there is time at the site for a playground and a proper dinner. Trying to see three castles a day is how holidays turn into arguments.

Keep the day’s plan flexible. Denmark’s weather is changeable and windy, so keep a wet-weather option, a museum or a swimming pool, within reach of every overnight stop. Long evenings help: in summer you have 16 to 17 hours of daylight, so bedtime and sunset do not line up and a late walk on the beach is almost a requirement.

Campsite life: no wild camping, and that is fine

You can only stay overnight at licensed campsites or autocamperplads aires in Denmark, and the rule is enforced. For families this is a feature. You get safe space for children to wander, showers, and neighbours who are doing the same thing. Book ahead in July and August and around Sankt Hans on 23 June.

A few tips from the road. Some sites still ask for the Camping Key Europe card as ID, at roughly €20 a year, so check before you arrive. Bring a long extension lead and a small mat for the doorway. And pick sites by facilities as much as by view, because a playground, a laundry and a kitchen save a family more energy than a sea view ever repays.

What to pack and what to skip

Pack for four seasons in a day: waterproofs, warm layers and sandals. Bring a few board games and a small tablet for the evening, plus a clip-on fan or blanket for the van depending on season. Skip anything bulky that you will not use; storage in a campervan is always smaller than it looks.

The one thing we would not skip is a proper comparison of prices. Rates for the same type of van vary between rental brands, and we compare them all in one place.
