Best for culture lovers, couples, foodies, and anyone chasing Instagram-worthy grandeur.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lake mode (Balaton):<\/strong> swimming, sailing, wine, cycling the 200-km shoreline path, and surprisingly good food. Best for families, cyclists, and anyone who wants to decompress after a city sprint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most visitors spend 3\u20134 days in Budapest and never make it to the Balaton. We think that\u2019s a mistake \u2014 the lake is only 1.5 hours from Budapest by train and it\u2019s one of the most relaxing places we found anywhere in Central Europe.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s2\">Budapest thermal baths: which one to pick<\/h2>\n\n<p>There are roughly 20 public thermal baths in Budapest. That\u2019s overwhelming. Here\u2019s how we chose, and what we actually thought of the two we visited.<\/p>\n<h3>The main contenders<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sz\u00e9chenyi (City Park, Pest):<\/strong> the famous outdoor pools surrounded by yellow baroque architecture. The most photographed bath in the city. Very crowded in summer \u2014 book online, arrive before 10\u00a0am. We loved it but the tourist-to-local ratio tips toward the former in July.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gell\u00e9rt (Buda side):<\/strong> stunning Art Nouveau interior, slightly less crowded, slightly more expensive. The covered central pool is architecturally magnificent. Better for a quieter, more atmospheric soak.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rudas (Buda, near the bridges):<\/strong> older, more local feel, rooftop pool with a Danube view. Not as grand but much less touristy. The Friday\u2013Saturday night sessions are adults-only and have a party atmosphere \u2014 not our style, but worth knowing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Luk\u00e1cs (Buda):<\/strong> less famous, very local. Cheaper, less Instagram, more actual Budapestians soaking after work. We\u2019d go back here just for that atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our honest verdict: go to Sz\u00e9chenyi once for the architecture and the experience, then try Rudas or Luk\u00e1cs for a quieter soak. Two baths in four days felt right.
