The old town\u2019s baroque architecture is genuinely lovely, the flower market on Cours Saleya is one of the best in France, and the hilltop Castle Park gives you the best panorama of the bay. Culture in Nice is civilised, ordered, and easy to absorb in two days.<\/p>\n<h3>Marseille for lived-in history<\/h3>\n<p>Marseille is the oldest city in France \u2014 founded by Greek traders around 600 BC \u2014 and that depth shows if you look for it. The MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) is architecturally stunning and intellectually serious. The Fort Saint-Jean, the Abbaye de Saint-Victor, and the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde (with its panoramic city view) are all within walking distance. What Marseille doesn\u2019t have is the polished presentation of Nice. Pastel old town, famous lemon festival in February, very few tourists outside peak season.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The three Corniche roads:<\/strong> Grande, Moyenne, and Basse Corniche. Renting a car for half a day and driving all three is one of the best things you can do on the Riviera.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Day trips from Marseille<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Calanques National Park (30 min by bus + hike):<\/strong> the most spectacular natural feature on the entire French Mediterranean coast. Limestone cliffs, turquoise water, hidden inlets. Book entry permits in advance in summer \u2014 numbers are now capped.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cassis (45 min by train + bus):<\/strong> a small fishing village with its own smaller calanques and excellent local white wine. Far less visited than Nice\u2019s day-trip circuit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aix-en-Provence (30 min by train):<\/strong> C\u00e9zanne\u2019s city, with better caf\u00e9 culture than either Nice or Marseille.
